The Women's Auxiliary to
South Huron Hospital was formed
in the fall of 1952, just a few
months before the hospital Was
officially opened on February 3,
1950. Since that time they have
been instrumental in the affairs
of the hospital,
The book containing the history
of the auxiliary from 1952 to 1967
• was destroyed in a flash flood
which occurred in Exeter in July,
1969, Some Pages were salvaged START SOMETHING GOOD TODAY
and some rewritten, but much of
the information was lost.
Nevertheless, nothing could
erase the physical examples of
help, in the form of equipment,
and furniture which the auxiliary
has donated to the hospital.
In the 20 years since the
auxiliary was founded, they have
raised upwards of $60,000 through
everything from rummage sales
to tag days and teas.
Up until 1961, most of the
money was spent on linens for the
hospital, and members spent
countless hours cutting and
sewing. Since that time, they
have furnished their own room at
the hospital where monthly
meetings are staged. Two sewing
machines were purchased and a
TV set supplied for the use of the
nurses.
They furnished a sitting room
at the nurses's residence when it
was erected and in 1957,theymade
held only two weeks ago,receipts
were more than doubled from
that first event.
In addition to looking after the
needs of the hospital in general,
one of the main interests of the
auxiliary has been the welfare
and comfort of the nurses and
staff.
They have provided much of
the furnishings and extras which
have made the nurses residence
comfortable. The ladies also
institituted a bursary of $100 a
year for three years in 1957 for a
grade 12 or 13 student from SH-
DHS who chooses nursing as a
career.
The major fund raising events
sponsored by the auxiliary now
centre around the annual spring
and fall rummage sales and the
annual tag day.
The president of the auxiliary
is Mrs. Mel Geiser, and the
important job of historian falls to
Mrs. Valeria Armstrong,
The book she maintains lists
page after page of events held by
the auxiliary since 1952 and is a
record of hard work, generosity
good times and fulfillment of an
aim to assist "in every possible
way".

the major purchase of an
autoclave costing $3,500.
The ladies spent $1,400 setting
up a classroom and equipping the
diet section of the kitchen for the
Certified Nursing Assistants, and
donated a porto-lift in 1963 and 64.
Their bank balance never stays
filled too long, and in 1966 they
paid out well over $5,000 to
purchase a dishwasher and ac-
cessories and to meet the balance
owing on the new operating, table
they deemed necessary.
During the last few years, the
auxiliary has continued to
provide service and make in-
valuable donations to the
hospital.
In 1971 alone, they purchased a
portolife patient lifter, a wheel
chair and hammock seat and a
deep freeze, among other things.
Over 100 area women attended
the first organization meeting on
November 1.0, 1952 and the
numbers have increased since
that time. There were presently
120 members in the hospital
auxiliary in 1971 and the 1972-73
membership drive is on right
now.
They were told at that first
meeting that the math aim of the
auxiliary was to assist the board
and staff of the hospital in every
way possible. To say they have
lived up to that aim is to make an
understatement.
Mrs. Kenneth Johns was
elected the first president of the
group and the first fund-raising
event was a tag day organized by
Mrs. F.J. Milner in December of
1952, Each district carried on the
project in their respective
communities and receipts ex-
ceeded $530.
At the most recent tag day,
