The final Walsingham spurt in the ninth was quickly snuffed out. Abbott led off with a single but pinch hitter Hansen lined to Bill Sehade at second and Abbott was easily doubled off first. The next batter Loncke, also got good wood on the ball with a solid line drive right back to Ratz. The Tiger left bander knocked the ball down and recovered in time to make the play at first and the game was over. John Hayter was a big cog in the Dashwood win coming up with three or four great fielding plays and also stole two bases with daring head-long slides. Many Thanks The Dashwood Tigers, manager and coaches wish to express their sincere thanks to all the loyal fans for their tremendous support and assistance during the 1972 season. SPORTS 404Alk By Ross Haugh Too many games • Rabid sports fans in this area had their problems Sunday afternoon in keeping track of all the activities going on. This reporter was certainly in that position. At about four o'clock in the afternoon we were in the dugout of the Dashwood Tigers as they were preparing to start play in the third and final game for the Ontario Baseball Association Intermediate "D" championship. With us was a portable radio in an attempt to keep up to date on the Canada-Sweden hockey game, also in progress. The baseball game was just getting underway when Phil Esposito scored with less than a minute to go to give Team Canada a 4-4 tie. Then it was a quick switch of the dial to find the Detroit Tigers leading the Milwaukee Brewers 6-2. If this wouldn't have been enough, at the same time the London Lords were playing at J. W. Little Stadium in London and the London Dukes were engaged in a doubleheader at Labatt Park. The regular Sunday harness races were on at Clinton and sky divers were busy at Sexsmith airport. This certainly made for a complete and varied afternoon of sports which should have satisfied the most rabid. We started out to talk about the Dashwood Tigers. About seven o'clock Sunday night, the Tigers stretched a record which is beginning to get almost unbelievable. Glenn Webb's Tigers won their fourth Ontario championship in five years. They defeated the. Walsingham Senators in the third and deciding game by a score of 7-0. The manner in which the Tigers disposed of Walsingham in the final game was the way champions are expected to play. Exery player on the roster turned in an excellent performance. For three of the Tigers, it was the second Ontario championship in a little less than five months. Playing key roles in the Tiger win Sunday were John Hayter, Jim Guenther and Brian Bestard. All three were members of the Exeter Hawks, winners of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" championship last spring. At the plate, Guenther was the most valuable Tiger. The stocky catcher slammed a bases loaded home run in the first inning to give his team and pitcher Dave Ratz in particular a little breathing room. On the defensive side of the ledger for the Tigers, shortstop John Hayter was sensational. He gobbled up ground balls with the agility of a vacuum cleaner and roamed into centre field on at least two occasions to make one-handed running catches. After the game we heard one Walsingham player remark, "I've always said one player doesn't make a team. But, this afternoon your shortstop is the one that killed us all by himself." p, While the younger players stood out, we can't overlook some of the older performers on the team. Bob Hoffman slammed his first home run in quite a few years and Pete Ravelle despite some adversities showed all the enthusiasm of a much younger player. Ravelle, bothered most of the season by a bad knee scored from second base in the third inning when the Walsingham first baseman bobbled a grounder. He went roaring around third ignoring all efforts of coach Webb to bring him to a stop. Our sincerest congratulations go out to Tiger manager Glenn Webb, coach Charlie Tieman and all the players. With the championship win Sunday, a few of our friends on the Tigers can throw away their lucky charms. Aside to scorekeeper George Tiernan: "There must be a shoe sale on somewhere" and to pitcher and captain Dave Ratz, "some rabbit may need an extra foot." Another good game In our opening comments we mentioned the London Dukes fastball club. The Dukes, one of the best teams in Ontario took time out from their busy schedule Friday night to play an exhibition game in Hensall. All proceeds from the game attended by close to 500 fans will go to aid children suffering from cystic fibrosis. The Dukes were full of enthusiasm and 14 players showed up for the game. A Hensall native Bill Shaddick who was mainly responsible for arranging the game was at third base and a former star for Parkhill and Sylvan clubs, Ron Sadler played short. The coach of the London club is also no stranger in this area. He is Russ Evon who refereed many hockey games in the old Cyclone league. Evon, a top softball pitcher in his own right was the top hitter for the London Majors for many years. We can remember back when Bobby Schnurr, manager of the Kitchener Panthers would rather give Evon a base on balls than face his powerful bat. Schnurr was known to give Evon a free ticket as a lead-off batter. The Friday night contest was well played with the Dukes edging the Hensall Sherwoods 3-0. 0: TA Ball Quiz Answers To Last Week's Questions — Lou Gehrig holds the major league baseball record for most consecutive games played with 2,130 between 1925 and 1939. The record for the most bases on balls in a major league career is held by none other than Babe Ruth with 2,056 from 1915 when he started with the Boston Red Sox until 1935 when his career ended with the Boston Braves. Most of the walks came during his long tenure with the New York Yankees. Questions — Two players share the record of getting 12 base hits in succession. Who were they? A member of the Detroit Tigers delivered six singles and a double in a 12-inning game in 19/0, Who was he? The old saying of being "an exception instead of a rule" doesn't apply to the Dashwood Tigers baseball team. The Tigers under the guidance of manager Glenn Webb seem to have a rule of their own and that is to win Ontario Baseball Simpson tops bowling Harold Simpson was the top bowler at the regular Tuesday night jitney held at the Exeter lawn bowling club. Simpson scored two wins, a plus of 13 and aggregate of 26 to take first prize. Next in line was a first year bowler, Beth Batten with a plus of 11 and aggregate of 25 to go with a pair of victories. A third place tie resulted between Wilf Shapton and Gertrude Hamilton. They each scored two wins, a plus of 9 and aggregate of 27. Next in line came Liz Lamport and Clarence Down. Thursday night it was Wilf Shapton copping the top prize with a plus of 15 and aggregate of 27 to go with two wins. Stella Taylor was in the runner- up position with a pair of vic- tories, a plus of 9 and 21 aggregate. Dart schedule starts Friday The first week of play in the regular schedule of the Exeter Legion mixed dart league will be played Friday night. Association Intermediate "D" championships. Sunday afternoon with probably their best performance of the year or several years, they blanked the Walsingham Senators 7-0 to win the provincial championship for the fourth time in five years. ' The only year in the past five when the Dashwood boys failed to go all the way was in 1970 when they suffered a "nightmare" in the ninth inning of one game and lost to Wilkesport in the semi- final round, OBA convener Jim Inglis of Guelph was on hand to present the Ontario trophy to the Tiger captain Dave Ratz. The championship win was accomplished on a solid team effort combining strong pitching, excellent fielding and timely hitting. The most timely hitting came in the bottom of the first inning and it was none other than Jim Guenther delivering the big blow. It was the stocky catcher's third home run in as many games at the Dashwood park. After Walsingham went down one-two-three in the fop of the first, the Tigers went to work. With one out John Hayter singled to right field and promptly stole second with a successful long slide on its stomach. The next two batters Bill Schade and Pete Ravelle drew MORE SILVERWARE — Trophies are becoming "old hat for the Dashwood Tigers baseball club. Above, captain Dave Ratz accepts the OBA Intermediate "D" award from Jim Inglis of Guelph. It's the Tigers fourth championship in five years. There was no doubt about the drive when it left the bat. All runners forgot about tagging up and headed for home as the ball left the diamond. The Tigers added two runs to their total in the third on only one hit. Bill Schade leading off was safe on an error. With one strike on Pete Ravelle Schade broke for second on an attempted steal. The Walsingham second sacker broke to cover the base and Ravelle sent a slow roller through the spot he vacated into right field for a base hit. Bud Desjardine drew a base on balls to load the bases. Gary Hartman's ground ball was booted by the Walsingham first baseman and Schade and Ravelle were able to score. The final Tiger tally came with Bob Hoffman's first home run of the year over the right field fence. The only other Dashwood hit off the slants of Quick and Hlemer was Pete Ravelle's single down the left field line leading off in the seventh, Captain Dave Ratz went the full.distance on the mound for the ,Tigers. He gave up seven hits but kept them well scattered. In only two innings were Walsingham able to get two
