Hockey tournaments in Western Ontario continue to be very plentiful and take up most of the school holiday, The Exeter teams in the extra events this year may be reduced slightly this year due to participation in Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoffs, The pee wee and bantam clubs have decided not to par- take of the extra tournaments as they are both engaged in fourth rounds of provincial play, The Exeter Broncos will be travelling to Brampton Monday to take part in the 14th annual novice hockey tour- nament being staged in two arenas in Brampton. The Broncos guided by Wayne Pearce and Steve Murley will be meeting either Kincardine or Waterford in the first set of two games total goals to count. The games will be played Monday at 8 a.m. at the Roselea arena and 2 p.m. at the Memorial arena, If successful in the first round, the Broncos will be back in action Thursday at 2 p.m, and Friday morning at 8 a.m. The opposition will come from Beaverton, Delhi, Bolton or Elora, The Exeter midgets will be competing in a Wingham tournament and will see their first action on Tuesday, March 20. The Exeter Waxers, the youngest of local minor teams will be taking part in two tourneys. They will be in Listowel on Thursday, March 22 and in Dorchester, the following Saturday, March 24. The Lake Huron zone of Recreation directors is again sponsoring four minor class tournaments. These events are limited to house league players not signed to organized league certificates. The pee wee tourney will be held at the Exeter arena and arena manager Alvin Willert told us Monday he expects two days will be needed to take care of all of the interested teams. As of Monday morning he had received a total of 16 entries. The games will now be spread over Wednesday and Thursday, March 21 and 22. The novice tourney will be held at Kindardine, Satur- day, March 17 and the bantam event at St. Marys, March 22. Exeter clubs are entered in both. The Waxers are not eligi- ble for this type of tournament because they are the only club of this age class in Exeter and are not defined as house league calibre. Three area teams are entered in the 24th annual Young Canada pee wee tournament in Goderich. They are Hensall, Zurich and Ilderton. Friday night in the opening game at 6.40 p.m. Ilderton meets Teeswater while Saturday morning, Hensall faces Ripley at 8.10 and Zurich meets Atwood at 9.20, all in the "D" classification. Still going The Exeter pee wees and bantams are still in contention for OMHA, ch4mpionships. The pee wees are in a little better position with a win in the first game of the fourth round while the bantams were on the short end of the score in their first contest in the same round. The Legion Auxiliary pee wees dished up a tremendous brand of hockey in blanking Niagara-on-the-Lake 8-0 Satur- day afternoon and will be favorites to wind up the series when they go back to the Niagara area this Saturday after- noon. We expect the pee wees to bring home a win but the game will probably be a lot closer this time. The locals were up for this game and were superior in every department and along with this got some good bounces. One of the bounces referred to in the last paragraph came in the first period Saturday when Randy Fisher let a booming slap shot go from the Niagara blue-line. Before anyone could blink an eye the puck hit the goal posts three times and dropped right on the goal line. Before the op- posing goalie could recover Steve Skinner was johnny-on- the-spot to bang the puck into the net. If the youngsters can continue to come up with this brand of hockey they will go a long way toward the provin- cial championship. Another plus in the pee wee series is the fact, Exeter manager Bev Skinner won the toss for a third game if it is necessary. The same thing happened in the bantam series, but the local club sponsored by the Exeter Legion will need the third game on home ice if they hope to continue in the run- ning. After losing a tough 5-4 decision in Beamsville Sunday, the locals now have the advantage of the next two games at the Exeter arena. A wide open race The number of candidates for this year's Calder Memorial trophy in the National Hockey league is probably the largest in the history of Clarence Campbell's loop. At least ten players have a chance in being named the rookie of the year with every team in the league having at least one candidate, In most cases, the poorer the team's performance, the higher the number of eligible rookies. In our books three players have the inside track on the award, They are Steve Vickers of the New York Rangers, Dan Bouchard of the Atlanta Flames and Buffalo's Jim Schoenfeld. We will pick Vickers for the trophy mainly because he is a forward while the other two are a defenceman and a goalie, Only three defencemen have ever been named and goalies are sometimes victimized by the team in front of them. A rare sight During this season and last since the third man in a fight rule has been in existence in the National Hockey league, fisticuffs are faily scarce, The sight of two goalies taking pokes at each other rare- ly can be seen but it did at Madison Square Gardens a couple of weeks ago. Ed Giacomin of the Rangers and Cesare Maniago of the Minnesota North Stars got into a ruckus. The incident started when Giacomin raced out, of his net to take on Bill Goldsworthy. When Maniago saw his team-mate sort of outnumbered he said he had to get into the act to even things up. Both goalies received double minors for leaving their goals. HOCKEY QUIZ Answers: Maple Leaf Gardens in 'Toronto, dubbed 'the house that Smythe built" was officially opened on November 12, 1931 and the first Toronto goal in the game was scored by Charlie Conacher. The Chicago Black Hawks eventually won the game 3-2. The Exeter Hawks currently find themselves in trouble as far as the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" western group playoff finals are con- cerned. After disposing of the Clinton Mustangs in a close seven game series, the Hawks are two games down to the Mitchell Hawks in the best-of-seven final for the league championship, which they are trying to win for the third straight year. In the series opener Sunday afternoon at the Exeter arena, Mitchell doubled the score 8-4 on the Exeter Hawks. Back in Mitchell, Tuesday night, the Hawks from the Perth County The Exeter Legion bantams will be on home ice at the Exeter arena Saturday evening at six o'clock in an attempt to get back in the running in the fourth round of play in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Bantam "B" playoffs. Sunday afternoon, the local bantams were unable to hang onto an early lead and they dropped a 5-4 decision to Beamsville in the first game of a best-of-three series. The Exeter club has one slight advantage in that they won the flip for a third game if one is necessary. It would be played on Exeter ice Sunday evening at six o'clock, Ausable teams near elimination Ailsa Craig and Brinsley took commanding leads in the semi- final playoff rounds of the Ausable Valley Rec hockey league, Sunday night, Ailsa Craig edged Brinsley 5-4 and Lieury got past the Shipka Bulldogs by the same 5-4 score to take two game margins in best- of-five sets. The third games in each series will be played Sunday night at the Exeter arena and Brinsley and Shipka face elimination. Brian Ropp scored two goals to pace the Lieury win over Shipka. Adding single goals were Lewis Slater, Bob Robinson and Marty Steeper. Reid Burley was the top Shipka marksman with a three goal performance while Rene Boogemans chipped in with a single goal. Bob Donaldson with a pair of successful shots was the top scorer for Ailsa Craig. Checking in with one goal each were Dave Collins, Gwen Griffith and Don McAlpine. Bob Hudgins with a two goal effort was best for Brinsley while single goals were notched by George Tryon and Jim Latta. town scored five goals in the third period to post a decisive 11-4 win. The third game of the series was played in Exeter last night, Wednesday and the fourth is slated for Mitchell Friday night. A fifth game if necessary will be back in Exeter Sunday afternoon at two o'clock and a sixth in Mitchell Tuesday night, Date of a seventh game was not definite at press time. Two big periods The Mitchell club scored five big goals in the first period Tuesday night to take a com- manding 5-1. The Exeter Hawks battled back slightly in the middle frame to cut the Mitchell margin to two In Beamsville Sunday, the Exeter youngsters took a 2-1 lead after the first period of play and extended the margin to 3-1 with the only score of the second period. Beamsville outscored the locals 4-1 in the final session to gain the win. The first goal of the game was fired by Tom Hayter on a pass from John Van Gerwen. After Miles Furneal tied the count for Beamsville Ken Pinder com- pleted a three-way effort with Paul Shapton and Howard Schenk to put•Exeter in front 2-1. The only marker of the second was chalked up by Tom Hayter on an unassisted score. The final goal for Exeter in the third session was notched by Ken Pinder with the assist going to Phil Knight. Beamsville scored four times in the third with Scott Walker's goal settling the issue with about five minutes to go. Then the hometown Hawks went on another five goal splurge and the game was over, Pete Glover led the Hawks meagre attack with two goals while singles were fired by John Mommersteeg and Randy Tieman. Sunday afternoon before 827 fans at the Exeter arena, the visiting Hawks also struck early taking a 4-1 lead after the first twenty minutes of play and the locals were never able to catch up. The game was only 31 seconds old when Perry Stover took a pass from left winger Brian Bestard and beat Terry O'Krafka in the Mitchell nets. The Exeter lead didn't last long as Mitchell captain Art Strohm tied the score at 4.42 and before the period was over Bill Walt scored a pair of goals and Don Nicholson added a single. Exeter defenceman Rob Lindenfield making his first start of the season was in the penalty box when the first two Mitchell goals were scored. In the second period each team scored twice to maintain the Mitchell three goal margin. Stover notched his second of the game at the 29 second mark on a three-way effort with Brian Campbell and captain Jim Guenther. Pete Glover who was sidelined for a few minutes with an injury in the first period came back in the second to get the next Exeter goal. Assists were provided by John Mommersteeg and Kevin Bestard. The second period Mitchell goal getters were Jim Avery and Phil Chessel. In the third period, the scoring pattern took a reverse with Mitchell getting a goal from Chessell with only 50 seconds of playing time elapsed. The Hawks were able to get one back in short order as Glover again found the scoring range. He converted a pass from Perry Stover, who was the top Hawk point producer with three. The other Mitchell scorer in the last frame was Art Strohm. The .Exeter Legion Auxiliary pee wees turned in an excellent performance on home ice Saturday afternoon and recorded a decisive 8-0 win over Niagara- on-the-Lake. It was the first game of a best- of-three series in the fourth round of provincial play. The second game is scheduled for the Niagara team's home ice Saturday afternoon with a third game if it is necessary back in Exeter Sunday afternoon probably at twelve o'clock noon. The Exeter club disposed of St. Marys, South London and Delhi in early rounds of play. Three goals in less than four minutes midway through the first period put the Exeter youngsters well on the way to victory. The first Exeter goal came at 11.04 when Randy Parsons was left uncovered on the corner of the Niagara net and he tipped in passes from Dave Bogart and Randy Fisher. Only 30 seconds later Paul Pooley took a pass from Derek Regier near the Niagara blue-line and blasted a low shot right down the middle into the net. At 14.33 the score became 3-0 when Randy Fisher let go a terrific shot from the right point. The puck hit. the right goal post, richocheted to the left, back to the right post and then dropped right on the goal line. Before the goalie could find the puck Steve Skinner was johnny-on-the-spot to score the goal. At the five minute mark of the second period and Exeter playing a man short, Darrel Preszcator Flyers hold big margin The Zurich Flyers have taken a stranglehold on their South Huron Intermediate hockey league semi-final series with the Hensall Cascadians. The Flyers scored two wins this week to take a three games to none lead in the best-of-seven set, Thursday night Zurich scored a 7- 5 decision at the Hensall arena and Sunday afternoon on home ice they scored a 10-4 victory. The fourth game of the series is set for the Hensall arena tonight, Thursday at 8.30. Paul Corriveau's two third period goals provided the margin of difference in Sunday's win for the Flyers. It was Corriveau's third goal of the game, Hensall led 2-1 after the first twenty minutes of play on goals by Murray Bell and Jim Cooper while Dick Bedard replied for the Flyers. Melvin Wurm assisted on Bell's score while Cooper tallied on a three-way effort with Murray Glanville and Gary Kyle. The second period produced seven goals with the Flyers able to even the score at 5-5. Paul Corriveau, Ron Desjardine, Kevin McKinnon and Glenn Overholt were the middle frame marksmen for Zurich, Firing the Hensall goals were Bill Chipchase, Murray Glanville and Dave Beer. Glenn Overholt was the top point getter in the game as he came up with four assists in addition to one goal. stole the puck at the opposing blue line, deked a lone defen- ceman and fired a good shot into the .net. At 13.22 Brad Taylor let a high, hard shot go from the left side and the Niagara goalie in reaching for the puck deflected it into the net.
