By Ross Haugh Good news "Ali, there's good news, tonight." That was a favorite greeting of an American news commentator back in the 1940's. We have good news this week after sort of an ominous report in this column last week regarding the problems be- ing encountered by the Huron-Perth baseball league. The information we had last week pointed towards a very small league of possibly only four teams. At the time of writing the league will be going with at least six teams and possibly eight. In addition to the four teams mentioned last week, Clin- ton, Thorndale, Arva and Exeter, the Dashwood Tigers will definitely field a club along with Zurich. The Zurich entry has been missing from the league for a couple of years and will be very welcome on the scene. According to Bob Hoffman most of the Dashwood Tigers who had considered retirement will be back in action including manager Glenn Webb. Expected back in a Tiger uniform are fellows like Bob Webb, Pete Ravelle, Bud Desjardine, Gord Vincent, Stan Lovie and Dave Rata, If these players get back into regular action the Tigers will certainly have the nucleus for a contending team. At Zurich, Percy Bedard is heading the rejuvenation of the intermediate club there and seems to have enough prospects for a formidable club. A Huron-Perth league meeting is being held in Clinton tonight, Thursday to finalize entries and draw up the schedule. Two teams from the south are being invited to the meeting in Clinton and may become part of the league. They are Lambeth and Thamesford. Bob Hoffman also tells us one of the strong teams each year in OBA competition, Corunna is looking for exhibition games and will be in Clinton trying to arrange some extra contests. With the possibility of additional teams it looks as if the Huron-Perth, one of the oldest intermediate leagues in the province is ready to enjoy one of its best seasons. On the minor scene, a strong juvenile league has been lined up by the WOAA. Included in the loop are Goderich, Clinton, Seaforth, Port Elgin, Kincardine, Arva, Exeter and Dashwood, The Dashwood entry is actually a combination of forces from Crediton, Zurich and Dashwood. Some local dukes It's good to see such a large representation of players from this area on the roster of the London Dukes this year. Bill Shaddick of Hensall has been the regular third baseman for the Dukes for several years and Ron Sadler of Sylvan has been cavorting at shortstop for about the same length of time. They are now being joined by Barry Baynham, Bill Fairbairn and Jim Carey. Baynham will be using his speed to advantage for the Dukes on the base paths and in patroll- ing center field. Bill Fairbairn appears to have the second base position locked up. Good news for the Dukes is the return of Dick Hames to the pitching mound after a year off due to a sore arm. Added to the pitching staff are Ed Gelinas from Northern Ontario and Joe Adam, a hard thrower from Sarnia. It's all over Several different emotions were evident throughout Canada and the United States at about five o'clock Sunday afternoon. In Philadelphia jubilation broke loose as the Flyers won the Stanley Cup. In Boston gloom spread after learning of the loss by the Bruins. Probably one of the most popular came from thousands of wives throughout the hockey world as they breathed a sigh of relief. Hubby may now be able to look after some of • the household chores which have been neglected for some time with the comment, "wait until Stanley Cup play is over". The win by the Flyers was significant and well earned. Despite their apparent bulliness at times, the Philadelphia club were dedicated to the task at hand and probably the most important they were hungry. The quite different approach used by coach Fred Shero is getting lots of attention. While some of his coaching and practice techniques could be classed as somewhat un- conventional he certainly obtained results. The diversity of the Philadelphia club paid off especial- ly against the Bruins. Regardless of the circumstances whether it be penalty killing or power plays Shero could throw any player on the ice and they produced the desired results. In one of the between period radio broadcasts of an ear- ly final game we heard CBC announcer Fred Sgambatti tell about some of the Philadelphia practices. At that time the big subject was how the Flyers and Bobby Clarke in particular were gaining a large percentage of the face-offs. Apparently Shero would spend about 20 minutes strictly on face-off situations with all of his Flyers paired off in battles to gain possession of the puck. This proved to be very important especially when the regular centre was moved out of the face-off circle by the officials for some discrepancy. The only Bruin to have Much success against the Flyers in face-offs seemed to be Greg Sheppard and on several occasions he was at centre with Phil Esposito moving to a wing spot. Most of the plaudits are going to Bernie Parent, Bobby Clarke and Rick McLeish but the entire Philadelphia club deserves a lot of credit. The Watson brothers with little NHL experience were steady on defence, But, the big difference was in the check- ing department. The Flyers led by Terry Crisp and Dave Schultz were instrumental in keeping the Bruins pretty well disorganized. Crisp who has been in the big league for quite a while after starting his career with the St. Marys LincoIns was all over the ice Whenever he was sent out by Shero and respond- ed with consistent and persistent checking. Table tennis Four Newberry, S.S, college students elairn a world's record in continuous doubles table tennis play after a ses- sion lasting 45 hours and two minutes. The previous record was 42 hours and one minute. xecutive director of the Canadian Table Tennis Association, Jose Tomkins, said yesterday a tour of eight Canadian titles by the Indian national table tennis team may have to be cancelled because of lack of air fare. T-A photo Area sports fans will have considerable interest this year in following the activities of the London Dukes in the Ontario Fastball League, Five players with local con- nections are expected to be regulars in the Dukes line-up. Bill Shaddick, a native of Hensall has been with the Dukes for several years and is the regular third baseman again. Two members of last year's Exeter Expos baseball team are also in the lineup. Barry Baynham will be patrolling centre field and Bill Fairbairn will be cavorting around second base. One of the catchers on the club is expected to be Jim Carey, formerly of Mt. Carmel and Exeter. The shortstop for the London club for quite a few years Schedule for juvenile ball The schedule has been released for the Western Ontario Athletic Association involving area juvenile baseball teams, The exhibition season gets underway tonight, Thursday when the Exeter juveniles travel to Dashwood to meet the Dash- wood-Crediton-Zurich Combines. Added to the pitching staff are Ed Gelinas from Northern Ontario and Joe Adam of Sarnia. Terry Wade formerly of Creditor' and Exeter is a member of the Dukes coaching staff. In their next home games the Dukes will host Newmarket at Labatt Park Saturday night and Kitchener, Tuesday night, In Tuesday's league opener, the Dukes dropped a 4-2 decision.
