Back stage work is already in commencement with Mrs. Bev Reid in charge of scenery, and Mrs. Marion Sweet heading up the costuming department, Health - hints for house plants Watering your houseplants may seem simple, but indoor gardeners can make mistakes by watering too much, too little, or at the wrong time. Russ Gomme, a horticultural specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, says that factors such as temperature, humidity, type of plant land soil and size of pot cause water requirements to vary. "Avoid keeping the soil wet, because this can rot the roots and starve the plant of oxygen," he says. "Wait until the soil becomes dry on top, then soak it." Plants in small pots dry out faster than those in large pots, because there is less soil to contain the moisture. The type of pot also affects watering frequency; plastic pots retain moisture longer than clay pots. The growth of plants also has some influence, When plants are growing quickly or blooming, they should be watered more, During their resting stage, water them less. Plants growing in shaded areas require less water than those in direct sunlight. Humidity can be improved by setting pots on saucers filled with pebbles and keeping the pebbles moist, A simmering tea kettle will also help, or you can mist- spray your plants often with handy containers available at garden supply centers.
