FOR ALL Q000 SPORTS
By Ross Haugh.
A real battle
About the only thing certain about the current
red-hot battle in the American league Eastern division is
that it will go down to the final games of the schedule,
early in October*
With four teams separated by only three games
and only 10 days remaining in the regular schedule, the
possibilities become almost too numerous to mention.
The fact the four contenders have an unequal
number of games remaining because of the players strike
in early April makes the race very difficult to figure out.
Our favorite Detroit Tigers are a perfect example
of the tearh with the extra games not necessarily having
an advanta4e—
The Tigers will play the most games of any of the
four contenders, 156, while Boston and New York play
155 times and Baltimore is in action only 154 times.
Detroit has 80 wins and 68 losses compared to
Boston's record of 80-66. The Tigers with two extra
games so far have lost both of them and are one full
game behind the Red Sox.
Boston has nine games left with the Tigers eight
to go. The two teams finish up against each other at
Tiger Stadium on October 2, 3 and 4, This will likely be
the most crucial series of the year and draw full houses
to the Detroit park.
The New York Yankees with seven games left,
find themselves two games behind the Red Sox in the
win column and four behind in the loss column. The
Yanks can help themselves with two games against the
Tigers but their five other games are against Cleveland
and Milwaukee.
The Yankees definitely need help from the other
contenders,
The Baltimore Orioles have lost three more games
than Boston but take on the Red Sox for a three game
series, September 29 and 30 and October 1. Baltimore's
other four games are against Cleveland so they must look
for otherteams such as New York and Milwaukee to
take care of the Tigers.
A column in the Toronto Globe and Mail this
week suggested that this season it's the all-important
win column rather than the losses section which will tell
the tale.
We don't quite agree with that theory. Some
quick ciphering tells us if Detroit wins seven of their
remaining eight games and Boston takes seven out of
nine ;each club would end up with 87 victories but the
Tigers would be in second place on the strength of 69
losses to 68 for Boston.
Some stray geese
Recreation director Alvin Willert reports at least
seven wild geese are missing from the sanctuary at the
Morrison Dam.
Willert believes the birds which are unable to fly
because of clipped wings have moved downstream and
are possibly in the river west of Exeter and in the
Crediton area.
Anyone seeing these birds, some of which have
bands on their legs are asked to call Willert at 235-2833.
A new hockey league
The Lucan-Ilderfon Jets are taking on a big order
this year in moving a notch higher in hockey company.
The Jets have entered a new OHA Senior "B" league
and will be competing against teams from London,
Woodstock, Preston, Stratford, Bothwell and Durham.
A very ambitious 36 game schedule has been lined
up for "the seven clubs with triple home and home
games.
The first practice for the Lucan-Ilderton club
which will play all home games at the new llderton
arena will be Friday night, October 6 at eight o'clock.
Any players of Senior "B" calibre anywhere in
the area are asked to get in touch with manager Don
Urbshott of the Jets before the first practice.

Despite the victory, senior
coach Ron Bogart commented
after the game, "all we•need now
is some offence," The seniors
were able to gain only nine yards
on passing plays and were held to
96 yards along the ground,'
Their 105 yard total offence was
matched by the same number of
yards picked up in penalties to the
opposition.
The only scoring in the first
quarter was a single booted by
Panther kicker Paul Robinson.
This scoring play was repeated
early in the second period to give
the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Before the first half had
elapsed, quarterback Perry
Stover lunged over the Stratford
line from one yard out and
Robinson was good with the
convert.
The only other scoring in the
game came in the fourth quarter
when Stover hit paydirt from 15
yards out on a keeper play,
Dave Cyr led the meagre
Panther ground attack with 37
yards in ten carries while Randy
Regier picked up 25 yards in
seven attempts.
Quick start
In the junior game, the Pan-
thers wasted little time in getting
on the scoreboard. A 58 yard
march on ten plays early in the
game was culminated when Paul
Truemner raced over the goal
line from three yards out.
A second quarter offensive
thrust by the Panthers was
completed whenwingback Randy
Dietrich scored the second South
Huron touchdown on good
execution of a reverse play.
Gary Jennison blocked a
Stratford kick to pave the way for
the third South Huron major
score late in the first half. Larry
Johns Scooped up the loose ball
and moved to the Stratford nine
yard line before being stopped.
On the second play, Bill Wilson
swept around the end to score.
Northwestern scored their only
touchdown late in the fourth
quarter,
