Hockey Don't Miss It London Kings VS Lucanliderton Jets Sunday Oct. 22 2 p.m. ILDEFtTON ARENA Gebel Cabinets & Lucan Produce are Jef Supporters While baseball the football are very much in the limelight especially on the national level, many area hockey teams are seriously preparing for the up- coming puck season. The hockey season locally should be bigger, better and busier than ever. The Exeter Hawks and Lucan Irish are both back in the OHA Junior "D" loop while the Lucan-Ilderton Jets have moved their sights a bit higher and will be performing in Ontario Senior "B" company, The South Huron intermediate hockey league which got underway last year expects to have the same five clubs back in action. They are Hensall, Zurich, Dash- wood, Huron Park and Centralia Agriculture College. In minor hockey ranks, full slates of teams are being organized in Exeter, Huron Park, Hensall, Zurich, Grand Bend and Lucan. Top notch conditioning Fxeter Hawk coach Bob White seems to be taking a leaf from the book on the recent Canada - Soviet Union hockey series, White has been working his charges at a terrific pace to ensure they are in top notch physical con- ditioning when the season opens, The kindly coach told us Friday night the Hawks will be in better shape than they were a year ago when the season opened. To show his intense schedule of workouts, immediately after Friday night's exhibition win over Lambeth, White called a practice for Saturday afternoon at Huron Park and the team travelled to Strathroy Sunday afternoon for a return exhibition game against the Rockets. The first use of the new ice sheet at the Exeter arena was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon with public school children having an open skating session. The Hawks using the ice at Huron Park for their first practices and games are switching back to the local ice palace this week. Arrangements are being made for an exhibition game Friday night. If finalized in time, details will be found elsewhere on these sport pages. Geese at the end In our many jaunts around the country looking for picture possibilities and news for the T-A we have often found ourselves on a wild goose chase. Well, it finally happened. That's right, we found geese at the end of what looked like a wild goose chase. Saturday morning, a group of Huron County school teachers were participating in an outdoor science seminar in the Hullett wildlife area, north of Clinton. Following directions received from one of the teachers involved we headed for Clinton about 9:30. By 10:45 we were completely lost and headed back to Clinton for further directions. This time we found the farm, but again not due to the latest directions but to a lucky turn. Finding the farm turned out to be easier than finding the group of naturalists. More than a half hour of tramping through a very interesting bush failed to find anyone. Deciding to give up the wait we headed out and on heading down a side road in the general direction of Clinton, there they were, watching a flock of wild geese at a con- servation area look-out. Lots of enthusiasm Most of the minor sport programs in Exeter are drawing plenty of enthusiasm from local youngsters. The ballet classes being conducted by Debi Wooden are filled completely with 47 youngsters. Registration for gymnastic classes will be held Satur - day morning in the new gym at South Huron high school while youngsters wishing to participate in activities of the Exeter figure skating club may sign up at the same time at the arena. TA Ball Quiz Answers to last week's questions - Whitey Ford is the winningest pitcher in World Series play with 10 victories. The New York Mets won the World Series in 1969 in their only start. Switch of quizes With the ending of the baseball season officially this week with the expected conclusion of the World Series, we will be completing our baseball quiz and switch to hockey questions. First ha If even Play was extremely close in the first half of play against Stratford Central with each team managing to put eight points upon the scoreboard. It took a third down pass play with less than a minute to go in the second quarter to pull the Panthers back on even terms. With Stratford leading 7-1 and time actually running out, the first two passing attempts by quarterback Perry Stover went incomplete, On the third down situation, from the Stratford 25 yard line, Stover rolled out to the left and under strong Stratford pressure found Brian Tuckey loose in the flat area and hit him with a perfect pass for the six pointer. Paul Robinson split the uprights with the convert attempt and the ball game was all tied up. The only other point for the Panthers in the opening half came early in the first quarter when Stratford kicked from deep Mt. The kick was very short and Panther Gary Lavier and the Stratford kicker battled for the ball along the sideline inside the Stratford goal line. The referee ruled the ball was fumbled out of bounds in the end zone and awarded a single point to South Huron. Early in the second quarter, Rudy Boogermans hit Don Boogermans with a long 52 yard pass to score a Stratford touch- down and Don kicked the convert to put Stratford in front 7-1. The Panthers started to pull together in the second half with the defence putting a big rush on the Stratford quarterback and he was caught behind the line on several occasions in passing situations. After three failures to take advantage of scoring op- portunities inside the Stratford 20, the Panthers aided by a holding and no yards penalty against their opposition were able to get across the goal line.
