Jets drop back to second spot
but have three games in hand

There is no minor hockey at the
arena this Saturday. Figure
skating is the order of the day.
The morning hours will he used in
decorating the arena and getting
everything in readiness for the
first big show,
This is the first time the Exeter
Figure Skating Club has
presented two shows, a matinee

Newby second
in Rec league
Newby Tire took over un-
disputed possession of second
place in the Exeter and district
Hoc hockey league with an 8-6 win
over Les Pines, the club they
were tied with for the runner-up
position.
The senior Hawks downed the
Cougars 5-4 to up their season
point total to 19 good for first
place. Newby Tire has 16 points
and Les Pines follow with 14
points. The Cougars bring up the
rear with three points.
Randy Decker's second goal of
the night proved to be the winner
as Newby Tire edged Les Pines 8.
6.'Leading the Newby goal total
was Dale Skinner with a hat trick
performance. Scoring single
goals were Jack Mayer, Mike
Cushman and Bob MacDonald.
Cushman also added five assists.
The top scorer for Les Pines
was Bill Farquhar with two
goals. Scoring in single fashion
were Chuck Becker, Fred Wells,
Scott Burton and Al Gillen.
A goal by Rick McDonald late
in the game provided the senior
Hawks with the winning goal in
their 5-4 decision over the
Cougars. It was McDonald's
second successful shot of the
night.
Checking in with a goal apiece
were Allan Knight, John Hayman
and i)oug Fairbairn.
Al Rundle scored twice to pace
the Cougars'scortng attack while
Howard Churchill and Gary
Balsdon each chalked up one
goal.

The Lucan-Ilderton Jets suf-
fered two defeats this week at the
hands of the Stratford Perths and
lost their grip on first place in the
Ontario Hockey Association
Senior "B" standings.
The Jets started the week on
the right foot with a 5-2 Wed-
nesday win over the Bothwell
Barons but then they ran into
Stratford, On Ilderton ice,
Sunday afternoon, the Perths
posted a 6.3 victory and Tuesday
night back in Stratford the Jets
were again on the short end of the
score 6-2.
While the Perths have 47
points, one more than the Lucan-
Ilderton club they have played
three more games which gives
the Jets a distinct advantage.
In action this week, the Jets
play host to the London Kings at
the Ilderton arena, Friday night
at 8,30 and Wednesday night they
travel to Bothwell to meet the
Barons.
Quick start
The Stratford club wasted little
time Tuesday night in showing
they were out to win as they
scored four times in the first
period without a reply from the
Jets.
Each team scored twice in the
second period and the final
session was scoreless, The L-1
goals came from Bill. Fairbairn
on a pass from Tom Hodgins and
Jamie Robb as he converted a
pass from Jack Nairn.
The Jets outshot Stratford 38-
26. Lorne Daer was in goal for the
Jets in the first period while Don
Stewart finished up.
Good second period
In Sunday's game against the
Jets, Stratford scored three
unanswered goals in the second
period and that was enough
scoring power to gain the 6.3
victory.
The first period was all even
with John Campbell and Mark
Daoust scoring for the Perths and
a pair of former Lucan Irish
juniors, Toni Hodgins and Dave
Revington replying for the Jets.
On the Revington score goalie
Lorne Daer combined with Pete
Loveless to draw assists. Barry
Baynham and Doug Galloway
helped to set up the goal by
Hudgins,
John St. Cyr, Ron Earl and Bob
Zimmer fired the middle frame
Stratford goals while St. Cyr
repeated in the third.
The final L-1 goal came from
the stick of Tom Hodgins with
Dick Doughty and Baynham
getting the play rolling.

Most of the scoring in the Jets
5-2 win over the Bothwell Barons,
Wednesday came in the third
period,
Each team scored once in the
first period with the second being
scoreless. Doug Johnston tallied
for Bothwell while Jamie Robb
intercepted a clearing pass in the
Barons end and quickly scored all
by himself for the Jets.
Robb and Pete Loveless scored
early in the third period to put the
Jets in front 3-1. Dick Doughty
scored two goals in the last two
minutes to ensure the Jets vic-
tory. The second was shot into an
empty net. Brian Hind was the
final Bothwell marksman.
Ausable loop
tightens up
The battle for all positions in
the Ausable Valley Rec hockey
league tightened up considerably
as the result of Sunday's regular
doubleheader.
The league leading Brinsley
club was upset 7-3 by the cellar
dwelling Shipka Bears and
second place Ailsa Craig edged
Brinsley 6-3.
Lieury continues in first place
wit!y.' 21 points, hut the margin
over runner-up Ailsa Craig has
been cut to a single point,
Brinsley is in third post with eight
points and Shipka is right behind
with seven points.
Rene Boogemans fired three
successful shots to pace the
Shipka win over Lieury. Next in
line with a two goal effort was
Wayne Desjardine while Ken
Lovie and Reid Burley each fired
one goal.
Ernie Schlegel took care of the
Lieury scoring single handedly
with a hat trick performance.
Charlie Eedy and Don
McAlpine fired two goals apiece
to head up the Ailsa Craig win.
Checking in with single scores
were Gwen Griffith and Bob
Donaldson.
Scoring in single fashion for
Brinsley were Jack Conlin, Greg
Revington and Phil Conlin.

Conklin Lumber defeated
Cowan's B.P. 7 -0 Saturday
morning. Doug Fletcher scored
five goals for Conklin with singles
by Joey Becker and Dave
Jackson. With play-offs starting
in two weeks B.P. will have to get
all their players out and playing
if they hope to be a contender.

ended 11-3. Ron Bilche scored
five goals, Eugene Clarke three,

start on Saturday March 3 Taylor
Motors meets Conklin Lumber in

The wrestling team at South
Huron District High School
completed another very suc-
cessful season Saturday as they
placed second In the WOSSA
tournament held at St. Clair high
school in Sarnia,
With an excellent performance,
the South Huron grapplers gained
a total of 51 points, only 10 points
behind the winning school,
Lambton Central of Petrone.
In addition, Dave Cyr won four
straight matches and brought
home the individual cham-
pionship at 194 pounds. He won
his first three bouts by falls and
the final match by a decisive 11-5
score. Last year Art Westelaken
won his division title at 136
pounds.
Another fine effort was turned
in by Mike Miller who won his
first four matches in the 1.48
pound division and lost in the
final by a 4-0 score.
Cyr and Miller will be
travelling to McMaster
University in Hamilton Friday to
compete in the Ontario
Federation of Secondary Athletic
Association wrestling finals.
The other wrestlers finished
well up in the standings. Bill
Degroot won his final match 4-0 to
finish second in the 148 division.
Paul Reaburn and Art
Westelaken placed fourth in their
respective divisions.
After the championships, coach
Doug Ellison commented, "I'm
very happy with the results, We
had a few tough breaks in the
early going or we might have
repeated as WOSSA champs, The
boys gave an excellent account of
themselves."
Over the complete season Dave
Cyr was named the most out-
standing wrestler with a record
of 30 wins and only one defeat,
Mike Miller was named the most

With the schedule rapidly
coming to a close, the Zurich
Flyers hold a five point lead at
the top of the standings in the
South Huron Intermediate
hockey league.
The Flyers scored a pair of
wins during the week to up their
season point total to 29. The
Centralia College Saints are
second with 24 points, the Hensall
Cascadians are third with 22
points while the Huron Park
Plugs hold down fourth spot with
17 points and the Shipka Bears
bring up the rear with 14 points.
This week, Zurich downed
Hensall 7-3 Thursday night and
edged Huron Park 10-9 in a
Monday night contest. In another
game Shipka downed the College
Saints.
Tonight, Thursday, Huron
Park travels to Hensall to do
battle.
Four unanswered goals in the
first two periods allowed the
Flyers to take Thursday's 7-3 win
over Hensall. Gerald Schantz
scored twice in the first period
with Bob Merner and Dick
Bedard adding singles.
Scoring came thick and fast in
the third session with each team
scoring three times. Gerald
Schantz completed a hat trick
performance for the Zurich club
while Glenn Overholt and Paul
Corriveau chipped in with a goal
apiece.
Bill Chipchase took care of all
of the Hensall scoring with a hat
trick effort and Ken Smale
assisted on each successful shot.

places second
A rink representing the Exeter
Legion finished a close second in
Trenton Sunday for the right to
represent Ontario in the
Canadian final in Toronto in
March.
The local foursome headed by
Jim Hewitt went into the final
game tied with the eventual
winner Bar ey C'happel of
Georgetown. Each had 6.1
records.
In the last series, ('happel won
his game easily while Hewitt's
rink lost a tight one 0-4 to Edgar
Clarke of Barrie.
Other members of the Exeter
rink were Tres Levier. Peter
Raymond and Jake Marks.
