HUSKING CORN -- The husking is the worst part of the corn roast but these members of the Exeter United
Church attending the hayride and cornroast at the farm of Maurice Love were probably thinking of the
good eating to come. Husking are from the left, Alf Andrus, Jerry MacLean, Norm Whiting, Deb Whiting
and Karen Love. In the background is Doris Hodgson. T-A photo

Eastern Star elects officers
We all face embarrassing
situations, moments when our
usually brilliant minds refuse to
function. I could fill a page with
my red-faced recollections.
What is more humiliating than
showing a visitor around your
home town and getting lost?
Giving and following direc-
tions are two of my poorest
endeavours. I directed one repair
man to the lake instead of our
house. If you give me directions,
don't tell me to turn north or
south. Make it a simple left or
right turn, please.
Forgetting names is another of
my weaknesses. One day I was
shopping with a girl friend. We
encountered another acquain-
tance of mine, Introducing the
two girls seemed the polite thing
to do. Unfortunately I couldn't
remember the second girl's
name.
We exchanged idle obser-
vations about the weather, while
I searched frantically for a clue
to her identity. She left before I
succeeded.
A similar escapade occurred
recently on the telephone. When
I answered, the voice at the
other end of the line sounded
familiar, but I couldn't im-
mediately identify the caller.
While I tried to picture her
face and add a name, the conver-
sation passed the point where I
could inquire who was calling. A
game of pretend ensued until I
recognized the mystery lady.
The vague note in my voice
probably betrayed my plight.
Another type of frustration
happened in Clinton the other
day. I parked the car, hopped
out, popped a 'nickel into the
meter and hurried into a store.
When I emerged about a half-
hour later, I wondered why my
meter showed the time-expired
sign. A half-hour remained on
the one beside it. Then I realized
I had placed my money in the
wrong slot, If I had received a
ticket . .1
Drive-in theatres jinx me. The
first time I parked at a drive-in I
stopped the car too far from the
speaker. I backed up and edged
closer. Tliudi The car bumper
nudged the post.
Call me foolish or stubborn,
but I soon returned . This time I
was determined to park perfect-
ly. And I did!
When I left, however, I feared
hitting the car behind me.
Therefore I didn't back up far
enough. As I pulled away, the
front bumper of my car brushed
the rear bumper of the vehicle
ahead of me. Fortunately no
damage resulted, and the
gentleman driving the other car
was a "gentleman."
You can't call me a quitter. I
recently returned to the drive-in.
Believe it or not, nothing
happened.My jinx has perhaps
ended. At least, I haven't pulled
the speaker from the pole — yet.
Without qualms, I relate these
predicaments to you. After all,
everyone remembers em-
barrassing moments they'd
rather forget.
Ruth Ann Flaxboard Zurich was
the lucky winner.
