Well; your local code is not as
complicated. Obviously. since fewer
people live in your area, we don't need
as many codes. In fact, all we need is
one code to represent all the people in
your town and on your rural route.

PALFY'S WEEKLY COMMENTS
Find town bell
13y MARY E, SOU IR
Concern about Canada's
ecology has produced many
amateur ecologists in this
country. Every student from
kindergarten throug cu11egG~ is
made aware of the nsequences
of failure to cope with land, air
and water pollution
Our air is polluted by hg0.0, of
aeroplanes, cars and smoke
stacks . Water is polluted by
impl'operly treated Re w ago and
by ships that dump petroleum
and poisonous bilge Factories
continue to use plastic containers
and non-returnable bottles.
The dictionary prints • •An
ecologist is an individual con
cerned about the relationships
between organisms and their
en ironment
Lucart has an amateur
ecologist. but she won't recognize
herself by that title. Gerry Zinn,
Mrs. Roy Zmn e is a woman
keenly interested in creating
many varieties of liz.,ndicrafts.
It's purely coincidental that some
crafts make use of materials that
are not biodegradable: that is,
they will not return to nature by
rotting or some similar process.
Gerry and Roy's home on Main
St., Luca!), boasts of two large.
high-ceilinged 'front rooms',
perfect settings for dozens of
colorful creations. Ott one room
is Gerry's workroom with the
necessary sewing machine.
Boxes of lace ribbon, em-
broidery threads and V4 001 vie.
with all shades and shapes of
empty plastic detergent and
bleach bottles. cardbrrrd tolls
and plastic egg cartons.
"I like the look and feel of the
plastic egg cartons, Gerry," I
said, "But aren't they difficult to
dispose of?"
"I can dispose of any that are
available," Gerry laughs. "I buy
eggs in them myself and friends
give me theirs."
As Gerry points out the dif-
ferent floral arrangements, I
inquire where she learned the
craft .
"I first saw them on a visit to
Florida, Instruction from a
woman there got me started. The
material to make these flowers is
free, or very inexpensive and no
special tools are needed. Use a
heated awl or a darning needle to
carve a design, to fuse or to cut
the plastic."
Gerry explains that she enjoys
creating her own designs now, To
prove how durable the plastic and
the colours are, Gerry says, "The
floral arrangement I took to the
emetery weeks ago is still in
perfect condition,"
Gerry has a booklet on Egg
Carton Magic, which explains
that colours can be changed with
tempera, all-purpose spray paint
or acrylic. Cartons can be
transformed into butterflies,
candy cup favours, placecard
holders, wall plaques and Easter
and Christmas decorations.
Eventually Gerry plans to open
a craft and hobby shop in the
rooms mentioned above, where
materials and instruction will be
available to the public. If this
dream comes true, creative
people will have a charming
place to meet, buy supplies and
exchange hints,
And, by the way, don't you
agree that Canada can use a few
more amateur ecologists?

Switzerland
The weekly meeting of the
Sunshine Club was held Thursday
in the Masonic Hall, Lucan. In the
absence of the president Mrs.
Thomas Emery Sr. presided.
Euchre was enjoyed by- 14
members.
William Frost, who has just
returned from a month's holiday
in Switzerland gave a resume of
his travels there, by showing
postcards. and at a later date will
show slides of his trip. Lunch was
provided by Mrs. Ewan Hodgins
and Mrs. Cecil Robb.

Mrs. Earl (Pamela)
Knoblauch, Lucan, won three
first prizes and one second prize
at the Ilderton Fair recently,
including one for cheese cake, tea
rose (1 bloom) and an appliqued
quilt.
Her daughter Coralin also
walked away with three first for
her apple pie, young pup and best
dressed pet.
Coralin is a ten-year-old, grade
5 student at Bidduiph Central
School. She began her baking
career using a child's Easy-Bake
oven. However, the recipe and
the oven used to make the prize-
winning pie, were her mother's,
Cora lin's apple pie
Pastry:
3 cups pastry flour
1 2 lb. lard
1 tsp. salt
In a measuring cup beat an
egg, add 1 tsp. lemon juice and
enough water to make 1/2 cup
liquid.
Filling:
Use the required 9" foil pan.
Roll bottom crust. Mix apples
with 3 4 cup granulated sugar and
2 tbsp. flour. Dot with butter.
(Coralin did not use any spice).
Place top trust in position. Cut
design. Flute edges together to
seal. Brush top lightly with milk.
Bake in hot oven (450 degrees) 15
minutes, then reduce heat to
moderate (350 degree) and
continue baking for 15 to 30
minutes longer, or until apples
are tender.

Sightless guest
addresses club
The regular meeting of the
Lucan Lion's Club saw four
guests out from the West Lion's
Club, London, Wally Kennedy
one of these members,
himself sightless and 'an
executive of the C.N.I.B. was
guest speaker for the night after
which the Club canvassed the
village of Lucan.
Thanks to the generosity of the
good citizens of Lucan nearly $400
was raised.
School completion
delayed by weeks
Completion of the 1.5 million
dollar construction program at
Medway High School in Arva
will be delayed from mid-
November to the end of
December. This was reported to
the Middlesex County Board of
Education at its meeting this
week with representatives of the
construction management firm
and architects in charge of the
project.
A.P. Vibe, of the architectural
firm of Shore, Tithe, Henschel,
Irwin, said the delay on the
building additon was caused by
three factors: unexpectedly high
electrical and mechanical
estimates, the architect's
reluctance to make changes in
design until all other methods of
bringing cost into line had been
explored, and the steel strike
which interrupted delivery of
roof decking.
Mr. Tilbe also said delay in
making alterations to the existing
building was caused by an overly
optimistic estimate of time
required for the job, suppliers not
meeting commitments, and the
need to replace gas piping in the
lab areas,Acting on a recom-
mendation of its committee that
interviewed five architects, the
Board appointed the firm of
Dickson and Ventin, of Wood-
stock and Simcoe, as architects
for construction of alterations to
the existing building and an
addition to North Middlesex
District High School in Parkhill.
This project, scheduled for
completion in the fall of 1973, will
enlarge the school to ac-
commodate grades 7 and 8 and
provide occupations shops, other
rooms and a new gymnasium.
In other business, the board
agreed to provide, on an ex-
perimental basis to the end of
December, 1972, late bus tran-
sportation for County students
attending London secondary
schools. The service will be for
students who stay at school after
regular classes for music,
athletics, and other recogniZed
extra-curricular activities,
Estimated cost of the service
for 170 students is approximately
$150 per week.

Not too much for comments
this week Comrades as I must
make them opt a little earlier due
to the fact I will be taking aweek's
vacation. We are making a trip
into the beautiful Northern part
of our lovely province.
Now is the time the leaves are
changing color. Sure worth the
trip if you have the time,
Comrades.The multi colors of the
maple; the brown oak; the yellow
birch, and deep greens of the
spruce all mingled together on a
gentle mountain slope. Sore wish
I were an artist, what a beautiful
picture I could paint. Jealousy
will get you no where folks.
All members of Branch 540 and
their ladies are reminded that
Comrade Len Fisher, sports
officer has called a meeting for
8:00 p.m, Tuesday, October 17 to
discuss our branch mixed sports
program for the coming season.
Let us have a good turn-out, The
sports committee want your
ideas on the sports you want
played, when you want them
played and set up rules for play.
This program is for your en-
joyment; therefore take an ac-
tive' part in setting it up and
getting the wheels in motion.
With the interest generated so far
this should prove to be 540's best
sports year ever - it's up to you
the member to make it so,
Did you get your Early Bird
lapel pin yet? This is the
distinguishing badge of a
dedicated member who wants to
get behind good old 540 and get
her over the top membership
wise.
You will see some of them
around; if you watch closely
around the Branch, the chaps
with a little extra spring in their
step and that devil may care
smile on their lips are the ones.
After all why shouldn't they look
different, these are the Comrades
who back the branch and make
the programs work. Come on,
Comrades get into the swing and
back 540 by paying your 1973 dues
now.
It is understood our good legion
friend Roy Hodgins found 'Ye Old
Towne Bell' while demolishing
the Town sheds to make room for
the new Lucan Fire Hall, I
wonder if any thought has been
given to including this bit of
Lucan's historic past into the
proposed centennial cairn,
Sure would be a great way to
preserve it and 'make sure it
doesn't get stuck away in some
corner and forgotten forever,
Give it some thought' folks: I
wonder what the bell could tell us
it if could only speak.
Here's something you have
been waiting to hear! Remember
'Slim Gordon' - Smilin' Carl
advises by popular demand he
has been able to get Slim for a
return performance at 540. The
date Saturday, October 21 in the
main hall upstairs. We are indeed
fortunate to obtain the services of
`Slim' and are looking forward to
another fine evening of en-
tertainment. Remember that's
Saturday, October 21, Keep this
date open now.
540's Poppy Chairman advises
he and his committee have been
working hard and have held
several meetings getting events
organized. Here are some of the
highlights, The house to house
