"Bringing up a mentally
retarded child makes a person
much more patient, open and
appreciative of normalcy," said
Dr. Gordon MacWillie when he
spoke at the final general spring
meeting of the South Huron.
Association for the Mentally
Retarded last week.
Dr. MacWillie, who is a Doctor
of Philosophy, Prof. of
Psychology, minister of the
Presbyterian Church and teacher
at King's College, UWO, spoke on
the meaning of mental retar-
dation. lie is also the father of a
mentally retarded daughter.
He added that to be realistic,
however, one must admit that it
is sometimes a "real pain"
raising a retarded child. He said
it is sometimes "tiresome,
frustrating and a burden",
because one is so limited in what
one can do,
One question that is frequently
asked concerns the meaning of
mental retardation, said Dr.
MacWillie, but the most
significant questions of the
parents do not necessarily
concern the cause.
More often he said, they are
questions like, "Why my baby?",
"Why to me?" and more often
just "Why?"
"A chromosome defect"is not a
sufficient answer, he said.
He has theorized that there are
four basic ways of accounting for
mental retardation. The first is
causal. He explained this in
terms of a mathematical for-
mula: if A (the causes of mental
retardation) precedes B (the
retardation itself) and B always
follows A, then mental retar-
dation is inevitable, It is a
question of man's quest for
control over his environment,
He added here that a retardate
gives a very special gift to a
supposedly intellectual person by
defining his intellect. "If there
were only two classes of people,
superior and inferior intellects,
most would fall into the latter
category", said Dr. MacWillie.
The second method of ac-
counting for mental retardation
is a meaning made because
people can classify a group of
people as retarded.
We must avoid this
stereotyping, however, urged Dr.
MacWillie, "There isn't one in-
telligence. There are in-
telligences. No two things in this
world are alike and like
everyone, each child who is
retarded must be accepted with
his own faults and values".
He described the third meaning
of mental retardation as
"existential" or the relationship
between an individual and his
experience.
"We like to think of uses for
things," he said, but went on to
explain that we have lost the
sense of being able to appreciate
things for themselves.
"Part of the meaning of mental
retardation can only be found if
we relate directly to a mentally
retarded person in an 'I-thou'
relationship," he continued. "We
must experience him or her as a
person, not as a duty or someone
to be entertained, but as a per-
son".
The fourth meaning of mental
retardation, the value meaning
can spring from that type of
experience, he said.
A mentally retarded person is
not valued very highly in our
society in terms of usefulness.
They are generally thought of as
a cost, a deficit to society.
"But in the grand scheme of
things, intelligence is not as
great a thing as we might ex-
pect," said Dr. MacWillie.
"The capacity to express
emotions is equally important".
We have over-emphasized the
importance of intelligence," he
said.
"The mentally retarded can
laugh, cry, tease, and enjoy life.
They have love and emotional
