Amalgamation of the municipalities in South Huron could only result in increased local autonomy and in greater efficiency in the provision of services. Such a move would be better initiated from the grass roots up than having it imposed from above. It would help retain authority at the local level rather than see it migrate to provincial and county levels. This brief comment is merely to urge our local governments to undertake a study of amalgamation, It would be beneficial in many ways. Yours truly, J. L. Wooden Dear Sir: It was interesting to note the consideration in Lambton toward some kind of municipal amalgamation. Your editorial comment suggesting that we take a look at this process for our own area deserves attention, For some time now it has been apparent that the South Huron area, viz., Exeter, Usborne, Stephen, Hay, plus the inclusive villages and police villages form a community of interest, This area could logically form a single amalgamated municipality with considerable mutual benefit. The South Huron area has approximately 13,000 people. If we begin to list the councils, boards, official and quasi-official committees, commissions and agencies that operate in the area as municipal creations, we can come up with a total of nearly 30. It could be demonstrated that such a large number of agencies experience frequent breakdowns of communication, A single government for this area cou,d consider such major Area fishermen are successful By TOM LESSARD Three men of the Park travelled to Manitoulin Island for a four-day fishing trip last week. Charlie Kennedy, Met Lather, and Don Glanville, braved cold weather to bring home a catch of speckled trout, cohoe and chinook salmon. The only complaint they had when they returned was the trace of mercury poisoning. Snowmobiles are creating a lot of disturbance among the ten- nants of the Park. Complaints are continuously being heard about the speed, noise, and the reckless driving between houses. There is plenty of room in and around the Park for all the fun and games snowmobilers enjoy without causing grief to their neighbours. With the Grey Cup game rapidly approaching, the Exeter Lions Club pool tickets are being sold very quickly in the Park. Get yours now.. Minor hockey pool winners for last Saturday's game were, John McNair, and Kris Cathcart. There are plenty of tickets available for the hockey dance on the 23rd. See any one of the members for yours. municipal responsibilities as planning, housing, recreation, sewage facilities, and so on for the total area and not for each single jurisdiction. We already have examples, such as the area fire board, Which suggest the desirability Of amalgamation, Sewage facilities are not planned for areas that should naturally be served, e.g., the Usborne and Stephen areas adjacent to Exeter. The impact of the Huron Industrial Park affects the whole area and is, therefore, of regional concern. One government for South Huron would not need to be a giant administrative structure since the population would still be quite small, It would have the advantages of avoiding present duplication and of providing a sufficient base to permit local savings in terms of the provision of professional services. Municipalities now receive 50 of their total revenue from the province. In South Huron it is probable that the figure is higher than this. Obviously, with such a financial contribution the province takes a major place in the local decision making process, The province has suggested, however, that responsibility for major policy will be turned back Sorority choose slate of officers Mary Ellison stepped up from vice-president to president at the meeting of Alpha Pi sorority Tuesday evening, The position was left vacant after the resignation of Diane Jeffries. Other new officers are Alice Beer as vice-president and Wilma Wraight as secretary. The theme of the evening program was "All together now", based on coordination of all aspects of fashion, including clothes, make-up, suitability, and personality. Debra Newby, Jay Skillender, and Glenda Wagner modelled outfits to represent the sophisticated look, the non- conformist, and the working girl. In other business, plans were made for the Christmas party. The meeting was held at the home of Alice Beer.
