DASHWOOD
Don Nisbett, Reeve of Ward-
sville, also vice-president of the
Ontario Association for the
mentally retarded addressed the
meeting of the South Huron and
District Association Wednesday.
He invited all present to register
for the province-wide convention
of the Ontario Association to be
held at Trent University,
Peterborough, May 15-18.
Being chairman of the com-
mittee on adult services of the
O.A.M.R., Mr. Nisbett was
especially interested in the ARC
Industries building at Dashwood,
the new facility for the workshop
and rehabilitation training in
which the meeting was held. He
and Mrs. Nisbett were taken on a
tour of the premises.
Mr. Nisbett said that the whole
philosophy of the relationship
between voluntary associations
such as the Associations for the
Mentally Retarded and govern-
ment was undergoing thorough
study and the "feed-back" from
locals such as South Huron and
District is very helpful.
Much of the care given for-
merly under the Department of
Health is now given under the
Ministry of Community and
Social Services and the advice of
the voluntary agencies is im-
portant as the new Ministry
develops its program.
Mrs. Kathleen Whitmore of
Seaforth, the chairman of the
"Flowers of Hope" committee
presented a colourful display of
packaged seeds and church
bulletins ready for distribution in
Mental Retardation Week, the
week before Mother's Day (May
5-12).
Persons donating five dollars
or more will receive a receipt for
income tax deduction purposes
and each donor of any amount
will receive a small package of
seeds for "flowers of hope". This
is the new hope held out for
today's retarded children, and
today's adults who were
yesterday's children and missed
many of the opportunities now
available.
