Haugh Time to cut One of the toughest jobs for any hockey coach, especial- ly in minor ranks comes in the first two weeks of practices when he is called on to cut his club to a proper size. This chore faces Bob White of the Exeter junior Hawks this week. White used a total of 27 players in Friday's ex- hibition contest with the Lucan Irish which ended in a 3-3 draw. The Hawks who were in Lucan for a return contest with the Irish Wednesday night will be back in action Friday night at the Huron Park arena at eight o'clock. Opposition for the Hawks will be supplied by the Lambeth Flyers, The regular OHA season for the Exeter club starts Sun- day night when they travel to Strathroy. The first home game at the Exeter arena will be Friday night, November 2 when the same Strathroy. Falcons will be in town. Ice making operations started at the Exeter arena Tuesday and a good sheet should be ready by the weekend. Unusual tournament A recent girls soccer tournament staged by the northern district of the Middlesex Board of Education provided some interesting results. Teams from McGillivray Central„ Biddulph, Parkhill and East Williams participated in the six game tourney, Believe it or not, but all six games ended in a scoreless tie. Hard to say whether the offences were good or each team had excellent goalies. Incidentally, officials were in quite a quandaryas to the official champions. The trophy goes back to McGillivray Central, because they were the 1972 champs. At least they didn't lose it. Local Lincoln We are happy to report some interesting results from Sunday night's OHA Junior "B" hockey game between the St. Marys Lincolns and London Squires. Despite, the loss by St. Marys, local fans have lots to cheer about. All three Lincoln goals were fired by former members of Exeter minor hockey clubs: Perry Stover who is in his first year with the junior club from the cement town scored two goals. The other was notched by Randy Preszcator. He is starting his second term with the Lincolns after a successful year with the Markham Waxers in 1971-72. Close to striking The threatened walk-out or strike or whatever one wishes to call the threats by the Oakland A's early this week would have been one of the first strikes by an individual team. Last year's major league season was held up by all the clubs over grievances with the owners as a group. Charley Finley's action in sending Mike Andrews home is one of a continuation of moves the "A'" s owner has made since he took over the club. Sunday's game seen by millions of staunch baseball fans and many others who get interested only at World Series time was probably as exciting as one could want. But from a basic baseball view some of the action was almost pathetic. We certainly have to defend the play of all three players who may be ridiculed for poor defensive plays. The three in question are Willie Mays and Rusty Staub of the Mets and the aforementioned Mike Andrews of Oakland. Staub and Mays were in the lineup primarily for their hitting abilities. Staub, especially is not going to throw anybody out from his outfield position in his present physical condition. Mays' coordination was far from ideal Sunday as he appeared to fall down on several occasions. We would seriously question Yogi Berra's move in using Mays in the outfield. Willie is just ending a fabulous career. He is remembered for his exciting play and that's the way it should remain. The announcers in Sunday's game suggested that Willie in his prime could have caught one of the balls he missed with one arm tied behind him and blindfolded. It's a sorry state to see a hero of yesteryears struggling in a game which is televised across the nation. There's no question that Willie is an asset at the plate and should be used for pinch hitting situations only. The situation Mike Andrews found himself in Sunday was a bit similar. He was acquired by Oakland manager Dick Williams not for his fielding prowess but to be used as a designated or pinch hitter. We would hope that for the balance of the World Series both managers use their best players on defence and save the older sluggers like Mays and Staub for the key batting spots. In case anyone is interested we call the Mets to take the fall classic in seven games. The other major hockey team in the area, the Lucan Ilderton Jets hit the exhibition trail again Friday night when they host the Woodstock Royals at the Ilderton arena. The Jets open the regular season of the new Continental Senior league the following night when the Bothwell Barons invade the Ilderton arena. Fine football The brand of football being currently served up by the two South Huron District High School teams is well worth watching. Both clubs still undefeated will be at home this after- noon, Thursday for a double header with Stratford Central. Deciding of schedule champions, especially in the senior division could go right down to the final game when the Panthers travel to Goderich on November 1. Goderich and South Huron are now tied for first place. OHA JUNIOR `D' Exhibition Hockey Lambeth Flyers VS Exeter Hawks HURON PARK ARENA Fridciy, Oct.•19 8:00 p.m. The South Huron District High School senior football team continued their winning ways Thursday with a convincing 39-0 win over St. Marys at the local high school athletic field. The victory kept the Panther seniors undefeated in four Huron- Perth Conference starts and in a tie with the Goderich Vikings for first place. The battle for the regular season championship could go right down to the wire as the Panthers travel to Goderich to meet the Vikings in the final game of the schedule on November 1. The scheduled doubleheader Thursday didn't materialize when the St. Marys junior team disbanded for the season because of injuries. The South Huron juniors are also unbeaten in league play having won their first three games. The two SHDHS clubs are back in action this afternoon, Thur- sday when they play host to the junior and senior teams• froin Stratford Central, Strong finish In Thursday's win over St. Marys, the Panthers started slowly and were able to score one touchdown in each of the first two quarters, They came on strong in the last half to dominate play and double their scoring output of the first two periods. Coach Ron Bogart blamed a slow first half on over confidence saying, "we had no desire and missed a lot of scoring chances because of the lack of hustle." The first Panther score came late in the first quarter and the march started when Mike Miller intercepted a St. Marys pass and took it to the St. Marys 31 yard line. Regier and Paul Wayne Truemner took turns in carrying the ball near the goal line and the latter went over for the major score from two yards out. Gord Pryde was good with the extra point attempt. A high snap on an attempted St. Marys punt early in the second quarter set up the second South Huron score. Al Knight was able to recover for the Panthers on the $t. Marys 15 yard line. Paul Truemner gained a first down to the St. Marys five. The next two plays failed to produce a touchdown but on a third down effort Wayne Regier skirted the left end and went in untouched for another six points. The convert boot by Pryde failed to hit the mark. South Huron was awarded the ball early in the third period when the St. Marys centre made another errant snap. St. Marys actually recovered the ball after a wild scramble but South Huron got possession. Wayne Regier wasted little time in going the remaining two yards for a touchdown. This time quarterback Perry Stover passed to Brian Tuckey for a two point convert. Late in the third period, Perry Stover was struck in the eye and Bill Wilson took over at the signal calling position. On the third play from scrimmage, Wilson found Tuckey in the clear and he hit him with a successful 40 yard pass and run play good for the fourth South Huron TD of the afternoon. Another pass for a double convert failed to click. The next Panther score came midway through the fourth period as the result of strong pressure put by Wayne Oke and Stephan Orenchuk on the St. Marys passer who fumbled the ball. Oke was able ,to make the recovery. Hawks, Irish play draw The first exhibition hockey game of the season in this area resulted in a Friday night 3-3 tie between the Exeter Hawks and the Lucan Irish Six. The two junior teams met at the Huron Park arena and both coaches used all prospective playersin order to get a lineon the coming season. The game was close from start to finish with never more than one goal separating the two teams at any one time, The Hawks opened the scoring at 15.05 of the first period as John Mommersteeg scored on a pass from Brian Taylor. The Irish scored the only two goals of the second period. Mike McIntyre notched the first marker as he converted passes from Ed Legg and Brad England at 8.12. The go-ahead goal came from the stick of Ed Legg with less than two minutes remaining assists went' to Jeff Park and Mike McIntyre. The Hawks got back on even terms at 3.02 of the final session. Harry Smits was on the triggering end of the successful shot converting a pass from Bill Van Gerwen. • At 12.20 of the third period, Pete Gill scored for the Hawks on a three-way passing effort with Kevin Bestard and Wayne Regier. Only a minute later, the Irish were back on even terms with the final goal of the game. Referees Don Clarke and Gerry Overholt had a busy time han- dling a reasonably chippy game, calling 27 penalties with the Irish taking 14 of the calls. Tie in darts continues The Canners and Sharp- shooters are deadlocked for first place in the Exeter Legion mixed dart league after three weeks of regular play. Each club has a total of 12 points. A tie also exists for third place. The Dark Angels and Dart Sharks have equal records with .10 points. This week's scores were: Doublers 5 - Swimmers 0 Itchy Niters 5 - BA's 0 Dark Angels 4 - Scotties 1 BJ's 4 - Shiphunters Canners 3 Dart Sharks 2 Last Chance 3 - Winkers 2 Sharpshooters 3 - DR's 2 Friday's schedule is as follows: 8 p.m. DR's vs Canners Swimmers vs Dark Angels Dart Sharks vs Sharpshooters 9:30 p.m. Last Chance vs Scotties Itchy Niters vs BJ's Shiphunters vs BA's Doublers vs Winkers By TERESA ONDREJICKA Exciting, fantastic, and sen- sational are just a few of the words I would use to sum up South Huron's double header victory here Wednesday, against. Mitchell. The juniors got off to a good start displaying good shooting and real emphasis on their passing abilities. Mitchell and South Huron were evenly mat- ched throughout the whole game and it was anyone's guess who would come out the winner, Regular time ended with South Huron fans going wild and players in a spot of tension as the game lay in a dead tie 24-24, In the three minutes of overtime South Huron managed to chalk up four more points for a 28-24 well deserved victory, Scorers of the game were Gail Fuller with 13 in her favor, Gayle Ecker with a slippery nine, Cathy Vriese with a well displayed four, and Marie Jarvis, jump ball girl, with two. The senior team edged Mitchell 44-36 in a hard fought• battle that kept both teams busy on the court. From one end to the other, check after check, pass after pass, dribble after dribble. South Huron managed to come out on top always holding a commanding lead, right from the beginning and holding it to a strong finish. Scoring went to Deb Wooden.chalking up 20, Val Sweet tossing in 10, Lori Ayotte looping eight, and Susan Luther basketing six. An interesting observation I made was the number of loyal South Huron fans out to watch and yell their lungs out for the girls. The bleachers were packed. for the Junior game and it was clear that the fans showed as much enthusiasm as the players themselves, That's the second win for the girls and it looks like they are really starting to come on strong now. There's another game for you interested fans today Thursday at two o'clock when South Huron meets Seaforth in a double header game right here. The game promises to be good, so come on out - we've really got some winning teams! Show me a gallbladder sufferer who won't take his medicine and I'll show you a man with un- medicated gall! It took Wayne Regier only two plays to move the remaining 10 yards and to score. The convert pass attempt failed. The final score was set up on a 28 yard pass from Stover to Tuckey and a 14 yard gallop by Regier. Treumner actually carried the ball into paydirt, The convert attempt on a kick by Knight was wide. Final)° statistics showed the Panthers with a wide advantage in total offence with 361 yards gained compared to only 84 by their opposition., The Panthers also chalked up a total of 16 first downs, double the number accomplished by St. Marys. Coach Bogart listed numerous highlights responsible for the good second half showing of his club. He mentioned the excellent tackling of Stephan Orenchuk on kickoffs and the altertness of his defensive team in the second half in holding St. Marys to 12 yards in 14 carries. Also listed was the fine passing of Perry Stover and Bill Wilson and the receiving of Brian Tuckey. Paul Truemner was cited for good running and also blocking on end sweeps. John Vanderburgt came up with a key tackle to prevent a score and made a brilliant 15 yard runback on a St. Marys punt. SIGN on used car lot: "Cadillac, like new.
