Now, she is an expert in everything . . which is alright if only she wouldn't tell us so often. She's a walking, talking encyclopedia. Mr. & Mrs. Mike Burke and Susan, Brampton with. Milt Haigh. examined the plant, tsk-tsking over it, condemning the care I wasn't giving it and sure its demise was close at hand. Finally, one morning he ex- ploded, "That darned plant isn't doing a thing." "Do you suppose that's because it's plastic?" I asked him sweetly. He hasn't been so smart since. But, to get back to adult courses. The reason I want to take one is that many of my friends are and when I'm with them I feel like such a dummy as they discuss everything they know in language I don't even understand, A long time ago, somebody told me if you kept your mouth shut and looked bright-eyed everyone would assume you were in- telligent, Well, that's the theory I've been living by for several decades but now I'm beginning to think I'd like to throw something into the conversation once in awhile, too, (Besides, people are catching on.) Of course, there's the chance I might get hooked on these classes and couldn't give them up. Some people do, you know, and in their E OPP .11PEV°(' 1194 I was about to write and tell you I was starting off the New Year with a resolution to expand my brain by signing up for an adult course at Fanshawe College. I say 'I was about to tell you but then I told my husband first and he cracked my resolutionright up the middle. "Forget it," he said, "You're smart enough already." Now, there are many ways of taking that remark. The in- tonation he gave the word 'smart' didn't exactly sound like a compliment somehow. (Actually, he's a male chauvinist who likes his women stupid.) He really doesn't think I need 'no more knowledge , . he just knows (from experience, I fear) that come a snowy day I'd be too chicken to drive myself and he'd be conned into taking me and putting in tedious hours while I got smart. As for him, he doesn't need to get smart. He reads a lot and is an expert on everything. Even house plants. I bought one recently to replace the fern that had died in the front hall, I asked him if he liked it, He gave his standard answer, "How much did it cost?" So I told him. "Ye gods," he howled. After examining it he stated with further disgust, "You've thrown away your money. Look, the leaves are turning yellow . . it's dying already." "Is it?" I asked anxiously, He assured it was and that it had been overfertilized and over watered and if I was going to save the pesky thing I'd better give it more light. I agreed to do so. Every morning for a week he STORE HOURS Air; rgourL,f , 4340 4_, Dow., oagou... a few of the subjects she's got cornered. Of late years she's moved into the humanities, At a holiday party I saw her making her way towards me. I couldn't escape, "Oh," she enthused, "I must tell you about this interesting course I'm taking now. It's called 'Human Sexuality'. " After listening to her for half an hour I think maybe my husband's right. I am smart enough already. Scott Boyle spent four days skiing at Talisman sisi resort. Mr. & Mrs. Edward.
