The float will promote non- smokers' rights using `Gasp" ( Group Against Smokers Pollution) materials. The plans were announced at the annual meeting of the Huron-Perth Association held at the Com- munity Centre, Brodhagen, Wednesday night. Jack Hughes of Simcoe, past president of the Ontario TBRDA was the guest speaker. He said the anti-smoking campaign started four years ago by the federal government was not as successful because cabinet ministers, members of parliament and other govern- ment officials continue to smoke when being interviewed on television. Mr. Hughes was critical of John Munro who introduced the campaign when he was the health minister, because he usually had a cigarette going when he was on television. He suggested the federal government should hand over more of the $600 million from tobacco taxes to cancer research. Now $1.4 million is spent an- nually on research. Of this, 25 percent was raised by the Canadian TBRDA and its branches, Mr. Hughes reported. He suggested that educating people on the dangers of smoking will be more effective in the long run than trying to ban cigarette advertising. He said it is im- possible to ban cigarette smoking completely, but as more and 7,'""A' DA7 n. more people find out what smoking can do, to their lungs, fewer and fewer people will smoke. Mr. Hughes said there are not as many people smoking now as there used to be but there are more lady smokers. Mr. Hughes concluded by saying that while TB has been brought under control in Canada, it is not beaten, and respiratory diseases present a much wider field and more funds are needed for research. Rev. Garbutt Smith, Stratford, local president of the association said Easter seal campaign returns have reached an all-time high. The per capita return is 31.7 cents and population support is 10.7 percent, the highest in the province. Net campaign receipts for the two counties amounted to $30,518. Campaign costs were kept down he said by using more volunteer workers. Rev. Smith quoted Dr. N. C. Delarue, a prominent chest surgeon, who said that one in every five persons is in hospital as a direct result of cigarette smoking. Dr. Delarue had said the risks of alcohol are minimal compared to cigarette smoking. Rev. Garbutt Smith was re- elected for a second term as president. Other officers are: past president, Ivan Forsyth, Kippen; vice-president, Miss Eileen O'Brien, Goderich and Mrs. Frank Dodds, Stratford, Among the committee chair- men elected was Mrs. J. Cann, Exeter who will co-chair the education committee. Dr. Frank Mills, Goderich is the medical advisory. Teresa Ondrejicka of Exeter will be member of the youth board. Huron District High School.
