My parents have driven for over thirty years. Neither of them can recall being involved in a roadblock. On the other hand, I've driven for only three months. I have already experienced the intrigue of watching a policeman check the licences of the other motorists while waiting for him to approach my car. Lucky me! The incident occurred a week BEAN 'N WIENER SUBMARINES — A great way to satisfy a famished family, .or that hungry gang coming in after a hockey game, Dressed up' wieners reat for famished families progress, Mpm and I rummaged through the glove compartment for my ownership card and through my purse for my licence. With this task accomplished, we were still faced with a lengthy delay. My impatience grew. I wanted to make a left turn, and my signal light was already blinking. If I continued through the check point, a detour was inevitable. The intersection between my car and the policemen was tempting. Should I turn discreetly and proceed homeward? In my imagination, I pictured the officers jumping into their patrol car to pursue me with red lights flashing and siren wailing, The neighbours would wonder, "What's she been up to?" Common sense thus persuaded me to wait. Besides, I was curious. My curiosity was not abated however, until I watched the six o'clock news. When our turn finally arrived, the policeman noticed my signal light. He glanced at the two of us inside the car. Then he motioned me to turn, I guess we didn't look like bank robbers. ago Monday. My mother and I were travelling between Exeter and Clinton about four o'clock in the afternoon. On the outskirts of Exeter, we received our first hint that trouble was brewing. A police car with its dome lights flashing was parked on the shoulder of the highway. One officer strode toward the yellow line, while another remained by the vehicle gripping a shotgun in his hand. "Whatever it is, sir, I'm innocentaionest!" I told him silently. No attempt was made to stop my car. Was I relieved! Of course, I wasn't nervous; I was merely in a hurry, My relief was short-lived, though. A few miles down the highway a second roadblock loomed. The scene was not a typical TV thriller. Instead of four cruisers barricading the road, only two sat on the sides., ,Furthermore, there were no helmeted policemen crouched behind the vehicles with rifles cocked, (Thank goodness.) Rather two officers checked licence plates and permits. The traffic line-up was long.
