Hopefully, there will be a few
more weeks of warm, sunny
weather, but for all intents and
purposes, the summer tourist
season is over at Grand Bend,
and from the business angle, it
seems to have been a summer
unlike any other.
All the merchants spoken to
agreed that the number of
tourists and the type, and age of
tourists has changed.
"There certainly haven't been
as many people around the Bend
this year as last year," said Mrs.
Shirley Smith, of Shirley's
Canadian Crafts. "Last year,
there were always people
around."
"There aren't as many young
people," said Ted Flint, owner of
the Drugstore, "and that suits me
just fine,"
This seems to be the biggest
change at the Bend, The usual
influx of young people has been
replaced by a growing number of
families, but the effect on
business seems to have varied,
Business is "better than usual"
for Orval Wassman at the Village
Inn. The 24th of May weekend, we
were "infested" with young
people, said. Mr. Wassman.
"Now, I have a much nicer
clientele, a lot more families.
There are just not as many
hippies, long-hairs, and people
without places to sleep," he said.
He said he realized that some
places were hurting because of
the lack of the hippy business, but
not his.
Leo Masse at The Tender Spot
Meat Market agreed. He said his
business was "bigger and better
than ever", but said that there
was not as much walking trade.

new, closed drain on sideroad 15-
16 of the township at a cost of
$1,036.10.
In addition council received
and approved three tile drain
applications for a total of $7,300.

ENGAGEMENTS --
Mr. And Mrs. Alvin Willert,
Exeter, are pleased to announce
the ,forthcoming marriage of
their daughter Sheila Marie to
Mr. Mervyn Henry Frederick
Knechtel, son of mrt. Henry
Knechtel, Rostock, and the late
Mr. Knechtel, The marriage will
take place on. Friday, October -6,
1972 at 4:00 p.m. in Exeter United
Church, Exeter, Ontario,
major reason for the small
number of young people. "The
kids like to be all together," said
Leo Masse. Shirley Smith said
there just isn't enough actid at
Grand Bend to attract the young
people.
She sited other possible reasons
for the situation. She suggested
that many people have taken
advantage of the cheap-rate
charter flights to Europe,
especially to Spain. She added
that the combined factors of the
American election and the
relatively low value of the
American dollar have resulted in
the fact that they just aren't
buying.
But whatever the reason, all
the merchants are agreed that it
is not hurting Grand Bend
any more than any other similar
resort town.
"The people with money are
here, though," he said.
Shirley Smith doesn't agree.
"We plan in August for our best
business," she said. "But here we
are just before the last big
weekend and there just aren't
any people."
The weather was blamed at the
biggest reason for fewer general
numbers at the resort. "R rained
nearly every weekend," said Jim
Sharrow from Sharrow's Sunoco
Service.
Mr. Wassman said he believed
that inland town business was up.
"The weather hasn't been hot
enough to drive people to the
lake. They are either staying at
home or camping for a weekend,
but doing their shopping before
they leave," he said,
The closing of the Pinery to

KE'n$ — In loving memory of .a
dear husband and father
Elmore A. Keyes who went to
be with the Lord September 7,
1967.
How could we know you would not
see another spring with as.
See purple pansies bloom, or hear
the robins sing,
The soft brown earth upturned,
the blades of greenest grass,
The budding maple trees, in lanes
where once we loved to pass.
How could we know God planned
your rest so soon
That you would leave this earth
the sun the stars and moon
The things of life you loved, the
earth you trod
These things you left, but now
you are at home with God.
