Only 15 seconds remained in the first period when Jamie Robb stole the puck at the Stratford blue-line and romped in alone to draw Beer to one side and flip the puck into the net. The first half of the second period continued the same back and forth rushing with first one club and then the other missing good chances, In the first two minutes, Dave Revington was robbed by Rod Beer from in close and then Marty Schmidt of Stratford was unable to control a loose puck in front of the L-1 net with Daer well out of position. Near the five minute mark, the Jets put on tremendous pressure around the Stratford net. Terry Bourne, Dick Doughty, Barry Baynham and Steve Proctors all had swipes at the puck during a wild scramble but were unable to connect. The Jets took a 2-0 lead at 9.22 when Jack Nairn took a pass from the corner from Pete Loveless and fired a shot along the ice from about 20 feet out. Captain Doug Galloway also assisted on the play. The only Stratford goal of the entire contest came at 5.42 of the second half of the middle frame from a wild melee around the Jets net. The goal was credited to John Hall as the puck hit his skate and went into the net, At the end of the second period, the Perths led in shots on goal by a score of 19-16. Same pattern The third period started off in the same way as the other two with exciting action. Stratford came out quickly in an attempt to get back on even terms and Lorne Daer was forced to make a good stop on John St. Cyr as he sped in alone from the blue-line on a long clearing pass. Jim Betts of Stratford was sent off for tripping at 43 seconds. The Jets power play failed to work and then the manpower ad- vantage was quickly reversed. In short order, the Jets were called for too many men on the ice during a player change on the fly and Bill Dunnell was nailed for tripping. When Dunnell protested loudly to referee Frank Slota he was ejected with a game misconduct. Only seconds after, the Perths took a two man advantage, Jamie Robb was able to break loose but Rod Beer again foiled the high flying Robb. The Stratford club was unable to make much of the two man advantage due mainly to the fine penalty killing of Steve Proctor, Pete Loveless, Barry Baynham Pee wees lose in final The 1972-73 hockey season came to a close Saturday af- ternoon for the Ilderton pee wees. Marmora downed the Ilderton Lions 6-3 to win the seventh and deciding game of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Pee Wee "D" final and take the provincial championship. After being down three games to one, the Ilderton club came back with a double victory a week earlier to force the seventh game. The prolific goal scoring of Jeff Marshall and tremendous goal lending of Scott McNair kept the Ilderton club in the running for two periods. Marshall scored all three Ilderton goals, His second goal of the afternoon came late in the second period and was ac- complished on a good shot from the left side. The Marmora goalie left only about six inches open by the post and Marshall hit the opening perfectly. The third and final Ilderton goal came in the last two minutes of play when coach Scott McNair pulled the goalie who was his son Scott in favour of an extra for- ward. Before Marmora broke the game open with three goals early in the third period, it was McNair's excellent puck stopping which kept the score close. OMIIA executive member Stan Stokes of London was on hand to present trophies to the captains of both clubs. Hewitt trophy was presented Friday night to the Lucan- Ilderton Jets as Ontario Hockey Association Senior "B" champions. Shown above with the trophy are Jets captain Doug Galloway, playing coach Jack Nairn and OHA representative Hugh McLean of London. ar Pao. G Times-Advocate, April 26, 1973 FOR ALL POOP SPORTS By Ross Haugh Hockey is over Except for Stanley Cup playoffs on television, hockey watching in this area is over for another year. One of the most successful seasons in many years in the district has come to a close. When we say successful, we mean it not only in the amount of championships won by area hockey teams but the total number of hockey players of all ages who were able to participate in our national sport. The 1972-73 hockey season has to be a memorable one. For a starter the Soviet Union and Canada series is one which will be remembered for a long time to come. If another such series is organized it can never hope to match the first one in excitement, tension and any other word one would choose to use. The highlight of the hockey season in Exeter was the all- Ontario championship brought home by the Exeter Legion Auxiliary pee wee club. This is the first time an OMHA title has come to Exeter. If most of the youngsters on this club stay together through the balance of their minor hockey careers, we can - expect some more championships. Over the week-end, we happened to come across a program from the Brampton Lions novice tournament of two years ago. Thirteen players on the 1970-71 Exeter novice club participating at Brampton were on this year's winning pee wee club. This is a good indication most of the youngsters are sticking with their hockey careers. The district's newest arena also completed its first hockey season Saturday and this was a very successful operation. The Ilderton arena opened in the fall hosted three On- tario hockey finals and was rewarded with one cham- pionship, although the big win didn't come on home ice. Friday night, the Lucan-Ilderton Jets won the Ontario Hockey Association Senior "B" championship with a four game sweep of the final series with the Stratford Perths. The trophy won by the Jets Friday night has been out of circulation for more than 10 years. It's the W.A. Hewitt Memorial trophy. The last time this trophy was up for grabs was in the 1959-60 season when the winners were the Strathroy Rockets. When we said the season was over for the Ilderton arena that's for hockey only. A spring figure skating school is now in progress until late May and another one takes over later in the summer. While the Jets won the senior championship, two of Ilderton's minor clubs also put up a good show. The Ilderton pee wees took Marmora to the seventh and final game before bowing Saturday for the Ontario "D" crown. We were able to catch the last half of Saturday's pee wee game in Ilderton and the home club is to be con- gratulated on an excellent performance. The fellow who kept the Ilderton club in the final game was goalie Scotty McNair. The way young Scotty performed Sunday we would think the Jets shouldn't have any goal tending problems in six or seven years. t Goal tending was the big plus for the Jets as they wound the season up in Stratford Friday night. Lorne Daer in the Jets net was at his best in keeping the Stratford sharpshooters at bay. The only goal scored on Daer was rather controversial with the puck going into the net off a Stratford player's skate. Daer's performance was extraordinary due to the fact about six lights at the east end of the rink were not operating. In an attempt to be fair to both clubs, the game was actually split into six 10 minute periods. The clubs changed ends at the midway mark of each period. Just before the game started we were down at rinkside talking to OHA convenor Hugh McLean and refe Just before the game started we were down at rinkside talking to OHA convener Hugh McLean and referee Frank Slota. A Stratford player came skating along and said jokingly to Slota. "We're not concerned about the goalies seeing the puck, you are the one we will worry about." Our congratulations go to manager Don Urbshott, coach Jack Nairn and all members of the Jets in winning the Senior "B" title. Four valuable members of the cham- pionship club are from Exeter. They are Bill Fairbairn, Barry Baynham and Terry and Bill Bourne. The latter saw little action in the final game as he was injured in pre-game practices. Baseball meeting Everyone interested in minor baseball in Exeter for the coming summer season is asked to attend a meeting next Monday night, April 30. The meeting will start at 7.30 p.m. in the upstairs of the town hall. Coaches and managers are needed for all categories of minor baseball. If you are interested but can't attend Monday's meeting get in touch with Doug Gould so the organization can be planned. Planning soccer Boys wishing to compete in the various divisions of the Exeter Centennial soccer club are reminded of registration sessions the next two Saturday mornings. All boys from Exeter and all surrounding towns and villages are welcome to participate. Proof of birth should be brought along. Registration will be at 10 a.m. in room 111 at South Huron District High School. Villages planning, too The police villages of Dashwood and Crediton are also making plans for the minor baseball season. The two villages are combining some of their baseball talents. While Dashwood and Crediton will each have their own novice and pee wee ball clubs they are combining their ef- forts for bantam and midget. Further information will be found in another story on these sports pages this week. Not the first time While the Philadelphia Flyers are classed as an expan- sion club in the National Hockey league it is not the first time The City of Brotherly Love has been represented in professional hockey. The Philadelphia Quakers were in the NHL during the 1930-81 season. The Quakers were able to win only four games during the regular 44 games schedule and folded before the next season rolled around. A pi -f -difiising rookie A star forward with the Mitchell Hawks a few years ago has been named the rookie of the year in the International hockey league, He is Danny Gloor who scored 42 goals with the Des Moines Caps. The W.A. Hewitt Memorial trophy will rest with the Lucan- Ilderton Jets for the next twelve months. The Hewitt trophy emblematic of the Ontario Hockey Association Senior "B" cham- pionship has not been up for grabs for more than a dozen years. With the formation last fall of a new Senior "B" league in Western Ontario the trophy was brought out of moth balls. The last time it was competed for was in 1959-60 when the Strathroy Rockets were named provincial Senior "B" champions. Friday night at the Classic City arena in Stratford, the Lucan- Ilderton Jets scored a 5-1 win over the Stratford Perths to take the final series in four straight games. Captain Doug Galloway and playing coach Jack Nairn received the large-size trophy from OHA executive member Hugh McLean of London. The Jets are now the first champions of the newly formed Senior "B" grouping, Other clubs which competed in the new league in addition to the L-I club and Stratford were the London Kings, Durham Huskies, Preston Jesters, Bothwell Barons and Woodstock Royals. Even start Friday's final contest in Stratford was fairly evenly matched for the first two periods. The outcome was in doubt until the Jets took a two goal lead at 3-1 near the seven minute mark of the third period. For the first two periods, the two goal tenders were the stars of the game as the Jets held a slim 2-1 lead at that time. The game was split into six periods of ten minutes each due to a failure of some of the lights at the east end of the arena. During the first ten minute period, Lorne Daer in the Lucan- Ilderton nets was kept busy. Before the first minute had elapsed, Daer was forced to make an excellent stop from close in on Bob Zimmer. Near the five minute mark, defenceman Bill Dunnell staved off a good Stratford scoring threat by sliding in front of a shot and a minute later, Daer came flying out of the net to pounce on a loose puck. The Jets first good scoring chance came at the nine minute mark when Jamie Robb hit the goal post after taking a good pass from Barry Baynham and getting into the clear. Each team missed good scoring opportunities in the early moments of the second half of the first period. Jamie Robb sent Bill Fairbairn away in the clear and the Exeter youngster barely missed the left side of the net. It was right back to the other end of the ice and Daer was called on again to stop St. Cyr from point blank range. On the next rush Dick Doughty had a good shot at the net and Strat- ford's netminder Rod Beer rose A JETS STAR - One of the main reasons for the Lucan-Ilderton Jets four game sweep of the OHA Senior "B" final with the Stratford Perths was the outstanding per- formance of goalie Lorne Doer, He is shown above shortly after Friday's 5.1 win at Stratford. T-A photo Anyone Interested in playing fastball for the Albatross Tavern Fastball Team, please attend opening practice at 2 p.m. Sat., April 28 NOON PARK DIAMOND Oust Stratford in straight games and Jack Nairn. At 7.01 of the period, Dick Doughty scored a beautiful goal as he was allowed to get loose from the blue-line in, Doughty put a good deke on goalie Beer and put the puck into the net with a high backhand shot. As time in the first half of the third period was running out Barry Baynham snuffed out a good Stratford scoring thrust by falling on the puck near his net to take off the pressure. The second half of the final frame was only 11 seconds old when the Jets margin rose to 4-1. Dick Doughty broke free and as moved in on goal slid a perfect pass across to Terry Bourne and the puck was in the net. Tom Hodgins also assisted. The final goal of the game came with less than two minutes remaining when Dave Revington chopped at a loose puck in front of the Stratford net and it bounced in. Attendance at the final game was 1,365. First trophy presentation since 1960 0 rE3' title
