Presented in the session was the proposal for the study to be completed by the James F. MacLaren firm with S. H. Janes in charge. He said that scattered development in rural areas may raise assessment in total, but it may also raise costs higher in the future. He suggested that farm assessment might have to go up to keep pace with increased demands of urban-like development in the rural areas. "Protection of the environment is not cheap," said Janes. "Anytime you're dealing with an urban area, you can run into problems of clean streams, clean air. You have to pay for them," Some discussion centred around development of lakefront property in Huron and the question was asked whether this land should be treated as "agricultural or recreational", It was pointed out the land was worth "three times as much for recreational purposes". "It is a question of public value," said Janes, "Do you want to eat or play?" Reeve Bill Elston, Morris Township, deplored the present system which prevents the severance of lots from farms in certain instances. He said he recognized that the land division committee was only following rules laid down for it, but said that in his township, city dwellers, for instance, looking for a summer home with estate-like qualities were buying whole Growing up By BRAD CANN Usborne Central When I was just as big as a polliwog. I would run down stairs and see what I got. I would scurry to my stocking on the fire place and start taking out oranges apples candy canes etc, etc, etc. I would look for all my presents and put them in a heap and wait for the rest to come down. When I became a teenager I still liked getting gifts but I think Christmas in a different way. I think of when baby Jesus was born in a manger in Bethelhem. When I got to be twenty I got married had children and watched them grow up. I realized what my mother and father went through. When my children grew up and I got old I liked Christmas day now because everyone got together. Christ- mas is a happy time "Do you like Christmas"? I do. Merry Christmas A Jolly Christmas By GERARD BRENNAN Mt. Carmel Twas Christmas day, Twenty fifth of December Why we had Christmas, Who could remember. There were the presents, Under the tree, Wrapped so pretty, As pretty can be. Then came the children, Down from up stairs, With a thud and'a bang, They went sprawling on chairs. They unwraped their presents, Working like mad, All were excited, What a Christmas they had. Then came the feast, Of all sorts of foods, They all stuffed themselves With all sorts of food. Then came nightfall When they all went to bed They knelt and said prayers For the Christmas they had Shirley and Ken Keller and family ,044404104W;401404041:X4040141 COOPER — To all our friends, relatives and neighbors a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Since they were unable to sever the buildings from the land, the farmland was growing up in weeds, fences were allowed to deteriorate and related problems were developing, "It is a detriment to the neigh- bors," claimed Elston. "It is causing some real headaches." Reeve Charles Thomas of Grey Township said he was in agreement with Elston. He said Grey Township, too, was ex- periencing similar troubles, perhaps to a lesser degree than in How Santa Claus Got a Replacement By ALLAN CASE Unborn Central Well a long time ago there lived some eskimos in the very far north, Each Christmas they would see Santa fly above them going to rest of the world. This was the tenth Christmas Inuvick had seen him fly over. He had decided this year that he would follow Santa to his home. He took the path Santa had flown over for guidelines to Canada. He had been going almost an hour when he came to a large cave, He went in and had ex- plored a little of the cave when he heard a roar. He looked up and saw the ferocious abominable snowman. He then knew it wasn't a cave, he was underneath him. He ran and ran until finally he got to a big snowdrift. He dived into it and found himself falling and falling three hundred feet down. He landed on a reindeer who jumped and ran because of this unexpected fright. He was bucked off into a water trough, A little elf came running to his assistance and took him to Mrs. Santa Claus. She saw that he was of a good size and told him of her husbands failing health, She wanted him to stay and take over his job. Inuvick accepted and in a few years he was using the same guidelines he followed to make it to his new home. Santa Gets Stuck By RONNALEE BOGART Exeter One Christmas the snow was falling gently down covering the ground with a blanket of white. I looked out of my window, I could see a glow of lights. It was so beautiful! Then I heard some singing at the door. Then Mom said time to go to bed, so I ran up stairs, I could hear the flames cratkling then Dad put it out. Everybody was a sleep, except me. All at once I heard the hoofs on the roof. Then I heard a loud yell. Help! Help! Get Me Out Of Here! I ran down stairs to see what all the noise was and there before my very own eyes I saw Santa stuck in the chimney! My eyes where as big as a frying pan. I said what are you doing upside down? Never mind that just get me down, How? Thats what you have find out! Please! Just get me out of here! O.K. I tickle you. No! No! Please! Here goes. Ho! Ho! Stop it! Please! PLOP! I am free! 0 happy day! You shall get a lot of toys. Thank you! You welcome Santa, Good Night San- ta! Good Night! Ho! Ho! MERRY CHRISTMAS! Christmas By PAMELA WOOD J.A.D. McCurdy It was a cold night and all was quiet. It was the twenty-fourth of December. "Christmas Eve". Bobby and Debbie Brown were fast asleep dreaming of what they would find under their tree the following morning. While in the living room was heard sad voices. And this is what was being spoken about. "Poor little Bobby and Debbie will wake up tomorrow with nothing under our scrawny tree." "I know!" exclaimed another voice. "I'm out of a job and all of our savings were spent on food!" Yes it was going to be a sad Christmas for the little children, While all this was going on, Deb- bie and Bobby woke up. Debbie told Bobby that their parents had nothing to worry about because Santa would come. Then Mr. and Mrs: Brown went to bed and all was quiet. During the night guess who came down the chimney? Who else but Santa and his elves, with toys and through the door like magic came brand new furniture to replace the old worn looking ones. After three hours of con- tinuous work, they quietly left. In the morning Debbie and Bobby woke up and quickly slipped down the stairs! All the decorations, new furniture, coloured television, stereo, turkey, pies, stove, refrigerator and under the tree gifts of all sorts and sizes! And instead of a scrawny tree they had the most beautiful tree in the world! Broadloom from wall to wall, desks, radios blankets, lamps, silverware, albums, books everything! All for their family because they believed. believed in Christmas When Christmas is Here By JOAN SKINNER Exeter When I sit near our Christmas tree, The lights seem to slate right at me, When Santa gets here. I'll pack all my gear To join him with all Christmas glee. Huron County is to be the pilot area for a study ,to review urban development in rural areas it was learned Thursday at county 11 council.
