FOR AL, 000D SPORTS. By Ross Haugh Exciting series The 1973 World Series which concluded Sunday was one of the most exciting we have seen for some time. It was far from the best as far as the calibre of baseball was concerned as both teams were guilty of shoddy fielding but created lots of excitement. In our opinion there were a couple of key situations which turned the tide for the Oakland Athletics. A's southpaw reliever Darryl Knowles struck out Rusty Staub on three pitches Saturday when the Mets had two runners on base after scoring their only run of the game. PitcherKenHoltzman's singlein the fourth inning started the athletics to a four run rally from which the Mets never recovered. Holtzman's hit was rather surprising as it was only his third appearance at the plate this year. The designated hitter rule in use in the American league this season didn't give pitchers much chance to bat. Oakland manager did let some of his pitchers bat after the pennant was clinched. Two things were very evident by their absence in this year's fall classic. Stolen bases and home runs were scarce. Only six home runs were hit by the two clubs. This is a low figure for seven games. In the 415 World Series games played since 1903, a total of 486 home runs have been hit. The average over the past 10 years in World Series play is two home runs per game. Neither manager took many chances on the bases. This is a far cry from the 1968 series when Lou Brock stole 14 bases against the Detroit Tigers. Another oddity this year was the fact none of the star- ting pitchers were able to go the distance. Jim Hunter came the closest Saturday when he was lifted in the ninth. Hunter's help came from Darrell Knowles who set a record by appearing in seven consecutive games. While this years series had its different aspects, some of the others in the past have also had unusual happenings. Take the 1960 set for instance. The New York Yankees won only three games against Pittsburgh but the scores were 16-3, 10-0 and 12-0. The Pirates won the seventh and deciding game by a score of something like 10-8 on Bill Mazeroski's home run. This series had more than its share of fielding errors. Only two clubs in history have gone through a World Series without making an error. They were the 1937 New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles of 1966. The most celebrated case of a manager deliberately sacrificing fielding skill for power at the plate occurred in 1968. Detroit Tiger mentor Mayo Smith replaced weak hitting shortstop Ray Oyler with outfielder Mickey Stanley. Al Kaline who took over for Stanley in right field batted .379 to lead the Tigers to a win over the Cardinals. At the unfamiliar position Stanley made only two in- significanterrors in 33 chances. Hockey time again Good news for all young hockey players in Exeter and area. Ice is in at the Exeter arena and another busy winter season is getting underway. Close to 30 youngsters attended the first practice of the all star atom team at the arena Friday night. The first home games for Exeter's minor teams par- ticipating in the Shamrock league will be Wednesday, Oc- tober 31 with Lambeth pee wee, bantam and midgets supply- ing the opposition. The Exeter junior Hawks will perform in front of their home fans for the first time on Friday, November 2. It will actually be the fifth start of the season for the Hawks. They started the season in Strathroy Sunday night by getting a 5-5 tie. From the results of the league's all star game played Saturday night it looks as if the Mitchell Hawks will be tough to dislodge as league champs. The Exeter figure skating club appears to be in for another successful season. President Jack Underwood tells us more than 30 boys have already registered for the power skating lessons. These classes for boys wishing to improve their hockey playing abilities through stronger skating are proving very popular. Club professional Brad Loosley is one of the best teachers of power skating in the province. Need coaching help The Exeter Minor Hockey Association needs some help in coaching and refereeing each Saturday morning during the winter months. Anyone with free time between 9 and 11 a.m. Saturdays would be welcomed to help in either capacity with the house league youngsters. Volunteers should get in touch with Bev Skinner, Alvin Willert or Bill Batten. Hawk pair reunited Two valuable members of the 1971-72 championship Ex- eter junior Hawks club are back together this year and members of the Fanshawe College Falcons. Centre Larry Haugh was with Fanshawe last year and was in the top five in the league scoring race. Joining him this season is his former linemate Steve Murley. The Falcons see their first league action this Friday afternoon at the London Gardens at 3 p.m. when they face Durham College. nreoe 70et% ere awe get ae,te REGISTRATION for Gymnastic Classes Saturday, Oct. 27 10 a.m. South Huron District High School (new gym) Fee: '5.00 The two football, teams a t South Huron District High School continued their season un- defeated streak Thursday by sweeping a doubleheader from Stratford. Central. The senior Panthers won their fifth straight Huron-Perth Conference game with a 24-12 victory. The junior club scored a very impressive 52-9 win in their fourth start of the year. The seniors are tied with the similarily unbeaten Goderich Vikings for first place and the junior situation has another deadlock between South Huron and Clinton. The next two weeks will do much to clear the championship battle, The Panther teams travel to Clinton today, Thursday for two games and go to Goderich the following Thursday, The only loss suffered by the Clinton senior team was to Goderich. Good Second Quarter Although they scored in every period, the 23 points chalked up by the Panther juniors in the second quarter were largely responsible for their 52-9 win over Stratford Central. The Panthers jumped in front 8-0 late in the first period. Tom Hayter recovered a fumble on the Stratford 35 yard line and on the next play Kevin Baker swept around the end for a major score. Baker notched two points on the convert as he took a pitchoutfrom quarterback John Vangerwen. Points came thick and fast in the second session. It started off with a two point safety touch and a 10 yard run by Kevin Baker for his second touchdown set up by a 15 yard gain on a sweep by Doug McIsaac, Paul Brooks booted the convert. Signal caller Van Gerwen went 30 yards on a sweep to set up Kevin Baker's third touchdown of the afternoon. The convert at- tempt failed. With time running out in the first half, Steve Jennison recovered a fumble on the Stratford three yard line and Van Canners top dart league The Canners have moved into a one point lead at the top of the standings in the Exeter Legion mixed dart league. The Canners now have a season point total of 15, one more than the second place Sharpshooters. Alex Jackson has amassed the highest single game score of 145. Doug Mclsaac carried in for a two point convert and the half time score was 31-0. Coach Doug Ellison sent his second string offence into the game and they responded with a quick score. Good runs by fullbacks Tom Hayter and Terry MacDonald set up a 15 yard touchdown run by Ken Pinder who repeated the same play for a two point convert. Doug Mclsaac chalked up the sixth Panther touchdown on a trap play good for 15 yards< The extra point kick by Paul Brooks hit the cross bar but bounced over successfully. On the first play of the fourth period, a cross pass from John Van Gerwen to Scott Flear was good for another six points and the convert attempt failed. A Stratford field goal late in the game completed the scoring. Kevin Baker with three touch- downs to his credit was named the best Panther backfielder by his mates and Bill Baker with strong blocking and tackling was chosen the top linemen. Baker was the top Panther ball carrier with 107 yards while Doug Mclsaac was close behind with a 101 yard total. Early lead holds In the senior contest, the Panthers marched to a 22-6 lead at the end of the first half and were able to hang on for the 24-12 decision. Stratford was first to reach the scoreboard notching an un- converted touchdown halfway through the first quarter. Wayne Regier chalked up the first South Huron major score on the next sequence of plays. The convert attempt failed and the score was tied at 6-6. On the third play of the second period, Wayne Regier was over the Stratford goal line again. This time Perry Stover passed to Brian Tuckey for a two point convert. Dave Lovell swept around right end and nine yards for the third Panther touchdown of the first half, An identical Stover to Tuckey play was good for another two points, A Stratford back was caught in his own end zone to give the Panthers a safety touch and their final two points of the game, The visitors scored another six points late in the game. Wayne Regier was the top ground gainer for the Panthers with 97 yards in 14 carries, The Panthers gained 191 yards rushing compared to only 23 by their opposition. The passing situation was reversed with Stratford gaining 131 yards to 61 r , by SH, Stratford picked up another 117 yards on Panther penalties to take a narrow margin in overall offence 271 to 267 yards. Stephen Orenchuk and Mike Miller led the Panther defensive unit with five key tackles apiece. The Exeter Hawks were on a busy schedule this week with some of the members of the team getting into five games. The Hawks gained only one point in their first two regularly scheduled OHA Junior "D" games. In Strathroy Sunday night they were held to a 5-5 tie by the Strathroy Falcons and in Mitchell Tuesday night it was 7-3 for Mitchell. In exhibition games, the Lucan Irish edged the Hawks 6-4 Wednesday night and the Exeter club edged Lambeth 2-1 at the Huron Park arena Friday night. The league's all star game was staged at Mitchell Saturday with the defending champion Hawks outscoring the best of the rest league 7-1, In Mitchell Tuesday, the Exeter Hawks held a 2-0 lead after two periods of play but were unable to hold on as the home town Hawks erupted for seven goals while the Exeter youngsters could score on only one occasion. Two of the Exeter goals were scored by Matt Muller. One of Muller's successful shots came on an unassisted effort and the other was the result of a pass from Tom Hayter, The third goal for the locals came from the stick of Steve Schroeder, League play co9tinues for the Hawks this week as they go to Tavistock Friday night for an engagement with the Braves and to Clinton Sunday to meet the Mustangs. Getting the Falcon goals were Dave Tanton, Barry Possons and Frank Wall. The two Exeter scores came within 30 seconds of each other in the last minute of play in the middle frame. Rick Ingram triggered the first successful shot on a play started by Steve Schroeder and Noel Skinner at 19.07. The second goal came from the stick of Harry Smits with the assist going to Randy Tieman. At 13.29 of the third period Brian Taylor scored for the Hawks to even the score at 4-4.
