FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Busy days
ahead
The next couple of weeks will be providing plenty of ex-
citement for sporting fans in the district.
In addition to the many hockey playoffs which will be
getting underway shortly, tournaments, Minor. Hockey Days
skating carnivals, Sportsmen's Dinner are only some of the
extra activities planned.
. The first attraction will be Exeter's observance of
Minor Hockey Day in Canada. This year this popular event
will take in two days and will have an International flavour.
Six minor hockey teams from Trenton, Michigan will be
making a two day stay in Exeter and will be meeting their
counterparts, in games on Saturday and. Sunday,
January 26 and 27.
On the Saturday, the regular house league action will
takelace in the morning with all boys having a chance to
show their hockey talents for parents, other relatives and
friends.
f' At 12 noon, the all star team action starts with the Ex-
eter atom and bantam "B —s meeting outside competition
for the next two hours.
The International aspect of the day starts at 2 p.m. with
the Exeter Waxers meeting the Trenton novice team in the
first game.
Special opening ceremonies will include playing of the
national anthems of the two countries and an exchange of
gifts by players of both teams.
In following games continuing until eight &clock in the
evening the games will involve atom, two pee wee, bantam
and midget games.
Sunday's action will get underway at 11 a.m. and will
run until 5 p.m. with six games between the same Trenton
4nd Exeter clubs.
A large number of Trenton parents are expected to be
making the trip and they will be entertained by the mothers
gnd fathers of the Exeter youngsters after the games Satur-
day evening concluding with lunch at South Huron District
High School.
The following weekend February 1 to 3 will be a busy
one for students at South Huron High school as the annual
Winter carnival is held.
A scheduling of events may be found this week on the
Guardian page 01 this issue. Some of the popular events of
the carnival are included on the list and all the students need
is co-operation from the weatherman in providing enough
snow for snow sculpturing.
The pancake eating contest always proves popular and
is being held at breakfast time on the Saturday morning.
Tricycle races in the school halls which proved exciting last
year are being repeated.
The next two events on the area sports program are
very important to those interested and involved in the
welfare of crippled children.
First of all on Tuesday, February 5. the first Exeter
Lions Club Sportsmen's Dinner will be held at the Exeter
Legion Hall.
An impressive array of guests has been lined up by the
energetic Lions committee headed by Don Taylor.
the MOntreal Expos has just recently been
added to.,, he- head table guest list.
Add4onffils fellows like Emmett Ashford; .John Hiller,'
Lou Fontinato, Mac Cuddy, Jim Waite, Frank Cosentino,
Tory Gregg to name only a few and the end result should be
a very successful evening.
The annual Crippled Kids weekend at The Pineridge
Chalet near Hensall is planned for the following weekend,
February 9 and 10.
This event always draws top names from radio and
television in London and Wingham in a friendly battle of
snowmobile races.
A dream team
In a recent issue of Hockey Digest we read an in-
teresting story by Stan Fischler, a New York hockey writer.
Fischler listed the 20 players he would select if he could.
start a major league hockey team from scratch and had
enough scratch to do it. At today's prices and the following
players it would probably take 20 million dollars.
We could give plenty of arguments to his selections and
make alternate choices, but it's only one man's opinion. He
apparently has never heard of the Toronto Maple Leafs as
they were snubbed completely.
Heading the list are the goalies chosen. Phil Myre and
Gerry Cheevers. On the defence are Bobby Orr, Ed Van
Impe, Brad Park. Guy Lapointe. Steve Lhirba.no and Pat
Stapleton.
The first forward line consists of Walter Tka.czak. Bill
Fairbairn and Steve Vickers. Comprising the second unit is
Phil Esposito. Mickey Redmond and Frank Mahovlich.
The third combination has a completely French speak-
ing line of Gil Perreault, Rick Martin and Yvan Cournoyer
while the final threesome includes Bobby Clarke, Gordie
Howe and Bobby Hull.
Oh yes. the coach Bep Guidolin with assistants Racket
Richard and Glenn Hail. Any second guessers?
