About your hospItgl
Uulesg, One Spends a great deal
of time in a hospital, or unless one
is employed at a hospital, it is
difficult to understand just
exactly how such an institution is
operated.
There may be a number of
things which confuse, annoy or
are not understood by the public
at large,
Therefore, the Times-
Advocate, with the assistance of
South Huron Hospital
Administrator Alice M. Claypole,
is starting a hospital-oriented
question and answer column.
"It will enable us better to
serve the community if people
know more about the hospital
system in general and South
Huron Hospital in particular,"
said Miss Claypole.
The column will answer a
number of frequently asked
questions and any others which
may be forthcoming from the
readers.

Mrs. Frankel. She says that in
working with cancer patients as
well as with many other diseases,
it is a matter of morals.
"One can heal with the mind as
well as the body," said Mrs.
Frankel. "You fight with your
mind as much as you do with the
surgeon's scalpel."

Summer hours, from 2 to 5
p.m., Wednesday, Friday,
Saturday and Sunday, still apply,
but they will be shortened for the
winter months. Of course, groups
may visit at other times, if they
make arrangements ahead of
time, by phoning 245-0492 bet-
ween 1 and 5 p.m,
Schools are reminded that the
splendid display of Indian ar-
tifacts, arranged by the
Archaeological Society of South
Western Ontario, will be removed
on the weekend of October 14. So
if they have been thinking of
arranging a field trip act quickly,
A further supply df StniVenir
china has been obtained, and
small souvenirs, of interest to
children are now available.
Answer
No, the government does not
put up all the money to build and
run hospitals. But remember
even though it does put up much
of the hospital's "operating
budget" it is your money that
they are using.
This is the money you pay the
Ontario Hospital Insurance
Commission (OHIC) directly, or
through payroll deductions, plus
the money you pay in provincial
income and sales tax, and money
you have paid to the federal
government in income tax, of
which a portion is returned to the
provinces to help pay for their
health services,
Now when a new hospital is
built or extensions are added to a
hospital this is called the "capital
budget". The government will
normally only pay two-thirds of
this. The other third has to be
paid by the community through
local hospital taxes or the
hospital's own funds which ac-
cumulate through bequests,
endowments, or fund raising
campaigns.
With fall here and
organizations taking up activities
again after the summer break,
perhaps it is time for you to visit
the Strathroy-Middlesex Museum
to see some of the recent
acquisitors.
Among the recent articles that
have come in are a handwoven
blanket and a counterpane
(woven at Coldstream), a
rocking horse 100 years old, a
1914 electric coffee pot, a brass
kettle, a number of household
articles made of glass, pewter,
wood and china, some books and
pictures, a wooden wheelbarrow,
and ,some World War I equip-
ment, One of the interesting
pieces is an antique cradle, in
excellent condition, which is
suspended from pedestal ends.

Mrs. Emily Elston, chairman
of the Wingham Branch of the
Huron Unit of the Canadian
Cancer Society has received a
certificate of service in
recognition of her untiring efforts
on behalf of the society in this
area.
"I just do the best I can," Mrs.
Elston told the annual meeting of
the Huron Unit as well as the
Southwestern Ontario District in
Holmesville at the White Car-
nation Wednesday.
Special speaker at the event
was Mrs. Egmont L. Frankel,
CC., Toronto who is one of the
spearheads behind the volunteer
movement within The Canadian
Cancer Society. Mrs. Frankel's
work centres around Princess
Margaret Hospital but she is
well-known among cancer
volunteers in Ontario and
throughout the world.
"The word cancer is not a
dreaded word any more," said
Mrs. Frankel, who told her
audience that Canadians are well
respected in the field of cancer
research and treatment.
She said there was a time that
professionals within the field of
medicine feared volunteers.
However, today's volunteers are
"professional volunteers", she
said. She stressed the need for
each volunteer to be placed in his
or her "proper echelon" where
talents will be best utilized.
. The view of the volunteer has
changed over the years, said
