Same To-day as it Did 100 Years Ago? By CATHY FULLER • Exeter No, I think Christmas meant more hundred years ago, because the gifts were different and they meant more, In the past, there were fewer factories so the toys and gifts were all made by hang but to-day most of them are bought. If they were made by your own hands now, they would mean a lot more. Years ago they had to go out and cut their own tree but to-day you can go downtown and pay for one with a funny looking piece of paper and a few metal coins. Through the past years the real meaning of Christmas has been slipping because you think more about receiving gifts then you do about giving them. Perhaps we should stop and think about this. What Christmas Means to Me By JEFF SANGSTER Henson Some children think that Christmas is a time for toys. Christmas really means Jesus who was born in a manger, Angels told some shepherds about his birth, The shepherds saw a bright star shining on a stable in Bethlehem. There they saw Mary and Joseph kneeling before the baby Jesus in a manger. That's what Christmas means to me. Christmas Has Changed By CHERYL CHAPMAN Exeter On the day before Christmas, my dad and I would hitch up the sleigh and leave mom and my sister at home to bake cookies and pop popcorn. Dad always knew where just the right tree was and we were not long finding it. With four or five good blows the tree would fall into the snow. It was my job then to make sure the tree didn't fall off the sleigh as dad drove home. We'd drag the tree into the house and stand it by the fireplace. The lovely smell of good things to eat came from the kitchen. My sister would bring in bowls of popcorn and cranberries, two needles and a spool of thread. We'd sit for an hour or two stringing popcorn and cranberries. Mom would bring out the cookies covered with icing and brightly wrapped candies. Dad would put the angel on the top of the tree and mom helped my sister and me to put on the popcorn strings and tie on the cookies and candies. Dad would balance the candles carefully on the branches. Then while we sat by the fire and watched the candles flicker we'd think of what Santa would bring. Now at Christmas time, my grandson and I hop in the car and go buy a tree while my wife gets the box of decorations down from the attic. I put the angel on the tree's top and string on the lights. My wife and grandson hang on the balls, tinsel, and icicles. Now while I sit and watch the lights blink, I think of how much Christ- mas has changed. By Gwyn The Bible tells us the heavenly host brought to the shepherds `tidings of great joy .. . peace and goodwill toward men'. How, we may ask, can we find Peace in a world that is torn by conflicts in nations; communities and often in our own hearts? Where is the promiWd peace in a society that seems to have gone mad? It is surely not befitting to use Christmas as a sort of sanc- tuary where peace reigns for but a day, and then throw our lives back into turmoil and discord as soon as it is over, Glen H. Asquith, says in a recent article that he has come to Festive event at Brinsley By GORDON MORLEY The UCW Christmas meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Wilbert Lewis. Mrs. Jack Trevithick opened the meeting with a few words of meditation. Scripture was read by Mrs;.... Arnold Wasnidge after which three Christmas carols were sung. Mrs. Trevithick gave a reading. Mrs. Wasnidge and Mrs. Harvey Steeper read poems and Mrs. Trevithick one on "How Far to Bethlehem." Mrs. Steeper gave the story on "The First Noel," after which we all joined in the singing of the hymn. Mrs. Trevithick closed with prayer. Mrs, Fenton took charge of the business. Cindy Prest had two contests. He says, 'If I come to Christmas and am immunized against hate and violence, the peace of Christmas becomes portable and I can walk through my world without fear that I shall be infected by the madness around me. Each Christmas, then, I would come back for a "booster shot" of peace.' Goodwill or love was another part of the heavenly message. At Christmastime we experience an outpouring of goodwill for one another. We are often filled with love which overflows to distant friends, loved ones, those less fortunate in hospitals and prisons and the hungry and needy. But after celebrating Jesus' birthday we all too often return to our old ways and think only of our own needs once more. Again, we read in the Christ- mas story that after the wisemen worshipped Jesus and presented their gifts, they were warned in a Fp 44Cas4Via-14.1 1:11144%?:441::?.?4tq:41«14i. ;144.14.i.o.,AV.101?Al;q1411:ittizNiv.4.i'vitti'431t4tAtidvNi'13F41:?A'{ggried's4011gtrCa igli 9001 ‘ted, e4 vre44 on 6: Used Ski- Doos (And Other Makes) $AVE $$ NOW A + + + God bless thy' year!
