The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1972-08-24, Page 20Pig* 29 Tirrtos-Advocate, August 4, 1V2 The wild blue yonder calls for 38 years, 15,000 hours Sam Burgess has been high for oa years, and in that time, has accumulated 15,000 hours of flying time. It sounds like a lot, but for approximately two-thirds of his life, the retired USAF Colonel has done little else but fly: first as a commercial pilot teaching stunt aerobatics,; then in the Air Force for 26 years; and since his retirement four years ago, performing precision aerobatics in his own little yellow and white Pitts Special. Now, Mr. Burgess is preparing to participate in his eighth competition this year, The Canadian Aerobatic Cham- pionship, to be held in Huron ‘Alren? 1.WES". eee eit••• et26",. 4,‘? gifAEibifte 1 Esar Park, Saturday. Although official practice for the event doesn't begin until Friday, Sam has been up in his plane almost every day since he landed in litwon Park, August 11. "If you don't fly every day, you're out of practice," he satcl. Normally he practices every other day, but before com- petition, he tries to get in some time every day. And such diligence seems to be paying off. He has placed second in six competitions this year, and first in the other two. "Those young kids are hard to beat, though," said the 55 year old pilot from Honolulu, Hawaii. For each competition, he must perform two routines, one compulsory, called the "known group" and one set of manoeuvers of his own choosing, All must be executed within a 3,300 by 2,600 foot area, and with only three seconds between manoeuvers. The pilot is allowed six minutes to complete his program, but it usually only takes about two and a half. "Because of the safety factor, though, we have to stay between 1,500 feet and 3,500 feet. If you go lower than 1,500 forget it, You get an automatic zero," he ex- plained. The program is judged by five judges. To avoid any chance of prejudice or bias, however, the highest and lowest marks are discarded, and an average taken of the three remaining. "Prejudice isn't quite the right word,"said Mr. Burgess. "But if one of the judges happens to fly a Pitts Special himself, he knows just what the plane can do, and then tends to mark harder. This way, we avoid any trouble." His dashing little plane, weighing only 725 pounds, and with a wingspan of just 17 feet, is rated as the best aircraft in the world for acrobatic competition. His was built in Miami four years ago, and is valued at between $10,000 and $15,000. "There is no money in a sport like this," he said. "And it is an expensive hobby." The "hammerhead" is just one of the manoeuvers Sam Burgess does as part of his hobby, and it is also his least favorite, For this, he goes straight up, as far as he can go, does a pirouette right at the top of the ascent, and then it is straight down.
