FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS

Sharpshooters get share
of dart league awards.
Ready for
quarter horses
The eighth annual Mid-Western Quarter Horse show is
scheduled for Exeter Community Park Saturday June 9 and
it promises to provide plenty of exciting entertainment for
the spectators,
A couple of new events have been added to the show
which is being sponsored by the Exeter Kinsmen club for
the third consecutive year, Members of the local service
club are showing their usual enthusiasm in planning an in-
teresting show.
A large number of trophies and ribbons have been
donated by Exeter and district merchants. The awards are
on show this week in the display window of H & K Sports
Centre, across from the Exeter Post Office.
The judge for the full day's show will be Dale Rose of
Mansfield, Ohio. Rose is an experienced judge but this will
be his first trip north of the border. Don Nye of Hamilton is
returning as arena director while Fred Darling will handle
the announcing duties.
Show secretary Noel Veri reports this is the second
largest quarter horse show in the province of Ontario and
entries are expected from all parts of Ontario as well as
many points in the United States. The local show has been
classed as an "A" event for many years with 225 entries or
more,
The new events on the program this year include barrel
racing and pole bending. The emphasis is put on the young
entrants with numerous youth activity classes.
The show will get underway at 8,30 in the morning with
the afternoon session scheduled for one o'clock featuring the
more exciting events as far as spectators are concerned
with barrel races, pole bending, reining, western pleasure
and trail classes.
The Ontario Quarter Horse Association has one of the
largest following of youth activity classes in Canada and the
Association which sanctions all shows of this kind insists on
various events restricted to youngsters.
As of 1972, there were more than 11,000 registered
quarter horses in Ontario, the second highest in the Domi-
nion of Canada.
The quarter horse had its beginning as a race horse. In
the 360 years since its origin, he has retained his ability to
beat horses of any other breed from a standing start up to
440 yards, or a quarter of a mile, taus establishing its name.
Good performance
If the opening game performance of the Exeter Expos is
any indication of what's to come, the local intermediate ball
club should be providing some interesting entertainment for
area fans.
In Dashwood Friday night, the Expos downed the
Dashwood Tigers 4-1 with young southpaw Larry Gibson
recording a grand total of 16 strike-outs in the seven inning
contest.
The Dashwood club in the midst of a rebuilding program
used a lot of youngsters in Friday's first game and will
definitely improve as the season moves along.
Tiger mentor Glenn Webb is taking a good look at a
group of Crediton youngsters. Graduates of the Crediton
minor ball program started about five years ago are begin-
ning to show their talents.
In addition to Larry Gibson, who made the pitching
start for the Exeter Expos in the first Huron-Perth contest
of the season, Rick Bowers, Pete Wuerth and Bill Hodge
were in the Dashwood line-up.
Sunday afternoon in an abbreviated game, the Exeter
Expo pitching again looked very sharp. In the first three in-
nings against Walkerton Sunday afternoon, Jim Pfaff fann-
ed eight opposing batters.
These early season performances seem to indicate the
pitchers are well ahead of the batters. This is probably due
to the wet weather which allowed most teams to have only
one practice before the season started.
Help urgently needed
Participation in the Exeter Minor Baseball Association
is greater than ever this year and manpower in a couple of
categories is badly needed.
Four local teams are entered in the Western Ontario
Athletic Association in the pee wee, bantam, midget and
juvenile divisions.
Exeter minor ball convenor Bill Dougherty reports he
needs volunteers for umpiring for the home games of the
local teams.
We shouldn't actually say volunteer as Bill says his
group will be able to pay a fair fee for umpires handling the
games.
An umpiring clinic held at the Exeter arena Sunday
night drew about 15 prospective umpires but only three were
from town. If anyone wishes to work as an umpire give Bill
Dougherty a call at 235-0248. He will be happy to hear from
you.
The other call for help comes from pee wee baseball
coach Rob Grant. He has had about 50 players out for prac-
tice for the pee wee club and can only use 15 to 20 of the
youngsters at the very most.
If coaching help can be obtained several teams could be
organized to play as a house league. The boys want to play
ball, all they need is someone to supervise. Again, volunteers
can get in touch with either Rob Grant or Bill Dougherty.
Grapplers in town
An all-star professional wrestling card goes tonight,
Thursday at the Exeter arena, Featured will be a tag team
match and the appearance of a couple of midgets in the per-
sons of Sky Lo Lo and Pee Wee James.
