Cecil Wilson plays
parts in 'Donnellys'
By IRENE HAUGH
Theatre London is to be
congratulated on its latest
production of The Donnellys
which concludes Saturday night.
Local interest in the play was
added with the appearance of a
former South Huron District High
School teacher in an acting role.
Cecil Wilson who taught
languages here for many years
appeared in five scenes.
The combination of music,
dialogue and film has been used
to good effect to produce an in-
teresting view of a legend from
the history of this area.
Although author Peter Colley
doesn't take sides he appears a
bit sympathetic to the Donnelly
family. •
, The story begins in Ireland in
the 1870's and portrays the
religious situation which exists in
that country today.
The play shows the Donnelly
family practically being chased
out of Ireland, heading to Canada
with trunks and suitcases and
finally settling in Biddulph
township.
Those expecting a rough and
rowdy drama will probably be
disappointed.
An overhead screen above the
huge set added to the play with
flashes of the barn burnings and
other skirmishes.
Playwright Colley and artistic
director Heinar Piller
dramatically reconstructed the
tragedy based on historical
events and documented facts.
Augmenting the unity musical
director Berthold Corriere
composed original music for the
production with lyrics by Peter
Colley. All costumes and the set
were designed by resident
designers Olga and Antonin
Dimitrov,

Family celebrates parents'
5Qth wedding anniversary
April 21, Mr,. and Mrs. K. H,
(Ted) McPherson of Toronto and
Grand Bend, celebrated the
anniverary of their wedding
which took place at ThOford 50
years ago.
The celebration was held in
Thornhill at the home of their son
Paul, his wife Irma and children
Cheryl, Scott and Crai$.
Also present was another son
Ray, his wife June and their
children Bruce, Kathy, Laurie
and Heather; a daughter Jean,
her husband Gordon Publow and
their children, Linda Kemp and
husband Danny, Ronnie, Kenney
and Scott Publow, and their
great-grandchild Donna Jean
Kemp.
A sister of Mrs. McPherson's,
Miss Ruby Pollock of Hamilton,
March tried to wake you. She
shook you gently. But you just
stirred a little and settled down
for another nap.
Then April came along. She
was more persistent than her
sister March, She shook you
once; she shook you twice. When
you failed to respond, she
whispered in your ear, 'Wake up,
sleepy-head! You've got some
house cleaning to do."
Upon hearing these words, you
yawned, stretched, and sat
upright shedding your gray
coverlet. With sleepy eyes, you
peered at your drab surroun-
dings. There certainly was much
work to do!
First you dumped a bucket of
rain over the landscape and dried
the earth with your sunshine. Into
every nook and cranny you
probed with your sunbeams, until
the last bits of dirty snow were
whisked away. At the same time,
you melted the ice and set the
rivers free.
With a brisk wind, you then
swept the dead grass and leaves
your head contentedly. The
horizon blended a sapphire sky
with an emerald land; sunbeams
glistened on a distant brook;
robins flitted to and fro carrying
strings, straws and twigs,
branches, on which green sequins
shimmered, danced with a
playful breeze; and the daffodils
smiled back at you. Your work
was almost complete.
I represented your final chore.
YOU revived my senses, which
had been numbed by Old Man
Winter, Your sunshine tickled my
face; my eyes were entertained
by Nature's colourful displays;
your happy tunes delighted my
ears; and my nose detected the
scent of clean, moist earth.
Gradually my, heart was filled
with the anticipation of long,
sunny days to come.
At last your work was finished.
Thank you, Spring.
from the fields, lawns, and flower
beds, Bending low over the
ground, you smiled with
satisfaction, You discerned fresh,
green blades among the tufts of
brown grass, and you also noticed
stubby sprouts pushing through
the black soil. Soon colourful
flowers would decorate the scene.
While you worked, you listened
to the raucous cawing of crows
and the pleasant chirping of
wrens, Presently, however, you
noticed two robins perched on a
naked branch.
"That will never do," you
clucked to yourself. So you
watered the trees with gentle
raindrops and warmed them with
golden sunshine. You hovered
nearby coaxing tiny green buds
to emerge on the branches.
"It won't be long new," you
assured your feathered friends.
Instinctively they sang a merry
song as they searched for twigs
suitable for their nest.
Later you climbed to the top of
a grassy hill. Surveying the
panorama below, you nodded
