CONSUMER STUDIES: (341)
The aims of this course are to acquaint the student with a
knowledge of business operations and their effects upon the
consumer; to facilitate and improve consumer judgment in the
market and to provide basic knowledge of our market economy.
This is a general course designed to give the student a basis for
making intelligent decisions as a rational consumer.

8. CHILDREN'S THEATRE: (Grades VI-X)
This programme is designed to enable students to develop
their ability in speaking and acting. This will be
accomplished by the development of oral communication,
sharing of experiences and dramatization. Emphasis will be
on spontaneity. There will be a variety of experiences
offered to encourage growth in expression suited for
individual needs and the interests of students within this age
range. (4 weeks).

In the Mathematics and Reading Classes emphasis will be upon
review and helping the student to concentrate on areas of
weakness.
PEOPLE AND POLITICS (441): 9. COMPUTER PROGRAMMING:
GRADE 8: Basic Methods of Programming: The I.B.M, LSO Computer
using fortran IV and or S.W. Languages. Four weeks of
actual hands-on experience. (4 weeks). Type B upgrading courses will be offered in English and
Mathematics for students who have not been successful in these
areas. The courses will he given at Alexander Mackenzie July 2 -
27, two hours per day, if enrolment is sufficient.
SESSIONS AT
This course involves the local, national and international scene.
Concepts such as Leadership, the Individual and Government,
Decision-making, Morality in Politics, War, Near-War,
Revolution, and Political Systems, will be covered using such
examples as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Arab-Israeli Conflict,
the Irish Conflict, Quebec Separatism, and other issues currently
appearing in the news. This should help the student to acquire a
better understanding of the contemporary world, based on an
understanding of the past, with a view towards the future.
SECONDARY SCHOOLS
10. DRAMATIC OR THEATRE ARTS:-
Aimed at discovering the creative potential of young people.
Considerable time will be given to group improvisation.
Classes will be geared to a workshop performance; at which
time individual interests (acting, set design construction,
make-up, etc) will be given special consideration, (4
weeks).

11. DRIVER EDUCATION:
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
This will be the same popular course as offered through the
year. Students will get 6 hours in the car and 25 hours
classroom instruction (as per Department of Transport
Regulations). The cost of the course will be $35.00 per
student but is easily offset in insurance savings. (Hours by
arrangement),

TYPE "B" COURSES;
Up-grading or make-up courses for credit
Students: Secondary school students who are taking either
general or advanced level subjects and grade eight students who
wish up-grading in any subjects they have taken in the regular
school year. A maximum of two subjects can be taken,
Registration: Students are to register at Alexander Mackenzie
Secondary School June 29 and June 30 between the hours of 10:00
a.m. and 3:00 p.m. After Saturday, June 30, a late registration fee
of $5.00 may be charged.
TYPE "A" COURSES: Intensive Study For Credit
Students: Any Secondary School Student or adult
Length: July 2 - Aug. 10, 8:30-12:30 a.m. (4 hours daily)
Registration: Students are to register at their own secondary
school before June 22. Adults may register at any secondary
school, The student is advised to seek guidance at his own school
prior to registration.
Late registrations could be accepted at Alexander Mackenzie
June 29 and June 30 but some classes may be filled.
The Type "A" courses should be of interest to students with
timetable limitations, or as enrichment to their regular
programme. Several courses will be offered which are not
available at each school. Length: 2 hours per day, per course for 6 weeks - July 3 to
August t1. 12. DROWNPROOFING:
Subjects: A class will be offered in any subject in which there is
sufficient demand grades 8 through 13.
Gain confidence in your ability to save your life. This two
week course will provide instruction in water safety,
drownproofing and basic swim instruction, The indoor pool
at Sarnia Collegiate Institute and Technical School
(S.C.I.T.S,) will be used. A class will be offered in any subject in which there is sufficient
demand,

13. ELECTRICITY FOR THE NOVICE: (girls are welcome)
Here is a practical course aimed at the person who is always
saying "I could have done that myself and save some money
too". It focuses on household and automotive troubleshoot-
ing and repair. (2 weeks).
TYPE "C" COURSES: Interest Courses: Non-credit
Students: Any grade 6 to grade 13 student and any adults who
wish to attend.

14. FIBRES:
This three week course will include individual instruction in
spinning and weaving, quilting, embroidery, crochet,
knitting, dyes and batik.
Length: Generally two hours per day for three or four weeks.
NOTE THE EXCEPTIONS: Courses marked with as asterisk are
repeated if demand is sufficient. Courses start July 2.

TITLES:
SECONDARY STUDENTS:
Vigorous physical activities for young men which will get
you and keep you in shape. Activities will include warm-up
and conditioning, instruction in competition in both team
and individual sports and specialization in activities of your
choice, Facilities include an air-conditioned gym, a
universal weight machine and excellent out-door areas. This
will be a demanding but rewarding experience for young
men (4 weeks),
Students from Secondary Schools may take any TYPE A or
TYPE C Courses. In addition, upgrading courses will be provided
in any subject in which there is sufficient registration, Consult
your Guidance Department to make certain TYPE A or TYPE B
courses will be acceptable in your programme.

Parents are responsible for the transportation of their children.
A materials fee of $5.00 will be charged. Registration for these
courses may be done at any Elementary school or by mail directly
to MR. J. EDGAR, Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School, 1257
Michigan Avenue, SARNIA, Ont. The following courses will be
offered from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., July 2 - July 27,
16, GARDEN AND LAWN MAINTENANCE:
This course is mainly designed for the practical aspects of
garden and lawn care. Some of the topics that will be
discussed are Control of garden pests, planting and care of
evergreens, vegetables for the garden and summer care of
roses. This is a course for the young and old. (3 weeks).
1. ART: Would you like to experiment with a wide range of
materials? Have you ever tried making batiks, colages,
paper sculptures, mobiles, posters, print making or chance
techniques with paint? Would you like to learn the
techniques used in line drawings, shaded drawings, pen and
ink sketches or paintings? If any of the above ways of
expressing yourself has stimulated your interest then enroll
now in the Art Course. (3 weeks) (Repeated)
2. AUTO SERVICING: Here is another practical "money-sa-
ving" course. A three-week course for beginners looking at
what makes the family car run. Some of the areas that will
be covered are grease jobs, oil changes, tire changes, tire
repair, minor tune-up, car wash and car waxing (3 weeks). CANADIAN LITERATURE (551):
The objectives of this course are to expand the student's
awareness of Canadian Literature and to relate to the student the
historical development of Canadian Literature, Poetry, essays
and short stories will be studied,
MAN AND SOCIETY (351 or 341):
Topics such as crime and punishment, juvenile delinquency, the
family, the educational system, the city and propaganda will be studied.
The course is open to both phase 4 and phase 5 students.
3, BASKETBALL: This four week course will include both
instructional and recreational time. The course will be given
in the evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
If registration allows, age groupings will be from 12-14, 14-16
and seniors, Come out and enjoy this fun activity.
17. GOLF FUNDAMENTALS:
This course in basic golf fundamentals will be offered both
in the morning (Monday to Friday) and evening (Tuesday
and Thursday) during the month of July. Expert individual
teaching will be available, Adults are most welcome.

URBAN GEOGRAPHY (351):
4. BOOKKEEPING - BEGINNERS:
Not really sure of where money goes,? Would you like to keep
track of it? Try this four week course and learn the basics of
bookkeeping (4 weeks).
PRE-SCHOOLERS: Since 1095 the world's people have become, and are still
becoming, more and more urbanized, The purpose of this course
is to discover why this phenomenon has occurred, where it has
occurred, and how it relates to people and the quality of their
lives, Open to all mature students but it is recommended that they
be at least in 'Year 3.
16. GOURMET COOKING: ADVANCED
This year this ever popular course will be offered at two
levels, The advanced course should be taker] by people who
have previously attended or young ladies already familiar
with the kitchen, This course is designed for those who
really want to cook. (2 weeks) (repeated)
This programme is intended for children who are four or five
years, old and who will attend Kindergarten in September 1973 or
1979. The child will be exposed to a variety of activities to develop
positive attitudes towards education and towards life itself.
5. BICYCLE: - Ten-Speed
If you own a bicycle - (ten-speed or otherwise) - you will
enjoy this two-week course. Emphasis will be placed on
kinds of bicycles, general maintenance, safety and the
operation of a bicycle, 19, GOURMET COOKING: BEGINNERS
CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES:
First course for those who would like to learn how to cook
those exotic meals. (2 weeks) (repeated).
CLASSICAL CIVILIZATIONS (151 or 251):
The great influence of the past upon our lives will be
investigated. By studies in archaeology, literature and art, this
course will reconstruct the customs, values and achievements of
the past as it happened around the Mediterranean. Unstructured activities for primary aged children (5 yrs -
yrs). The activities would include: art, music, crafts, reading,
puppets, games and plays. Learning as individuals, the students
would be able to participate in activities of their choice within an
open concept of rooms.
6. CARE DECORATING AND SUGARCRAFT:
This is a fun course providing the foundation for an
interesting and artistic hobby, Learn the skills which will
enable you to create beautiful cakes, This course will
familiarize you with: The fundamentals of design and
lay-out; the techniques, for decorating rakes, creation Of
sugar flowers and novelty designs. (3 weeks).
20. HAIRSTYLING:
Two weeks in our air-conditioned studio will do wonders for
you and your hair (2 weeks) (repeated),
