Critical of directoes dismissal Local woman invited
back for third time
for the third year in a row,.
Kaaren Batten, of Exeter-, will be
participating in the "Festival of
Arts and Crafts Sale" at StA•at,
ford,
Kaaren will be . one of the 00.
artists-craftsmen showing at the
third annual festival held in the
Stratford Arena on Lakeside
Drive from Friday to Sunday.
Kaaren, has b.een working for
two weeks, getting .her pottery
and wall hangings ready for the
show. She will be taking ap-
proximately 50 pieces as well as
several wall hangings.
Kaaren said that most of the
things she is taking to Stratford
this year are functional. She has
found in the past that she does
best at the sale with the, .smaller
utilitarian pieces.
Carol 4ned4.4 Exeter, who has
been to the last two festivals, ,has
decided not to attend this year
but will be on hand to help
Kaaren set up her display.
The exhibition sale includes
original works from ..5a selected
Canadian artists and craftsmen.
Framed art will be represented.
as well as crafts such as toys,
pewter, leather work, woven
goods, pottery, candles, wall
hangings, sculptures .and
jewellery.
The festival is sponsored by the
Women's Committee of the
Stratford Art Association.
Pear Editor:
We all know we are living in .a
democratic country, but from
time to time we come up against
a situation when we see .a man's
democratic rights being
threatened. Each time we Sit by
and do nothing to prevent this We
are one step nearer a dic-
tatorship,
I bring such a situation to your
attention. Mr. Don Rawlings
came here a year ago as ad-
ministrator at the ARC
Industries in Dashwood, He had a
good educational background,
but more valuable still, he had
experience working with'
retarded adults in a sheltered
workshop,
Last week, right out of the blue,
with no warning of dissatisfaction
with his methods, he was asked to.
resign. The reason given was the
vague accusation that the ARC
was not being run "at its full
potential," This brings a number
of interesting questions to mind.
Is the board talking about the
potential of nineteen adults
between the ages of nineteen to
fifty? Or are they talking abent
the potential of nineteen adults
who have just begun to enter and
participate in the world .outside
their sheltered home? Some have
never gone to school so can
neither read nor write. Some Are.
like five year olds when it comes
to coping with new ideas and
situtatiens. I wonder if the board
had, considered what "full
potential" really means. It would
be hard to define in the case of
this group of such various
abilities,
It takes a person with great
patience and understanding and,
I might add, training, to cope
with the situations that arise in a
factory workshop of this type,
This experience and training Mr,
Rawlings has.
The next question I would like
to ask is, "How many of the board
have ever taken the time to ac-
tually spend an afternoon at the
ARC and watch the trainees at
work?" I have been over several
afternoons and I was greatly
impressed with the ingenious
ideas Mr. Rawlings had thought
up to cope with their inability ta
remember instructions and even
to count articles for packaging.
There was no feeling of boss
and workers.. It was like one big
family, which is the only at-
mosphere these people could
function in.
I wonderhowmany people know
of the extra one and a half hours
he put in for free each day so that
he could be there when the early
bus came in; of the miles be has
travelled and the hours of his
own time he has spent publicizing
the "ARC" and getting
organizations interested enough
to contribute equipment to the
ARC. He has even used some of
his own equipment to help the
ARC get on its feet.
could mention many other
reasons for regretting that Zurich
may lose so good a citizen—
among them, his attempt to
organize Cubs as well as the fact
that his son has been chosen to
supervise the Zurich playground
for the summer,
Has this situation arisen with a
unionized factory, an in-
vestigation would have been
necessary before such a
dismissal were possible. It makes
one wonder if some form of
legislation should be passed to
protect the innocent victim in less
protected professions, To have
one's reputation questioned
without being able to fight back is
not only frustrating, it's un-
democratic,
We must remember that the
ARC belongs to the community
not a small group of individuals
who seem to wield a very un-
wieldy axe. This is the second
administrator who has felt it in
the short time the ARC has been
organized.
- You service clubs have shown
your interest in contributing a
van and expensive equipment to
the ARC, Why not contribute
further by demanding an ex-
planation of the present problem
and seeing that it is made public.
Yours truly',
(Mrs.) Norma Siebert

Mr. Editor:
Sunday, July 7, at the in-
tersection of Main and Huron
Streets where the new lights were
" put a while •back, they were
painting the street lines.
Such construction work ought
not to be allowed on The Lord's
day. What ever happened to the
Lord's Day act. The town council
should be ashamed to allow such
an occurrence.
It is sad that some people can't
respect the Sabbath. There are
six days in which we are to work,
working on Sunday is not
necessary, and is not God's will.
I do hope that town council, in
future, will watch out for such
occurrences and be as concerned
about this incident as they are
about other less important
subjects.
Thank you,
