Last week we touched only briefly on the international hockey, area baseball and activities of the Exeter figure skating club. Under the guidance of the RAP committee Exeter has a fine recreation program and one of the best parks in Western Ontario. Riverview Park which is being extended and improved a bit each year has drawn many good comments this past summer from visitors, some of whom were only passing through and stopped a few minutes for a picnic lunch, Back again to the program for youngsters, the swim- ming sessions at the local pool continue to draw excellent numbers in registration. This past summer wasn't quite as successful because of so much wet and cool weather. The facilities at South Huron District High School are being used more and more by the general public for various sport and craft activities. The enthusiasm shown by golfers, curlers, lawn bowlers and five pin bowlers continues to grow as more persons have extra spare time. We would hazard a guess that a large increase in sports and recreation participation by people of all ages has to be one of the sporting highlights of 1972. In team accomplishments, number one was the perfor- mance by the Exeter Hawks in winning the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" championship against Bancroft Jets. It was a complete team effort right from coach Bob White and manager Bob Baynham to everyone of the players and the fine fan support. It was the first junior hockey title in the history of Exeter and the fans deserve a lot of credit in addition to the players. Most of the club came mighty close the year before when they lost to Haliburton in the seventh and final game. Desire played a big part as the boys didn't want to suffer the same disappointment two years in a row. The number of Exeter supporters at Bancroft for the final two games has been estimated at close to 500 and if you heard the noise they made, the guess could have been doubled. Loyal fans make a team in any sport and this was a classic example. The way the Hawks are flying again this year after losing about five top notch players augers well for not only the Exeter Minor Hockey Association but other hockey groups in the area. Two Zurich area boys, John Mommersteeg and Gerald Weido and Harry Smits of Grand Bend moulded into a fine forward line and will be heard of plenty by the time the playoffs roll around. While the number of adults taking part in a variety of recreation activities is on the upswing, opportunities for fans to watch more and more hockey are also increasing. One league that doesn't receive the support it deserves is the South Huron Intermediate league. Teams from Centralia College, Huron Park, Shipka, Hensall and Zurich provide an exciting brand of hockey. This year's edition of the Exeter and District Rec hockey league appears to be better than ever. Many graduates of the junior Hawks over the past few years are in the line-ups of the 'four teams. With the London Kings moving tb:: balance of their home games to the Huron Park arena another excellent branch of hockey is within easy reach of local fans. This Senior 'B' grouping is reasonably well balanced. The Lucan-Ilderton Jets now playing their home games at the Ilderton arena have moved into second place in the league standings. At the high school level, the South Huron District High school wrestling team won the WOSSA Championship back on a blustery Saturday in March. Aside from the Western Ontario title, Doug Ellison's grapplers have set a record which will be hard to beat by a school from any area. The South Huron boys have won 50 straight / dual wrestling meets. Their first victory in this streak goes back to December in 1968. Special mention should go to Gerard Charrette who is the only member of the present team to be in on everyone of the 50 wins. Charrette's accomplishments are especially terrific because of some health Problems. The other team to bring home honours and this is beginning to be a habit are the Dashwood Tigers. In 1972 they won their third Ontario Baseball Associatinn Intermediate "D" championship in four years. FOR ALL GOOD .SPORTS By Ross .Haugh Merry rather slim during the holidays. They play host to the Lambeth Flyers tomorrow night, Friday at the Exeter arena, at 8.30 and the following Friday night the Mit- chell Hawks will supply the op- position. The Hawks took a five goal lead after one period and never looked back as they recorded an easy 10- 2 victory over the last place Tavistock Braves Friday night at the Exeter Arena. The win was the 14th of the year for the league leading Hawks. Exeter led 6-1 at the end of the first period and 7-1 after two periods. Tavistock opened the scoring at 1.23 of the first frame on a goal by Larry Steinman. Perry Stover wasted little time in evening the score as he not- ched an unassisted goal only twelve seconds later, Pete Glover put the Hawks ahead to stay on a backhand shot at 5.48. Murray Parsons assisted. At the 6.12 mark, Murray Parsons scored on a play started by Brian Campbell, Campbell sent a pass to Pete Glover who broke in alone on the Tavistock goal. The Brave's goaltender Neil Graham made the save but Parsons was close behind and slapped in the rebound. Perry Stover tallied his second goal of the game at 6:45 with help Goals plentiful in Rec hockey Emphasis was on the offensive at the Exeter arena Thursday night as the Exeter and district Rec league teams scored no less than 36 goals. The league leading senior Hawks were held to a 9-9 tie by the Cougars while Newby Tire downed Les Pines by a score of 11-7. The Hawks continue in first place with eight points while the other three clubs are deadlocked for second spot with four points apiece. Bob McDonald scored three times to lead the Newby Tire scoring in the win over the Les Pines club, Next in line with two successful shots each were Mike Cushman and Dale Skinner. Single goals were fired by Gary Parsons, Vic Neil, Tom Watt and Ed Kerslake. Fred Wells with a pair of goals was best for Les Pines. Adding goals in single fashion were Al Gillan, Al Rimmer, Tim Ewert, Scott Burton and Ron Cornish. Ron Dougall's second goal of the night with only 14 seconds left to play in the third period allowed the Cougars to gain the 9-9 draw with the senior Hawks. Gaylan Josephson also was a double scorer for the Cougars, The balance of goals were fired by Pete McFalls, Howard Churchill, Bill,Van Bergen, Mark Hearn and Brian Triebner, Steve Murley, John Hayman and Rick McDonald with two scores apiece led the Hawks marksmen. Single goals went to Denton Gaiser, Dennis Morrissey and Doug Fairbairn. The third annual Exeter mite hockey tournament slated for the Exeter arena during Christmas week is expected to produce plenty of exciting hockey action, A total of 10 teams of boys eight years of age and under are en- tered and will first see action in preliminary games on Tuesday, December 26 at the Exeter arena. Further playoff and final games will be played the following day, Wednesday. The first game Tuesday morning at nine o'clock has Huron Park meeting Brussels in the opening of a two game round robin series. One game will be played each hour throughout the day until six o'clock in the evening. South London and St. Marys hook up in the second game at 10 a.m, Hanover meets Exeter in the next contest at 11. Forest and Belmont do battle at twelve noon while Dorchester and Huron Park are slated for the one o'clock game. At two o'clock it's St. Marys Waxers get win in mite exhibition The Exeter Waxers downed Grand Bend by a score of 9-1 in a mite exhibition game at the Exeter arena, Wednesday night. Tom Raymond with three goals and two assists led Exeter in the scoring department. Close behind with two goals each were Graham Solomon and Scott Pincombe. Single scores came from the sticks of John Kernick and Bill Glover. The only goal for Grand Bend was fired by David Underwood who is actually a member of the Exeter team but was one of several players loaned to Grand Bend. The Hensall Cascadians broke even, in two South Huron hockey games this week and kept their season record at the 500 mark with five wins and the same number of losses. Thursday night at the Hensall arena, the Cascadians edged the Shipka Bears 5-4 while Monday night at the Huron Park arena the Huron Park Plugs downed the Cascadians 7-4. The Shipka club will be back in Hensall tonight, Thursday for another go with the. Cascadians and the following Thursday. Zurich will supply the opposition. Two goals in the third period Monday night ensured the Huron Park win over Hensall. With the Plugs leading 5-4 at the end of two periods of play, they got goals from Terry Millman ,and Fred Elder in the closing twenty minutes. It was Millman's second goal of the night. He scored in the first period along with Jim Pfaff and Allan Parsons for the winners. Charlie Schwalm and Ken Smale were the early Hensall gOal getters. In the second period each team scored twice. Ian McCallum and Bill Chipchase were the Hensall marksmen while Gary Leger and Larry Brintnellreplied for Huron Park, Late goal wins Al Corbett took a pass from Ken Smale and fired the winning goal at the 15.20 mark of the third period in Hensall's 5-4 win Thursday night. The score was 1-1 at the end of the first period with Bill Chip- chase blinking the light for Hensall and Shane Burley not- ching the Shipka counter. The Cascadians moved a goal ahead in the second period as they got goals from Ken Smale and Bill Taylor. The lone Shipka marker went to John Becker. Early in the final session each team scored on three-way passing combinations. John Becker scored for Shipka on passes from Reid Burley and Larry Laye.
