A suggestion from the Huron
MOH to bring about better
building and sanitary inspections
in the county failed to meet with
any support from Exeter council
this week.
Reeve Derry Boyle outlined the
proposals made by Dr, Frank
Mills, the Huron Medical Officer
of Health.
Dr. Mills suggested that a fee of
$100 be charged for permits to
erect new homes throughout the
county. A proportionate figure
would also be charged for

severances so far this year, and
by the end of the year it is
estimated that 300 will have been
before the committee. Estimated
cost to the end of December, said
Berry, should be about $24,000.
"You can see, therefore, that
300 severances would give us
revenue of $12,000 against a cost
of $24,000," stated Berry,
"meaning that the direct cost to
the County would be ap-
proximately $12,000 or $1,000 Or
month."

Administrator for Huron
County, John Berry, told council
Friday at its September meeting
that the majority of budgets are
well within the original estimates
as of June '30, 1972.
"Total revenue to date is
$1,493,401.25 with expenditures of
$1,443.137,18, or a surplus of
$50,264.07," said Berry.
The working capital fund now
sits at $200,000, the employee
benefits fund at $60,000 and the
hospital reserve fund at $55,600,
he added.

During the day, Spence Cum-
mings, Development Officer for
Huron, was asked how things
looked at Vanastra, formerly
CFB Clinton. Cummings said
there were now 160 families
located in the homes there, two
industries are already at the
Base and there are "a few other
inquiries":
Campbell asked Cummings
'why the county officer, hired by
Huron, should be so interested in
protnoting a private individual's
business. He said Van Gastel had
purchased the base and he should
be responsible for the promotion
of his project from that point.
Cummings said he does no
more for Van Gastel than he
would do for any other person
from anymunicipality. He said
his main concern was to "get
industry into the county" and to
see that it locates in proper
areas.
Campbell said that Cummings
had been requested to go to
McKillop to discuss the township
park, but that he'd been there
only once. Cummings said he was
well acquainted with the
McKillop situation and had been
there six or seven times for talk
with McKillop officials.

between 1972 and proposed 1973
apportionments, the major
changes being in connection with
Tuckersmith Township and
Stephen Township as it relates to
the Canadian Forces Bases.
"The Tuckersmith situation
will gradually be adjusted and
worked into the regular
assessment figures," said Allan
Campbell, chairman of the
executive committee of council.
Fail to understand
liquor store request
The Liquor Control Board of
Ontario has requested Exeter
council to request the Liquor
Control Board of Ontario to keep
their Exeter store open six days
per week.
Confused? Well, so were
members of Exeter council when
the matter was brought to their
attention at a special meeting,
Mayor Jack Delbridge said the
LCBO wanted the request for six-
day service to come from council,
although he was at a loss to ex-
plain the reason.behind it.
Members pointed out there
were no stipulations regarding
the hours of business for any
stores in Exeter, and they could
see no reason why the LCBO
couldn't decide themselves what
they wanted to do.
"They can do what they want,"
noted Councillor Bruce Shaw,
while other members suggested
the LCBO wanted council to do
their work for them.
,No action was taken on the
-request.
The local store is open six days
during the summer months.

commercial construction and

He indicated that on the
present figures, this would result
in an income of $50,000 to $60,000
per year and this could then be
used to hire two inspectors to
check all building and plumbing
in the county.
Councillor Ken Ottewell said
the fee suggested was too high
and that Exeter had a good
system now and it wasn't costing
the homeowner as much as that.
Some concern was expressed
by Councillor Tom MacMillan
that two inspectors couldn't
handle the job and most mem-
bers cited concern over the fact
construction jobs could be held up
while contractors waited for the
inspectors.
Boyle said Exeter was more
fortunate than most communities
in Huron in that there is a
building inspector available here.
He said many of the townships
could not get inspectors to serve,
The Reeve also pointed out that
Dr. Mills was attempting to find a
solution to the problem of not
having plumbing inspectors.
