Neighbour's husband rides a unicycle
Coming to small town Ontario
from small town. Saskatchewan
has been "quite an experience"
for the Smith family.
Helen, her husband Iner, their
children, Dean, 8 and Melanie, 5
and their Pekingnese, Teddy
moved here July 2 from Lum-
sden. They are now living at 294
Sanders st, West.
Both she and her husband are
originally from north Saskat-

earlier this year. Helen said their
house was right across from a.12-
foot dike, holding back the water,
If it had broken, "the water
would have come •to the eaves of
our house," she said.
"When someone said Exeter
had had a flood I said, well we're
experienced flood fighters," she
said smiling,
In her short Stay in Ontario,
-Helen has noticed a few dif-
ferences about this part of the
country.
"You don't have any back
alleys."
Back alleys? They're gravel
lanes, she said, not alleys really,
that run behind houses for gar-
bage collection.
She also remarked on the
number of brick houses, In
Lumsden most houses are all
frame and painted every color of
the rainbow. Brick is used for
decoration.
She thinks Saskatchewan
towns are getting smaller
because most major highways
bypass them. The highways here,
she said always seem to go
through them,
She and her husband have been
to the canning factory to watch
them do the pea crop.
"I've never seen peas har-
vested like that. The first time I
saw a truckload of peas I couldn't
believe it," she said.

Peas in Saskatchewan are only
grown in people's gardens, she
explained.
They like to spend some of their
evenings bike riding. Mr. Smith
rides a unicycle which Helen says
has created a bit of sensation
around the neighbourhood.
She enjoys general
housekeeping, and does much of
the sewing for the family. "It's
quite satisfying to be able to
make a dress for just $15," she
said.
Her daughter, Melanie, was
five before she had her second
store-bought dress.
The Smiths have moved five
times in the past 11 years but
never as far as Exeter, But Helen
reports they are "quite happy" in
their new home.

The response to the proposed
Day Care Centre for Exeter
hasn't been overwhelming but
Marilyn Hohner, co-ordinator of
the project isn't discouraged.
To date Marilyn has received
13 responses to the questionnaire
placed in the T-A two weeks ago.
These responses indicate that
there are 21 children involved.
"Most of these reponses are
from people I don't know," Mrs.
Hohner said, and she is still
hoping to hear from some
mothers to whom she has already
spoken about the plan.
Mrs. Hohner a field worker for
the Ministry of Community and
Social Services took the proposal
for a Day Care Centre to Exeter
Council several weeks ago.
Council suggested that she send
out questionnaires to determine
how much interest the towns-
people have in a municipal Day
Care centre.
Grants for such centres are
available from the Day Care
Nursery Branch of the Ministry

vices and Mrs. Hohner felt that
Exeter should take advantage of
the available funds.
Once she has received suf-
ficient response from the
residents, Mrs. Hohner will meet
again with the Town Council,
Mrs. Hohner, said that Council
wanted her to make a list of those
interested. "Possibly, even with
this few responding, they would
think the project worthwhile,"
she said.
Mrs. Hohner a full time em-
ployee of the Ministry with young
children of her own feels,
however that in a town the size of
Exeter, there should be more
than 13 mothers who are either
working or thinking of working
and would like to take advantage
of the service,
"Perhaps once it is operating,
there will be more people in-
terested in sending their kids,"
she said.
Mrs. Hohner is planning to
spend her vacation knocking on
doors and contacting people, in
order to gain more support for
her proposal.
She will be contacting the
Health Unit with forms to
distribute to interested mothers.
Mrs. Hohner said that perhaps
the response was low because
people didn't really know enough
about it. "There is no way I can
get to everyone, I'm so busy now,
but if they would contact me I
could probably give some more
information," she said.
If town council rejects the
proposal for a town operated Day
Care Centre, there is another
route that we can take, Mrs.
Hohner said.
A co-op of interested parents,
formed into an approved cor-
poration would be eligible for the
same grants as a municipal
centre.
She said, however that a town
operated centre would benefit a
greater number of people and
would be less complicated. "A lot
of women would work if they had
a reliable place to leave their
children."
The centre would be subsidized
by the government so that those
who normally couldn't afford a
babysitter would be able to work
if they wanted. "It is to the adv-
antage of the government to pay
$60 to $80 to subsidize a child in
