the theme "Many Devices." He
said man tends to follow his own
devices rather than the counsel of
God. Because man has followed
his own deviceswe have produced
a generation of liberated minds,
ie addicts, boasters, fornicators,
disobeyers of parents and the
like.
Mr. Carson went on to point out
that this situation has developed
through a gradual drifting away
from Biblical principles. The
laws relating to abortion, homo-

have been relaxed.
There is agitation to have
Sunday observance laws
repealled and to make drug use
legal such as the smoking of

Shows concern
over advertising
Rev. Austin Gedcke of the
Pentecostal Tabernacle this
week expressed "deep concern
and disappointment" over the
Exeter centennial committee's
decision to accept the Labatt's
proposal for promoting cen-
tennial activities.
The brewery has provided the
committee with a free street
banner and free posters. In ad-
dition, they will be bringing their
giant balloon to the event as well
as entering a float in the parade.
In a letter to council this week,
Rev. Gedcke said the deal
arranged with Labatt's "leaves a
very bad taste among Exeterites
and could well be construed as
being a sell out to the people".
He suggested the centennial
advertising would contribute to
the alcohol problem.
"The day we sell our virtues
and integrity and moral purpose
to the highest bidder, I trust, will
never come for the sake of Exeter
as a town, for the sake of con-
cerned citizens, and for the sake
of our children who are largely
influenced by what their elders
do," he added.
The letter resulted in a short
debate at council, with approval
given to a suggestion by Coun-
cillor Bruce Shaw that the letter
be answered.
Shaw pointed out that some
people appear to be confused
about the arrangement. "We
didn't sell anything out," he
noted. He said the centennial
committee, of which he is a
member, granted a monopoly to
Labatt's to sell their products at
bars at the centennial. There is
no cash consideration and the
beer will be purchased through
the Brewers' Warehouse store.
"We're not forcing anyone to
drink . . or to drink more,"
commented Councillor Ben
Hoogenboom, another member of
the committee.
He said he had received
complaints from one resident and
asked that person if he had en-
joyed watching the Canada-
Russia hockey series. Hoogen-
boom was given an affirmative
answer and then pointed out it
had been brought to TV viewers
by Labatt's.
"No matter who sponsors
anything, we'd still get
criticized," claimed Councillor
Tom MacMillan, also a member
of the centennial committee.
Mayor Jack Delbridge said he
didn't think the posters would
encourage anyone to drink more
beer,
No matter how well your
children swim, keep them in sight
at all times. Your supervision
never hurts, but lacking your
supervision children may get
hurt. You and your family will
have more fun if you respect the
water. Stay alive with Red Cross
water safety all summer long.
