February 1 to 3 has been chosen
as the date for the annual winter
Weekend at South Huron this
year. A full schedule has been
drawn up with many new events
being introduced along with the
regulars. Below is a tentative
plan of the weekend agenda,
Friday afternoon in keeping
with tradition the winter carnival
will open with the annual
broomball game between
graduating students and the
teachers. The teachers, with a
little practice and a lot of luck,
might possibly break their record
losing streak this year. The
competition will be tough,
however, and they will definitely
have quite a struggle against the
power drives of the students,
Mornington Drive, a well-
known band will play at a dance
to be held Friday evening.
Following this there will be ice
skating on an outdoor rink tat the
school) and sleigh rides around
the school plus live en-
tertainment in the coffee house
while the band cleans up and the
gym is prepared for two feature
length movies which will be
shown.
Saturday morning, bright and
early the pancake eating contest
will get underway, Other indoor
activities will include bubble
blowing contests and the pie-
throwing contest.
For the second year, the
tricycle race will be held with last
year's champs trying to retain

Also, judging of snow ,culp-
tures created by various clubs
and classes will take place.
A concert featuring Mahogany
Rush is planned for Saturday
evening.
On -Sunday, it has been
suggested that everyone be in-
vited to the Pinery Provincial
Park where facilities for
tobogganing,skiing,snowmobiling
and iceskating as well as trails
for snowshoeing and cross-
country skiing are available.
This is only a tentative agenda
for the winter weekend, but
hopefully most of the events
mentioned will be held so start
planning your entries into the
various contests and begin
organizing your teams for the
events.
Lists will be posted across from
the main hall sometime this week
and tickets for the weekend will
be available soon, A definite
schedule will appear in the next
edition of the Guardian.

Actually Marino had never
played the guitar at all until the
age of 14, While he was in the
hospital recovering from a bad
acid trip that had lasted two
weeks, he picked up a guitar and
almost immediately he was
playing perfect lead.
He started out by playing songs
by the Grateful Dead but soon
grew tired of them and became
obsessed with the music of Jimi
Hendrix. And he's been playing
the Hendrix style ever since.
Come to S.H.D.H.S, on February
2 and listen to the sounds of
Mahogany Rush.
Admission will be $2.50 each or
$5.00 a couple. The concert will
begin at 9:00 p.m.
sings amazingly like Hendrix, he
has a style all to himself.
Marino said in an issue of
Music Canada Quarterly
recently, "I disagree with
everyone when they say I play
like Hendrix because no one will
ever be like Hendrix. He was one
in a million, one in three billion,
Personally, I'm flattered that
they think it sounds like Jimi
Hendrix, but I want them to
notice that I'm trying to do my
own thing."
In June of 1973, the group was
named the best rock group in
Quebec in a poll held in that area.
The group consists of three
members. Frank Marino, who
plays lead and writes and
arranges most of the music they
play; Jim Ayoub who plays the
Saturday, February 2, the halls
of South Huron will rock to the
great sounds of Mahogany Rush.
These recording artists, headed
by a brilliant guitar wizard
Frank Marino, have been
described by Bill Gray of The Sun
as having "a sound that comes at
you in waves of intensity so thick
as to, at times, take your breath
away. Their musicianship is
excellent. As a unit they're tight
and precise, and individually
they've got the skill to hit
everything they aim at,"
The group got together very
early in 1972 just after Marino
turned 17. They cut a single
called "Buddy" under the Kotai
label. The record was a tribute to
Jimi Hendrix and it, like all of
their music, had the Hendrix
style.
They also released an album
titled, Maxoom, in 1972. The
entertainment section of the
Montreal Star describes the
album as being real, not phoney.
It reports that Maxoom is a
combination of the original
resources of Harwood, Ayoub and
Marino.
It has " songs rhrigitig"
everywhere from heavy rock to
the blues, all with the same
Hendrix style. However,

"There are more than 100 empty
whisky bottles in the closet!

"Don't ask me," the husband
replied. "I never bought an

Two boys were loafing along
the road trying to decide what to
do. One said to the other: "I'll flip

riding. And if it lands on its side,
we go home and study,"

present a concert at the Revival

Tabernacle, Saturday evening.
John Bend of Toronto was the
guest speaker at Sunday ser-

At the morning service he
spoke on the need for praise in the
heart bringing out the fact that
the joy of the Lord is our
strength. In the evening Mr. Bend
pointed out the outstanding
character of Caleb because he
wholly followed the Lord. He said
we too like Caleb can say, 'Lord
give me this mountain', if the
power of God is real in our lives.

Thou anointest My Head was
the theme taken by Rev, Ewart
Madden at the United Church,
Sunday. He pointed out that the
old song, There is a Balm in
Gilead to ease the Sin-Sick Soul,.
is a song of healing, or anointing,
and this includes anointing with
the Holy Spirit. He said the
healing balm is poured on all
willing to receive it.
The girls' section of the junior
choir sang an anthem with
Cheryle McIntyre and Wendy
Hearn singing the solo parts.
The annual congregational
meeting was announced for
January 27, with luncheon after
the service. Each family is asked
to bring sandwiches and finger
desserts for their own members.
Doctor: "I'm sorry to tell you,
but your wife's mind is com-
pletely gone."
Husband: "Well, I'm not
surprised. She's been giving it to
me a piece at a time for twenty
years."
"But why should a big strong
man like you beg?" the old maid
asked the tramp.
"Dear lady," said the hobo, "it
is the only profession I know in
which a gentleman can address a
beautiful woman without an
introduction."
Concert
Last night, (Wednesday), a
concert was held at South Huron
featuring the well-known
recording artists, "Liverpool."
All proceeds from this dance will
be donated to the Canadian
Cancer Society in memory of our
friend and classmate at South
Huron, Paul Robinson.
