Pork prices in 1974 will remain
.strong in comparison to beef,
James Boynton, executive
secretary of the Ontario Pork
Producers' Marketing Board told
a Grey-Bruce Farmers' Week
session.
"A small consolation which
farmers never had before is that
people and governments realize
an abundance of food cannot be
taken for granted," he said.
Continuity of production is
essential for increasing
production of pork, he said.
The great unknowns to the pork
producers are the costs of
operation, which are sure to be
higher and the cost of grain which
is unlikely to be cheaper, at least
until the 1974 harvest. And even
then it may go up.
There is a relationship bet-
ween price of pork and price of
beef, Increased beef marketings
areexpected in earlysummer, the
high demand season. Mr.
Boynton hopes for only moderate
pork price drops if marketings
proceed evenly into the fall
months.
He hesitated to make recom-
mendations on herd size."
Some forecasters predicted 1 /4a
shortage of.a11 red meats in the
first half of this year. In Canada,
it was possible that marketings'
will not hold up to the level of last
year. The output could be down
six to seven percent if cut-back
signs in the prairie provinces are
accurate.
Good grain prices prompted
the western decision to retrench
in pork.
Mr. Boynton said stability in
the west would be better Canada-
wide because if grain prices drop,
the western farmer will get back
into hogs.
The current strong price for
Ontario weanlings may reflect
either a restored confidence in
the industry or a shortage of
weanlings. It also may reflect
strong purchases to offset the
heavier receipts of the tax year.
At the same time, weaning
prices in the west are unusually
depressed. One report placed
them as low as $4 a pig.
Most of the barriers that have
thwarted artificial insemination
of swine have been breached and
hog farmers can look for the
same lift in quality that dairy
cattlemen experienced about 25
years ago, James Wilkins of
Woodstock, secretary-treasurer
of the Ontario Swine Artificial
Insemination Association told the
meeting.
The two major obstacles
preservation of semen and
detection of heat period in sows,
are being overcome, he said.
Addition of semen extenders
have made the insemination
more realistic and new methods
of freezing semen have extended
limitations. Frozen semen now
has a life of four or five days,
However, liquid semen is still
used generally by the unit.
Many trials were made to get
an effective means of deter-
mining whether a sow is in heat,
including the playing of a
recording of the love call of a
boar. The best so far is a syn-
thetic spray which the in-heat
sow responds to.
Unlike cattle insemination,
technicians will not go herd to
herd to inject the semen. Because
of the nature of swine and im-
practicability of having
technicians at the farm for the
recommended two inseminations
1$ hours apart, a course is given
to the farmer who does the in-
semination himself.
In an increasing *number of
cases, it is the farm wife who
takes the course and Mr, Wilkins
said the women are proving to be
More proficient than their
husbands at the job. The
technique is much easier than
with cattle as the swine's
reproductive tract lends itself to
artificial insemination,
The final problem to be
overcome is the synchronization
Of the sow's heat periods.
