Ministers recall past
for overflow crowd

Exeter United Church was the
scene of another overflow crowd
as 1200 people gathered for the
centennial service on Sunday.
Two former ministers. Rev.
Robert Uiltz and Rev. A.E.
Holley and two candidates for the
ministry from this area, Rev,
Aldworth and Rev. L.C.
Harvey were present to bring
greetings to the congregation,
Each minister, with the ex-
ception of Rev. L.C. Harvey
spoke on a theme they had found
relevant in their ministry. Rev.
Harvey although present was
unable to speak due to health
reasons,
Rev. Aldworth who had been
raised here remembered the time
when a garden party had been
held to hear one of the area's first
radios. But when everyone was
gathered, the radio would not
work. The minister present at the
time had said that radio was not
an invention but a discovery of
something that had always
existed, Rev. Aldworth said his
ministry in Exeter. was the
discovery of God's love.
The privilege of sharing people
of Exeter's joys and sorrows had
been the highlight of Rev,
Volley's ministry,
Rev. Hiltz said one of the most
memorable occasions while he
was at the former Main St.
United Church was when they put
in glass doors so that the portrait
of Jesus could look over Main St.
Many other ministers who were
not able to attend sent greetings
to the congregation. These in-
cluded Douglas Warren, Harry J.
Mahoney, John Walker, Alex
Rapson, Ernest Lewis, and Jean
Stainton, wife of J.H. Stainton.
Two other ceremonies were
also performed during the ser-
vice. A plaque was presented
with the names of the 61 Sunday
School teachers who had taught
for ten years or more.
Rev. Snell received official
recognition as the assistant
minister and was welcomed to
the congregation. In his remarks
he recalled the time when the old
James St, Church was to be
remodelled.
The church had been built in an
L-shape and this was to be
changed. As the workers were
tearing out one of the walls a
spectator asked one of the men
what they were doing. The work-
man, an old Devonshire gen-
tleman replied in his usual
dialect, "We're knocking the h'ell
out of the church,"
The scripture was read by Rev.
Wright from a Bible which dated
back to 1880.
After the service, lunch was
served to about 500 people who
stayed to renew old aquain-
tances, An elderly couple from
Rochester New York said it had
been an "unforgettable ex-
perience."

New traffic signs, using sym-

words, should be in use by
1975. Red still means stop, or
prohibition; yellow is still a
warning color.
