FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Good
day
This may be a short column with some sports fillers
thrown in to fill out the usual depth. The Centennial ac-
tivities have kept all members of the T-A editorial staff on
the run and regular chores have been neglected to a degree.
In addition we had the pleasure of a trip to London
Thursday to catch a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth and Prince
Philip during their short stay in the Forest City. A picture of
the Royal couple should be appearing elsewhere in this
issue.
The sports attractions during Exeter's Centennial
celebrations Monday were highly successful.
The highly enthusiastic sports fan was kept busy hop-
ping back and forth between three locations.
The fastball tournament sponsored by the Centennial
committee with the co-operation of the South Huron Fast-
ball Association attracted large crowds throughout the day,
The calibre of ball provided by all eight competing clubs
was the best ever seen on the local diamond.
The final contest between the London Berkshire Blazers
and Lambeth was a real thriller with neither team being
able to score through the first six innings. Berkshire pitcher
Ian Henderson ended things in the bottom of the seventh
with a blast over the left field fence. He was also named the
most valuable player of the day on his record of two pitching
wins and a pair of home runs.
Every player taking part in the tourney received a
Centennial crest provided by the local fastball group which
is headed by Ed Hearn. Cy Blommaert and Gerry Finnen.
Activity at the swimming pool was steady throughout
Monday. The highlight of the day was the appearance of a
synchronized swim team from Toronto.
Several hundred persons gathered at the pool to watch
the demonstration which featured Judy Nanos and Betty
Ann Brennand from the Leaside club. These two girls were
bronze medalists in recent Senior Provincials and
represented Ontario at the Canadian championships in
Halifax.
The minor soccer tourney at the high school grounds
produced excellent play by the youngsters involved.
After watching a couple of the games, we would be cer-
tain most of the boys had little trouble sleeping Monday
night. They expended a lot of energy on a hot day.
Not being a soccer expert, it seemed to us the field was
extremely long for the boys and most of the play took place
in the centre of the field without too many opportunities to
score.
At Lucan, another exciting fastball tournament ended
up Monday night. A total of 16 teams competed in the event
sponsored by the Lucan Irish Nine club.
During our busy schedule Monday trying to catch the
trophy presentations at the two ball tourneys and the soccer
final we arrived at Lucan as the teams were in the seventh
and what should have been the final inning.
The two teams in the final from Thamesford and Fullar-
ton must have known we were pressed for time as they
played flawless ball for the next three innings in a scoreless
game.
Thamesford came to the rescue with a run in the bottom
of the tenth and we were able to get the pictures taken and
`back to Exeter Community park for the last few innings of
the championship game here.
When we arrived back in Exeter we found the same
situation with neither team being able to score a run.
Back on track
The move by the Toronto Maple Leafs early this week in
acquiring the services of Eddie Shack should be popular
with Leaf fans.
Far from being the most sophisticated puck carrier
Shack has the ability to arouse a club to its top potential.
With the Pittsburgh Penguins last year Shack scored 25
goals, which is only 14 fewer than the total picked up by four
Maple Leafs at the same position.
Shack should help get the Leafs back on some
semblance of the right track. A new coach is expected to be
announced this week. Our guess will be former captain
George Armstrong.
SWIM PRESENTATIONS — A feature of Monday's activities at Ex-
eter's Centennial was a demonstration of synchronized swimming by a
