FOR AL,.L GOOD SPORTS
A busy
week
This next week will be one of the busiest of the season in
this area and the weatherman could play a big part with the
right kind of weather at the right time.
Beginning Friday, the student council of South Huron
District High School is sponsoring their annual Winter Car-
nival.
While weather forecasts this week leave plenty to be
desired as far as snow is concerned, students are looking for
plenty of the white stuff.
Snow is a necessary evil for sculpturing and other outside
activities such as toboganning, snowmobiling and skiing.
Most of the regular indoor carnival features are again
part of the program. They include tricycle races, pancake
eating contest and a broomball game.
The grudge broomball game brings together the
school's teachers and grade 13 students, In recent years we
have been unable to determine which team has won.
Rules are unusually thrown out the window and the lack
of competentand unbiased referees and scorekeepers is very
evident.
Again this year, both sides are predicting a victory.
Principal Joe Wooden said this week, "the teachers will
come up with their usual decisive victory.
Need good weather
While SHDHS students need snow for the weekend, Ex-
eter Lions Club officials are hoping for good weather early
next week.
The Exeter Legion hall will be the site Tuesday for the
first Exeter Lions club Sportsmen's Dinner.
The energetic committee headed by Lion Don Taylor
has lined up an exceptional list of head table guests.
Theguest speaker is Emmett Askord, one of the top after
dinner speakers in the sports field, Ashford, recently retired
as an American league umpire was the first negro to reach
the big time in his profession.
Completing the list of baseball celebrities are Detroit
Tiger relief ace John Hiller and Tim Foli of the Montreal
Expos.
In addition to Henley, football will be represented by
Glenn Weir of the Montreal Alouettes and University of
Western Ontario Mustangs coach Frank Cosentino.
Add to this, fellows like former NHL roughneck Lou
Fontinato, horseman, Mac Cuddy, curler Jim Waite, golfer
Ken Doig and soccer enthusiast Jim Henderson and the
dinner is bound to be a success.
Tory Gregg will be the master of ceremonies and the
popular sports announcer is bound to keep. the .program
moving.
A lifelong friend of crippled children, Whipper Billy
Watson will also be in attendance and is expected to bring
along a Timmy.
The reception starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Legion
Hall. Here's your chance to meet your favorite sports
celebriity and help the cause of crippled children at the
same time.
Tickets are still available at $25 each and the donations
are tax deductabl 001/1 0.1 • ,
Atn;•excellent weekend
Exeter's observance of Minor Hockey Days over the
weekend was a huge success. Six hockey teams from Tren-
ton, Michigan along with a large contingent of parents
produced a friendly rivalry.
In Saturday's first round, the Exeter and Trenton clubs
broke even with six points apiece. Sunday it was a different
story with the visitors winning four of the six contests.
We had a chance for a few minutes Sunday morning to
take with Jim Harris of the Trenton hockey organization.
The Trenton operation is an expensive one with ice time
costing $45 to $50 per hour and some of the teams are forced
to travel up to 20 miles for extra practices.
Harris told us sponsors of the open travel teams pay as
much as $500 per season while the cost of sponsoring other
teams is around $125. In most of the minor classifications,
Trenton has a travel team, an A club and six house league
teams.
The Exeter teams and their parents will be making a
return trip to Trenton on the weekend of March 9 and 10.
A beautiful complex
We visited the new sports complex in Tillsonburg for a
few hours Friday and were impressed by the excellent
facilities offered.
The recreation administrator of the complex is Stan
Moore, who is well known for his junior hockey coaching
stints at St, Marys, Strathroy and Hespeler.
All sports except curling and golf can be enjoyed at the
Tillsonburg facility. In addition to the regular arena, the
complex includes an indoor swimming pool, health club,
senior citizens room and large auditorium.
We will be telling our readers more about this complex
in succeeding columns. A committee has been appointed in
Exeter to study the grant structure for a sports complex.
A good exhibition
Sports fans in the area have an opportunity to take in a
good exhibition hockey game at the Zurich arena, Sunday
afternoon.
The Canadian Forces team from London will meet the
South Huron intermediate all stars in a two o'clock contest.
The all stars will be formed fromthe best of the six dis-
trict league teams from Shipka, Huron Park, Zurich, Hen-
sall, Centralia College and Arkona.
The Shipka Colonials currently lead the league. The
Colonials have dropped their last two starts after winning 15

scoreless. Mike Anstett and

weekend and the visitors went
home with most of the spoils.

Trenton, Michigan were the
feature attraction of Exeter's
annual observance of Minor
Hockey Week.
The teams from the two par-
ticipating towns broke even in
Saturday's action, each winning
twice and two games ending in
ties but Sunday Trenton clubs
walked away with victories in the
first four games played.
The rivalry throughout the
weekend was friendly with more
than 130 adults from Michigan
accompanying the youthful
hockeyists.
Saturday's action got un-
derway officially with Exeter
mayor Jai* Delbridge dropping
the first puck. He welcomed the
visitors along with EMHA
president Bev Skinner.
Before each of Sunday's six
games, members of the Exeter
teams presented each player
from Michigan with an Exeter
Minor Hockey Association
pennant. In return, the Trenton
organization presented its Exeter
counter part with a trophy.

donated a trophy which will go to

Michigan and a weekend series
on March 9 and 10.

Exeter Waxers and scored vic-
tories by decisive scores of 13-0
