in opening conference tilts
The Greys were able to mount
very little in the way, of a scoring
threat after the first inning.
In the first inning, the Exeter
rally was sparked by a triple
from the bat of Darlene Bourne
and doubles delivered by Joyce
Hume and Joyce Morgan.
Lynne Farquhar beat out a
bunt to open the Exeter seventh
but was thrown out on' an at-
tempted steal of second.
Blanshard pitcher Jane
Rolston in addition to turning in a
good pitching effort led her club
at the plate. She singled and
scored the first run, in the fourth.
In the Blanshard fifth Waren
Humphries crossed the plate and
Fran Thomson did the same in
the seventh.
Jane Rolston led off the eighth
with a bunt single and scored on a
single by Pat De Brabendere.
The first three Blanshard
batters to the plate in the ninth
reached the base paths safely and
eventually scored.
Cheryl Zvonkin led off with a
walk, Mary Barr doubled and
Jane Rolston singled to score orie
run and tie the score.
Exeter hurler Lia DeJong was
able to strike out the next two
batters but Pat De Brabendere
came through with a pop single
over the drawn,in E)pter infield
to score two more runs.
The Exeter junior Hawks have
a new coach for the upcoming
1974-75 hockey season. Actually,
it's an old one coming back.
Exeter Minor Hockey
Association president Ron Horn
said Sunday afternoon he was
pleased to announce that Terry
Bourne had agreed to handle the
coaching duties. He was the
junior coach for the 1968-69 and
1969-70 seasons.
Bourne was in charge of
Sunday's workout at Huron Park
and he said he was surprised at
the good condition most of the
players were in.
He added, "I hope to put a team
on the ice that will play good
positional hockey and have good
discipline on the ice."
Terry Bourne played junior
with the Ingersoll Marlands and
went to the Springfield Indians in
1966 at the time of the players
strike with owner Eddie Shore.
The next season he was with the
Jersey Devils under coach Vic
Stasiuk.
Next came the two years of
coaching in Exeter and the last
three seasons he was a valuable
member of the Lucan-Ilderton
Jets,

The undefeated streak of the
Exeter Greys has been broken by
Blanshard and the best-of-five
series to decide the championship
of the South Perth ladies softball
league is all tied tip at two games
apiece.
After leading the finals two
games to none, the Greys were
beaten by 131anshard 7-5 in
Exeter Thursday and 6-4 back in
Kirkton Tuesday.
The fifth and deciding game
will be played tonight, Thursday
at Exeter Community park with
game time set for 7 p.m .
The only flaw in the Greys
record up to the third game of the
final round was a tie during the
regular season with the same
Blanshard club,
Two runs in each of the sixth
and seventh innings allowed
Blanshard to break a 2-2 tie. The
Greys came back with one run in
the top of the ninth and had the
bases loaded but were unable to
score any further.
The Greys opened the scoring
in the first inning when Joyce
Hume walked and was able to
come around to score,
Marilyn Barker's single sent
Mary Barr and Deb Newton
home with two Blanshard runs in
the fourth. Lynne Farquhar
singled with one out id the Exeter
fifth and scored on a similar hit
by Lia DeJong,
In the Exeter sixth Joyce
Morgan singled, moved to second
on a walk to Valerie Sweet and
scored on a hit by Joyce Hume.
Deb Newton and Marilyn
Barker crossed the plate with
Blanshard runs in the sixth on a
hit by Irene Watt. In the seventh
Mary Barr and Cheryl Zvonkin
scored.
The final run for the Exeter
team was scored in the ninth by
Lynne Farquhar.
The game again was a pitcher's
battle between Jane Rolston of
Blanshard and Exeter's Lia
DeJong.
Blow Early Lead
In Thursday's contest, the
Greys started off as if they were
going to wrap up the cham-
pionship in straight games and
preserve their unbeaten record
for the entire season.
They scored five runs in the
first inning and appeared to be on
the way to a certain victory. The
Blanshard club kept pecking
away at the five run margin and
scored single runs in each of the
fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth

was named defensive player of
the week for the Panthers. The
lop offensive player was Paul
Brooks with a strong game in-
cluding four kicking points.

a 13 yard pass play, Both con-

Much controversy is going on currently about the out-
come of the big hockey series between Team Canada and
the Soviet Union.
The big winner regardless of the actual outcome will be
the World Hockey Association, The publicity the league is
getting plus the tremendous efforts put forth by members
of the team is sure to help all teams at the box office.
The performance of Team Canada to date has not really
been unexpected in this corner, We felt from the beginning
(and have collected a couple of wagers to date to prove it)
that our team would fare well against the Russians.
One must remember that 19 of the 25 members of
Canada '74 were stars in the NHL before changing to the
new league,
This plus the different attitude of everyone involved
this time that the Russians would probably be the favorites
and the experience of coach Billy Harris in international
competition made us brave enough to call for a Canadian
victory,
To date the performance of the three Howes will assure
,good attendance this year at any games in which the
Houston Aeros participate,
Gordie has certainly proved to be the super star at the
age of 46 and his sons have shown they can play with the
"best of them" in any calibre.
The few times the Russians have become flustered and
strayed from their usual flawless play has been caused by
the good hitting of the Canadians and all three Howes have
given their share,
While speaking of Gordie Howe he will be part of a CTV
series to be shown this Sunday night at 10 p.m.
The program is called, "The Human Journey-
Leadership" and Howe appears with General A. J. Dex-
traze, chief of the Defense Staff, Prime Minister Trudeau
and many other prominent Canadians.
The show studies the different qualities of leadership
and Howe is seen by producer Jerry Lawton as having
qualities of leadership similar to the great military leaders
of the past.
In a release which reached our desk last week, the
producer said, "I picked Howe because I consider him to be
a classic example of an older form of leadership in which
the leader is engaged with the followers directly in the task
at hand. More than anything else he must lead by ex-
ample."
Lawton went on to say, "There is a mystique, an aura
about him. If Howe weren't one of the greatest hockey
players of all time, if his education and circumstances were
different, might he also have been equally superb in•
business or the military or politics?"
The last paragraph of the release probably hit the nail
right on the head. It said, "Perhaps the Russians would be
less confident if they knew they would be up against a man
with the qualities of a superb military general."
Good racing form
The record of the • Huron Racing Stables in
thoroughbred racing this 'summer is' a very good one:
Operated jointly by Brian Smillie of Hensall and Dr. Paul
Brady of Seaforth, the area stables have won six of their
„; last seven starts this year and are looking forward to better
things in the near future.
At the moment the pride and joy of Smillie and Brady is
A Musical Formal, a four year old filly. In a September 6
race A Musical Formal came from fourth place at the top of
the stretch to win by a length and a half under urging from
jockey Sandy Hawley.
The filly was claimed by Huron Stables on July 18 and
has gained in purses about half of the $10,000 claiming price
since that time.
A Musical Formal is being readied for a big race on Oc-
tober 27 at Woodbine, She will be entered in the Nettie
Stakes, an event with a purse of $30,000 added.
The big opposition in this race will come from Trudie
Tudor who will probably be ridden by Hawley. If so, the
rider for A Musical Formal will likely be Robin Platts.
Sports in brief
Ran into Jim "Red" Loader at the Hawks junior
practice Sunday afternoon. Loader, now a resident of
Petrolia has completely recovered from a heart attack
more than a year ago. He said he would take another year
off from any coaching duties.
Bill Fairbairn of Exeter will be trying to gain a spot
with the Toledo Goal Diggers in the International hockey
league.
Fairbairn played most of last year with the Lucan-
Ilderton Jets after suffering an injury in a pre-season trial
with Port Huron.
The coach this year at Toledo is Ted Garvin who had a
very brief stay with the Detroit Red Wings after a
successful coaching career in Sarnia and Port Huron.
One of the newest expansion clubs in the National
hockey league, the Washington Capitals are holding train-
ing camp at the London Gardens and will be seen in a couple
more exhibition games.
The Capitals handled by ex-Bruin Milt Schmidt will
meet the Detroit Red Wings Wednesday, October 2 and will
take on the* other expansion team from Kansas City, the
following Saturday. Both games are at the Gardens.
The new coach of the Windsor Spitfires in the Southern
junior OHA grouping is former NHL star Dick Duff,
First practice sessions for the Roanoke Valley Rebels
in the Central hockey league will be held October 8. Hensall
native Jack Chipchase is expected to be one of the
mainstays of the club.
Chipchase has been named the "most valuable and
most inspirational player on the Rebels team for the last
couple of years,
Al Kalirie of the Detroit Tigers is only one hit short of
reaching the 3,000 mark in the American league. Kaline
slammed his 299th base hit Sunday afternoon and should
reach the coveted mark this week, probably in his horrie
town of Baltimore.
A member of the Point Edward junior club when they
played the Exeter Hawks a few years age, Len Fontaine has
jumped from the Detroit Red Wings to the Michigan Stags
of the World Hockey Association.
In Our Showroom
South Huron High School's two
football teams opened the Huron-
Perth Conference season on the
right foot Thursday with con-
vincing wins over Central Huron
of Clinton.
In the opening game of a twin
bill on the South Huron grounds,
the local juniors downed Clinton
by a score of 13-1. The senior
Panthers finished a good day
with a 27-18 decision.
In an exhibition doubleheader
in Strathroy, Tuesday, South
Huron clubs didn't fare so well.
Both clubs came out on the short
end of the score.
The juniors suffered an 18-0
setback while the seniors were
edged 7-6.
Early Lead Disappears
After running up a 20-1 lead at
half time the senior Panthers
were forced to hang on late in the
game as Clinton came on strong.
The Clinton club was able to cut
the South Huron margin to 20-18
midway through the fourth
quarter.
The only concentrated second
half attack by the Panthers came
late in the fourth period. The
defensive team came up with a
good performance and got the
ball back near the midfield
stripe.
The big play in the scoring
series was a 32 yard reverse by
Ken Pinder. Brian Taylor took
the ball over in two tries from the
eight yard line. Rob Dickey
booted the extra point.
Clinton took a 1-0 lead in the
first series of plays in the game
taking advantage of the wind to
kick a single point.
Halfway through the first
quarter, Van Tuckey broke
through the Clinton line and
blocked a kick. He was able to
come up with the ball and raced
40 yards for a touchdown.
Consistent running by Brian
Taylor, Doug Mclsaac and Dave
Little Scoring
In the junior contest, neither
team could come up with much
consistency on the offence,
The first half produced only
four points as South Huron scored
three points on a field goal from
the toe of Paul Brooks and the
Clinton team punted for a single
point.
The first touchdown of the
game came in the third quarter
when quarterback Perry Pooley
hit Steve Knight with a 20 yard
Lovell kept the ball in Clinton
territory for most of the opening
period.
Early in the second, Doug
Mclsaac swept around the right
side of the opposing line and went
27 yards and another major
score,
Late in the second half, Dave
Lovell scored the third South
Huron touchdown on a four yard
gallop. Instrumental in getting
the ball into scoring position were
runs of 17 yards by Taylor and 25
by Lovell.
On the next play, Wayne Oke's
