songs specially written for
Exeter's centennial.
The primary grades borrowed
Bobby Gimby's "Canada" and
revised the words slightly to have
it become an Exeter song.
Carolyn Perry, a grade eight
student, provided the lyrics for
"Centennial Song" to the tune of
"Little Brown Jug".
Her lyrics were chosen from a
contest for a centennial song held
in grades seven and eight at the
school,
One of the most popular songs
with the pupils was "UP with
People", introduced by Miss K.
Beatty, music teacher at EPS.
"We would like to suggest that
the theme should well become the
way of life in Exeter for the next
century of so," commented EPS
principal James Chapman.
The words of the aforemen-
tioned songs are as follows:
CENTENNIAL SONG
Lyrics by Carolyn Perry
TUNE: LITTLE BROWN JUG
Once upon a century ago,
A man named Willis got in the
know.
He packed his wagon, he packed
his wife
And he headed our way for a
great new life.
Chorus
Exeter, Exeter
A jolly old place called Exeter.
Exeter, Exeter,
Oh how we love you Exeter,
He built a cabin and he settled
down
And he grew the best crops for
miles around.
Folks all came from far and wide
To make more clearings side by
side.

Students at Exeter Public
School were in full swing for
Exeter's centennial year when
they performed their recent
concerts.
The program was split into a
senior and junior program on
succeeding weeks and each was
attended by over 550 people at the
SHDHS auditorium,
The junior program, entitled
"Memories" took the audience
back through the ages in songs
and skits depicting preschool,
school life, recess, war years,
courting days and adulthood.
Narrators for some of the
features were Bruce Shaw, Holly
Wildfong and Maureen Gans.
All pupils participated.
The senior program was
"Those Were the Days," again
taking the audience back through
the years.
Highlights of the program were
UP WITH PEOPLE
It happened just this morning, I
was walking down the street,
The milkman and the postman
and policeman I did meet.
There in ev'ry window and ev'ry
single door,
I recognized people I'd never
noticed before.
Chorus
Up, Up with people! You meet
'em wherever you go.
Up! Up with people! They're the
best kind of folks we know.
If more people were for people,
All people ev'rywhere
There'd be a lot less people to
worry about, and a lot more
people to care
There'd be a lot less people to
worry about, and a lot more
people to care
People from the southland and
people from the north,
Like a mighty army I saw
them coming forth.
"Twas a great reunion, befitting
of a king!
Then I realized people were more
important than things.
Inside ev'rybody there's some
bad and there's some good,
But don't let anybody start at-
tacking peoplehood.
Love them as they are, but fight
for them to be
Great men and great women, as
God meant them to be.
Reading, writing and arithmetic
Is what makes little minds go
click.
A little red school house was built
to fit
Just this very requirement.
In 1800 and 70 years
The sound of train wheels met
their ears
The little train came thundering
through
As our little town's population
grew.
