Sincerely, carry Robinson 4. 4- * Dear Mr. Editor, I would like to Use your newspaper to address an open letter to the parents of Exeter Public School children, Parents, do you know on which route your children are coming and going to school? Are they crossing at the traffic lights, or with the crossing guard? Or are they crossing the streets just where they please, with no caution to traffic or safety. I realize that we all get lax in reminding our children to use the proper routes coming and going to school. The police dept, and school are doing what they can to stop these bad habits. But I feel it is up to us as parents to help educate our children and really make sure they are obeying the traffic rules. So please, parents, take the time to check up on your children. Let us take action now before we have a serious injury. Help our police dept.and school. It really is up to us. Thank you Mrs. Donna Livingstone * * * Dear Editor: I would like to reply to The Readers Write letter from Glen Wright in which he stated he would not sign the Right to Life petition being circulated because our position is too "rigid". Much of what Mr. Wright says shows some knowledge of the development of the human fetus and some awareness of the present huinan condition. I must disagree with his conclusions, however, which are based, I feel on some misconceptions and lack of information. First of all, our position is that the unborn child be protected under law concerning the most basic of rights - that of the right to life. There are a number of persons in our society who have been given the right by law to make judgements as to the value of these unborn children's lives. Sir; After trying to get rid of a TV interference we've had in the Town of Exeter for the past year, I've decided to write this letter to the T-A. This interference affects Channel 13 only. At times many viewers will completely lose channel 13 to the interference for hours. I have contacted Com- munications Canada, and had them come to Exeter, but couldn't get them to do much about the interference. They said, if they knew it was in- terfering with a lot of viewing then it would have a priority." They would then bring in equipment and spent time to find the interference. Through the media con- venience of the T-A, I want the viewers who are bothered by this interference to write to Com- munications Canada. Tell them about our little problem. The address is: Communications Canada 30 Duke St. West Kitchener Ontario N2H 3W5 For any Christian surely there must always be a deep moral resistance to abortion. It should always be the last and most desperate resort, undertaken in anguish. Nevertheless it is the moral conviction of Many Christians, persons with much more respect for human life and with much more personal hurt on the line than is suggested by the advertisement, that therapeutic abortion be a matter of human conscience to be deicided bet- ween a woman and her doctor, The facts are that many pregnancies can be utter human disasters for everyone con- cerned. As a result some Roman Catholics and some Protestants both have been willing to accept it as a lesser evil in a number of situations. I publicly protest the immoral method of Right To Life in at- tempting to shock an unwary public to action. I most certainly respect their social concern and appeal to them to continue their right to invite public con- sideration of government policy and its implications. But surely we have a right to decent debate and level headed opinions, the kind which was proposed to Right 'l'o Life by Glen Wright the week before. How about Right To Life using its head as well as its heart if it wants to sponsor real dialogue. My concern is also that of Glen Wright, that this most difficult and perplexing human dilemma be given the chance to be discussed by people of all stations Very truly Jim Hewitt therapeutic abortion, Such heavy-handed tactics are not likely to shake alive responsible individuals, I seriously question the moral integrity of the sponsors of this advertisement and those who have allowed its publication. Is this to be taken merely as an indication of the level of concern on the part of a group of people who happen to oppose abortion? Or is there something more serious involved here? Does the moral dilemma justify public shock treatment? Does any end justify any means? Does the Right To Life representation in fact not con- tradict its own moral criterion by using any means available to "arouse" public opinion? It seems to me that there is here a dangerous move taking place as a result of the actions of such sensationalism, Though not often recognized, it is not becoming clearly a question of whether abortion is yet to con- tinue being seen as a moral issue. Both Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions have seen a tension between the woman who wanted or needed an abortion and the potential or actual life of the fetus, Most churches who have undertaken a serious study of the matter have concluded that this tension is one which involves real claims on both sides. This is not merely a civil rights issue. Abortion is the killing of a living being, and this is the case whether we judge that being potentially or actually human. Like many citizens. I have, for years, been under the impression that the regulations required that: a) School buses must have flashing lights operating when children are being loaded or unloaded. h) School buses must have a sign or lettering, indicating "DO NOT PASS WHEN SIGNALS. FLASHING". c) Motorists - approaching from either direction must come to a full stop until the flashing lights stop, Did you realise that in areas where speed limits are not more than 35 miles per hour none of these regulations are requirements? Indeed, the Act allows the council of any city to exempt highways under its jurisdiction where speed limits may be more than 35 miles per hour, As a father and citizen, I submit to you that the protection provided a child in a 36 mile per hour or over zone, is just as vital to a child in a 35 mile or under zone. Being hit by a car at any speed could indeed cost the precious life of a youngster. This week I have written all members of our Provincial Parliament asking for in- troduction of a bill amending these inconsistencies in the High- way Traffic Act. I implore your investigation and public support as a Jour- nalist, Respectfully, Hugh Crothers * We feel that no one human being has the right to make such a decision about another human being. Your argument that "a mother and her family have priority over a Six week ovum" and that "they begin to lose that priority as the unborn grows older" indicates a belief that the value of a human being should be based on his size and age, which carried to its logical conclusion would mean that a three foot tall, 40 pound five year old would be less valuable by definition than a six foot tall, 185 pound fourty-five year old. Your statement that you "believe there are some cir- cumstances not only physical but emotional and psychological that may justify abortion . . (My emphasis) indicates a misun- derstanding of the facts. The following are qualified medical opinions concerning the physical reasons for abortion. Dr. Roy S. Hefferman, of Tufts University, told the Congress of the American College of Surgeons .in 1951: "Anyone who performs a therapeutic abortion (for physical reasons) is either ignorant of modern methods of treating the complications of pregnancy or unwilling to take the time to use them." That statement was made 23 years ago and I imagine the fantastic developments since then in medical science would make it no less true today. In 1967, Dr. Alan Guth-luckier, leading proponent of abortion, wrote in his book, Abortion: Yesterday, Today and Tor- morrow, p. 9: "Today, it is possible for almost any patient to be brought through pregnancy alive, unless she suffers from a fatal illness, such as cancer or leukemia, and, if so, abortion would be unlikely to prolong, much less save life." As for the psychological and emotional factors, abortion has never been proven to be therapeutic in these areas, and conversely evidence does not show that pregnancy and the birth of a child influence ad- versely the course of schizophrenia, manic depressive illness or the majority of psychoneuroses. Pregnancy is very rarely fatal for the woman, but abortion is always fatal for the baby. We should be looking to ways we can help the pregnant woman, I can assure you that the Right to Life 1-ticyq,11W11, will continue in its program of "education" as long as there are persons who are in need of the facts. Sincerely, Carla Revington 4- 4- 4- Dear Sir: As a Journalist, your support is needed to correct what strikes me as an extraordinarily dangerous situation in the High- way Traffic Act. Dear Editor I was very disappointed with the recent advertisement sponsored by Right to Life, trying to sell their views on abortion as well as plugging the lecture and film to be shown at the high school. To what depths of .moral ob- scenity and crass com- mercialism will those who take a certain stand on this issue be allowed to spark public opinion! I suppose the film and the slides were a continuation of the same horror pictures and sensational tactics publicly displayed in order to arouse blind human sentimentality! Such methods do not encourage serious debate and consideration on such a complicated moral issue. They do succeed in frightening and, quite possibly, damaging the lives of those who have already been or are presently involved in the throes of this human dilemma. Pictures of unborn children dumped in a garbage bag and the implications thereof in terms of the motives and level of moral conviction on the part of those involved in such tragedies only drive the wedge further and further between those of different moral conviction on the matter of This Week's Inflation Busters! -CG DISCOUNT 433 MAIN -8T. 235.1661 EXETER
