Minors get three points in six Shamrock loop games Tourneys again The Christmas season while not quite as popular as Easter or the spring school break for hockey tournaments is beginning to have a few. On the two days after Christmas the Exeter Minor Hockey Association is sponsoring its fourth annual novice hockey tourney. Ron Horn who was one of the originators with Gord Kirk tells us a total of 12 teams will be in town December 26 and 27 for the two day event. This tourney brings together the six, seven and eight year old hockeyists who will be our stars of tomorrow. During the two days, games will be played in an "A" and "B" division with the champions being decided on the night of December 27. The Exeter Waxers will be the local representation. This team while seeing little actual competition so far this year has had plenty of practice sessions. A feature of the Waxers is the fact, the club has four coaches which enables the youngsters to get a lot more in- dividual attention and a more thorough knowledge of the basics of the game of hockey. Anyone with time to spare during the Christmas holidays could do a lot worse than drop into the Exeter arena and watch some novice tournament games. We will guarantee that you won't see any more desire in any class of hockey regardless of age. These fellows are just learning their trade and will put on a good show for the spec- tators. A different tourney At the same time as the novice youngsters get underway in Exeter another tournament will start in Cambridge. This is the •CCM International tourney bringing together three European teams and the same number of Canadian clubs. The teams from across the ocean are from the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Sweden while the Canadian en- tries are senior teams from Brantford and Galt along with the Toronto Marlboros of the OHA Junior "A' loop. Russia will have a powerful entry in the Wings of the Soviet. The'club is coached by Russian national team coach Boris Kulagin and contains about 10 members of the national team. The Swedish team will command plenty of attention in this country. Two members of last year's,team Borje Saim- ing and Inge Hammarstrom are solidly entrenched this year with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL. The Czech club won this same tournament a year ago with five straight impressive victories. Series games are being played in Toronto, Cambridge, Brantford, Ottawa, Windsor and Orillia. There will also be six exhibition games between the ,totiNig,visiting clubs and Junior A or Senior A teams in Sud- LOtidoric WellailiBarrie, Guelph and Belleville. The Moscow WAgetwill be at the London Gardens -on Stinday night December 30 to meet Bill *Long's London Knights. London owner Howard Darwin of Ottawa is attempting to get, playing help from some of the National hockey league teams. At the moment Darwin.has the blessing of NHL presi- dent Clarence Campbell to deal directly with the teams not in regular league competition that night. The Montreal Canadiens are not scheduled on December 30 so we hope several of the Habs will be iri the London line-up. We have a couple of tickets for the game in our posses- sion and will be looking forward with great interest to see- ing the Russians in action. Want a longer working week In a sharp contrast to most occupations these days when employees are looking for shorter work weeks standard bred horsemen in Ontario were asking for a longer week during the winter months. The Ontario Jockey Club announced Sunday that racing would be held at Greenwood this winter Saturday afternoons and Monday, Thursday and Friday nights. Owners had been urging the OJC to hold races five times a week when Greenwood opens on December 31 after a two week layoff. To make the decision a little easier to take the Jockey Club is offering a bonus of between $125,000 and $150,000 for purse money. At the end of the 11 week winter meeting the bonus money will be prorated to the owners of every horse that has won purse money. The horsemen wanted more days of racing for economic reasons. It is tough to get enough races for horses, especially those at cheaper levels with only 40 races a week. During the rest of the year Greenwood has six cards and nine races each week while Garden City and Mohawk have five nights with 10 events each. Jockey Club president John Mooney has assured horsemen that regulars on the circuit would be given preference. He said he would guarantee an invitational trot and pace each week for the best horses on the grounds. The invitational usually goes for a purse of $6,000. To help eliminate cheaper horses, a new minimum claiming price of $3,000 will be put into effect. The minimum price has been at $2,000. If a horse at the minimum level does not finish at least fifth three races in a row it is being considered that the horse be removed from the track. Humour from the diamond It may be a little early for baseball talk with winter just getting to us in earnest but we have run across a couple of baseball stories which are interesting. When neat the end of his pitching career, Cleveland In- dians pitching aee found it tougher and tougher to win. A fan sent in a book and suggested Rapid Robert be sure to read it. When fob opened the package, he discovered the title of the book was "HOW to Pitcn" by Bob Fuller. And then there is the one about Rex Barney a former pitcher with the Brooklyn Dodgers Who said "If home plate had been high and outside, I'd be in the Hall of Fame." Barney is currently the public address announcer for the Baltimore Orioles. The three Exeter hockey teams in the Shamrock minor league were in action on two occasions this week. The beet the Exeter clubs could do in Strathroy Monday was gain a single point in 1.1 tie in the bantam game. Strathroy won the pee wee and midget games by respective scores of 7-6 and 4.2, In the pee. wee contest, Steve Skinner scored twice to lead the Exeter goal getting, Scoring in single fashion were Wayne Parsons, Jeff Newby, Preston Dearing and Doug Brooks. Dave Bogart assisted on two goals while Larry Dawson, Wayne Parsons, Brian Mercer, Dave Cann and Danny 'Bell picked up an assist each. In a Wednesday three game set against Lambeth at the Exeter arena the only Exeter win came in the bantam game by a score of 5-2. The Dark Angels continue in first place with 40 points but the Canners and Dart Sharks are right behind in a second place deadlock with 39 points apiece. The schedule has reached the halfway mark and Jean Estey has compiled the highest score for women with 174 while Alex Jackson's 145 is best for the men. In the number of games won Ann Romaniuk has 15 victories to lead the female division and Jake Lindenfield has 17 wins the best for the men. In their other start this week, the Hawks were trounced 9-4 by the Tavistock Braves on Exeter ice, Friday night. The Hawks record over the past couple of weeks has been very impressive. They now have six wins and a tie in their last nine outings. A big game for the Hawks comes up this Friday night at the Exeter arena when the league leading Belmont Sunsets will supply the opposition. The Exeter club goes to Stratthroy for a Sunday meeting with the Falcons. Captain leads Captain Harry Smits led the Hawks in the scoring department in their 4-2 win over the second place Clinton Mustangs Sunday night, The first period remained scoreless. At 6.35 of the middle frame, Brian Kennedy put Clinton out in front as he fired the puCk past Bob Brand in the Exeter cage. About 10 minutes later the Hawks were back on even terms as Smits found the mark for the first time on passes from Kevin Bestard and Gerald Weido. It took the Mustangs only 18 seconds to get the lead back as Paul Johnson scored. The Hawks wasted little time in the third period as John `Mom- mersteeg tied the score at the 31 second mark.as he relayed a pass from Kevin Bestard into the Clinton net. The actual game winner came at the halfway mark of the final period. Harry Smits completed a three-way effort with Gerald Weido and Noel Skinner. The insurance marker was the result of an unassisted effort by Smits. Penalties were few and far between and only one goal came on a power play. The first Clinton Jets win exhibition The Lucan-Ilderton Jets were idle this week as far as the regular schedule of the Ontario Hockey Association Continental Senior league was concerned but they did participate in one exhibition contest. Friday night at the Ilderton arena, the Jets downed the University of Guelph by a 8-5 score. This coming week, the Jets are on the road for a couple of league games. They travel to Woodstock Friday night and go to Durham for a 2.30 Sunday afternoon game with the Huskies.
