The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1974-04-25, Page 23Members of the South Huron
and District Association for the
Mentally Retarded have ex-
pressed regret that the counties
of Lambton and Huron have
decided against providing grants
for the ARC Industries workshop
in Dashwood.
The Association had requested
a $10,000 grant from Huron and
$5,000 from Lambton.
Case Van Raay,IDashwood,
said many other counties in
Ontario provide funds for the
retarded workshops in their
communities and expressed
disappointment that Huron and
Lambton had not followed this
example.
Essex gives $10,000, Kent
provides $5,000 and the City of
Chatham donates $8,000 per year
to their workshops, he explained.
He said the lack of funds from
the county level will result in
financial problems for the
operation of the Dashwood
workshop, where 16 trainees are
now engaged in a variety of
activities.
The Association's budget will
have an anticipated deficit of
$23,000 unless public and private
funds can be secured.
Mr. Van Raay and fellow
finance committee member,
Harry Knip, said the alternative
was to reduce the operation of the
workshop.
However, the two said they
would be contacting municipal
councils in the area served by the
workshop in an effort to solicit
their financial assistance.
The two men noted that money
appeared to be available at the
county, provincial and local level
for many projects that were not
as important as training retarded
adults.
As an example of their
