The race will be decided by the time this issue hits the street, but we believe Tuesday night's game will be the most important and two veteran journeyman pitchers will have a lot to say about the outcome. The Red Sox were to start Luis Tiant and the Tigers were scheduled lo go with Woody Fryman. Both pitchers have been real surprises for their respective clubs after being given up on by other teams, Tiant had a record of 11 wins and only a single loss since the first of August and has been the big reason for the Red Sox ability to hang in there. We heard Bob Addie, a veteran Washington sports writer talking about the Red Sox on a recent broadcast. Addle said the Sox were hanging together with the help of baling wire, spit and thread. Fryman, a late acquisition by the Tigers from the National League has been a real surprise, winning nine games since coming to Detroit. If the Tigers do win the pennant one could say a Canadian had a big hand in bringing this about. Actually it was a left arm that did the trick. In Sunday's win over Milwaukee, John Hiller was the winning pitcher. It was Hiller's first pitching win since, October 1, 1970, exactly two years to the day. Hiller, a native of Scarborough, Ontario suffered a heart attack shortly after his 1970 win and didn't get back to the Tiger line-up until this season was well underway. An interesting show The Exeter Kinsmen club is presenting an interesting show this Saturday at the Exeter arena. Members of the enthusiastic service club are staging a Snowmobile Show. It is expected to be the largest show of its kind in Ontario with many dealers displaying the latest in snow machines and equipment. In attendance for the event will be Miss Mid-Western Ontario Joanne Burke of Exeter. Joanne representing Exeter's Derby Dip will be representing Western Ontario at next year's Miss Canada contest. Also in attendance Saturday will be the 1972 Kinfest Queen, Lois Porter, of Exeter. Ready to start over One of the most unbelievable records in high school football in this area and probably in Ontario came to an abrupt end, Monday afternoon. After winning 30 straight games which included three Huron-Perth Conference junior championships, the South Huron Panthers lost to Wingham by a score of 28-6. There's an old saying about "all good things coming to an end" and this applies here. The junior club and their coach Doug Ellison deserve a lot of credit in keeping up their win.streak as long as they did. It takes a lot of effort on the part of everyone to keep a team of any kind "up" for this length of time which stretched over three full seasons. We hope that they get right down to work and start another win streak which will take them to a fourth straight title. While on the subject of win streaks, the South Huron seniors are off to a good start. With a fair nucleus of returnees from last year and many graduates from the championship junior club of a year ago, coaches Ron Bogart and Glenn Mickle have the makings of an excellent team. They are off and running with two wins and a tie in regular league play, plus an exhibition win over a strong Strathroy club. Juniors getting ready With the excitement of the just concluded Canada-Russia hockey series dying down and baseball and football much in evidence on our TV screens these days it's tough to realize that the local hockey season is really close. The two area teams in the OHA Western Junior "D" series are well along with their practice sessions and are drawing plenty of prospects. In their first practice session Saturday the defending champion Exeter Hawks had 45 prospective players out to practice and Monday night 36 answered the call issued by coach. Bob White. It was the same story with the Lucan Irish where new coach Steve Storey was faced with 50 hopefuls at the first workout. It's good to see the veteran Storey remaining in the hockey picture as a coach. He has been around the hockey scene in Lucan for quite while and combined with Don Urbshott in organizing the Lucan-Ilderton Jets four years ago. Storey played part of last year with the Jets between numerous injuries and has decided to hang up the blades and devote his time to helping the youngsters in Lucan. Answers to last week's questions — The five players hitting four home runs in one game since 1948 were Pat Seerey of the Chicago White Sox in 1948 Gil Hodges of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950; Joe Adcock of the Milwaukee Braves in 1954; Rocky Colavito with Cleveland in 1959 and Willie Mays of the Giants in 1961. Walter Johnson holds the all-time strike-out record of 3,508. Questions — One player was a member of a World Series championship club on no less than 10 occasions. Who is he? Another player with the same club holdS World Series records for scoring the most runs, most runs batted in, most home runs, most bases on balls and most strike-outs, Who is he? Lose after 30 wins It finally happened. The South Huron District High School junior football club was on the losing end of a Huron-Perth Conference game. This shouldn't sound too unusual but it actually is, The local junior footballers, winners of three straight H-P titles had been unbeaten in their previous 30 starts until they ran into Wingham on the local gridiron, Monday afternoon. Wingham turned in an ex- cellent effort going both ways while the South Huron Panthers failed to generate any scoring power and were listless on defence. The final score was 27-6 for the visiting Wingham boys. Thursday afternoon in Listowel, the Panthers won their 30th game succession with a 27-8 victory, While the junior club had their win streak broken, the senior Panthers remained unbeaten in the regular 1972 season, The seniors held Listowel to an 8-8 draw Thursday and broke loose with a convincing 29-0 win over Wingham, Monday afternoon. Solid team effort Monday's senior Victory over Wingham was achieved on a solid team effort with the defensive corps in particular being out- standing. Wingham was never able to get inside the South Huron 30 yard line at anytime during the game and were actually on the minus side of the statistics for yards gained rushing. The visitors had a net yard loss of two yards in 25 carries. Gary Lavier, a standout on the defence provided most of the Panthers scoring power. Lavier scored three touchdowns to lead the scoring parade and a roughing penalty nullified another 25 yard gallop by Lavier on a count return. He picked up a total of 89 yards on nine carries from the line of scrimmage. The game was only a few minutes old when Lavier broke off tackle and rambled 28 yards over the Wingham goal line. Paul Robinson made good on the convert and the Panthers were off and running 7-0. The Panthers left the field at Blyth team wins in darts Ten teams participated in the annual Formosa dart com- petitions for Huron County at the Exeter Legion hall Saturday. The four top clubs qualified to play in inter-county play at London, November 4. Heading the dart throwers Saturday was a team from Blyth with two Exeter teams next in line and a Fish and Game club team from Clinton in fourth and final qualifying spot. Members of the Blyth team were George Ostler, Harold Knox, Ken Patterson and Tom Thompson. On the roster of the Exeter club finishing second were Duff Rothbauer, Melan Sedlak, Norm Ferguson and Keith Brittain while Bill Medd, Harvey Hillman, Mid Wallace and Cal Jones made up the other local entry, half-time with a 9-0 margin on the strength of a two point safety touch late in the third quarter. Randy Preszcator broke through the Wingham line and tackled the quarterback behind the goal-line for the two points. In the third period it was Lavier going over for his second touchdown, this time from three yards out and Robinson again booted the convert. The first of two South Huron major scores in the fourth period came when Allan Knight blocked a Wingham punt, scooped the ball up and ran 35 yards into the end zone. Robinson again split the uprights with the convert but the point was lost when South Huron was called for holding. Gary Lavier swept around the end from one yard out late in the game to record his third touch- down of the afternoon. Paul Robinson notched the convert, actually his fourth consecutive. Get tie in fourth The 8-8 senior Panther draw with Listowel, Thursday was accomplished on a 25 yard single' by Paul Robinson when an at- tempted field goal went wide. There was one scoring play in each of the four quarters of the game. Robinson started the game exactly as it finished with a single point in the opening period, Listowel scored a touchdown and added a two point convert on a passing play to do all their tallying in the second period. The Panthers narrowed the gap to a single point in the third period when Wayne Regier completed an eight yard run to make the score 8-7 for Wingham and set the stage for Robinson's tying point. Dave Cyr did most of the ball lugging for the Panthers picking up a total of 122 yards in 21 tries TRYING A FREE SHOT Attempting a free shot in Tuesday's senior girls basketball game at South Huron District High school is Lynne Farquhar. T-A photo into the line. Three Wingham touchdowns in the fourth quarter put Monday's game out of sight for the junior Panthers who were able to score only six points in the first period. In the opening session, the Panthers moved down the field 65 yards in 10 plays to score with Paul Truemner going over from three yards out. Wingham scored a touchdown only four plays later to tie the score A single pointon a punt put Wingham ahead to stay in the second period. Fumbles and interception caused the Panthers downfall. Every period score The junior Panthers scored in every quarter in running up Thursday's 27-8 victory over Listowel. Four of the Panther touch- downs came as the result of Listowel fumbles or pass in- terceptions. The first South Huron score was set up when Randy Funston recovered a Listowel fumble. On the next play quarterback Bill Wilson passed to Tim Ross for The past week has brought about two defeats in Huron Perth basketball for the South Huron teams. Thursday, the locals Fisited Listowel and ended 'up' losing both games to the home teams, The junior game was 28-8 while the Senior score was 35-8. Listowel used a zone defense, effectively limiting shooting and rebounding by South Huron. Tuesday, the result was the same as Stratford Northwestern came to Exeter. The juniors managed to stay within reach until the final quarter when they were outscored 21-8. The game ended 38-19 in favour of Nor- thwestern. Gail Fuller was top scorer with 8 points. Loretta Ayotte, Gayle Ecker and Julianne Brittain also played a strong game with Loretta doing some fine defen- sive work. The seniors were outplayed by a very strong Northwestern team and could not seem to get a steady offense going. Once again, it was the last quarter that made the difference and the game an 11-yard touchdown, In the second period, Kevin Wareing picked off an errant Listowel pass and shortly after Paul Truemner went eight yards into the end zone. The Panthers picked up two points on the convert with Wilson passing to Ross. Listowel's only scoring came late in the first half. Again it was a fumble recovery, this time by Wayne Riddell that set up the third South Huron score. On the next play a successful screen pass from Bill Wilson to Paul Truemner took the ball over the goal line and Wilson booted the convert, In the fourth quarter, Tom Richardson intercepted another Listowel pass. Before the game ended Paul Truemner culminated a 65 yard Panther march with his third touchdown of the afternoon on a 25 yard gallop. Doug Mclsaac voted the best offensive player by his Panther team-mates suffered a broken arm in the second quarter. Wayne Riddell was named the best defensive Panther on the strength of seven key tackles. ended 51-26. Deb Riddell and Deb Wooden were the high scorers with 9 and 6 points respectively. The next league game is Tuesday October 10 in Seaforth when the South Huron teams hope to repeat an earlier victory over that town.
