Calvin Christian board secretary Cecil Bruinsma and Principal Ralph Schuurman appeared before Huron's, board Monday evening in Clinton to ask for free bussing for 23 of their pupils this fall. A recommendation before the board from 3. L. Cunningham, transportation manager, suggested a "transportation agreement with the Clinton and District Christian School board for a trial period of September to December 19724!....And that the Christian School board re- imburse the Huron Board their proportionate costs on the bus routes involved. Before much discussion was held on the recommendation, Bruinsma informed the board the Christian School board was requesting transportation free of charge. "We're asking for some value for our taxes," said Bruinsma, reminding the board that Christian School supporters paid taxes to the public school board although their children attended the Christian School. "The value is there if you send your children to our schools," stated Mollie Kunder, Seaforth. "We cannot do that, on a matter of principle," answered Bruinsma. The Christian School board was asking that a maximum of three students be added to some bus routes throughout the county, Bruinsma said these students are scattered throughout the district and about 60 miles of bussing per day could be eliminated if Huron School board buses would pick up these children, all residing on reads travelled by Huron's buses. "Some buses are already stopping at these gates to pick up children attending other schools," said Bruinsma. He said that according to last year's bus routes, there would be plenty of room for extra students. Principal Schuurman said that he didn't like to think of their request as being for "free transportation" but rather for permission to use "empty seats" on Huron County School Board buses. 3e referred to former Minister of Education Thomas Wells who suggested that Christian School boards go to their public school boards and see if arrangements could be made to "share facilities". Huron Board chairman H. M. Elliott said that in his view, Wells had abdicated his responsibility by leaving it up to "100 different boards to deal with the problem in 100 different ways". "We're in the red now and we're asking for help," said Bruinsma, George Parsons of Goderich asked if the Christian School board had considered the dif- ference to their budget if they paid their proportionate costs to the Huron board, "No we haven't" admitted Bruinsma, "but I don't think it would be too beneficial," Parsons told the delegation it should investigate the savings through this arrangement before abandoning the idea entirely. John Broadfoot who was conducting the meeting at the request of Chairman Bob Elliott, told the delegation the matter would be discussed thoroughly and the decision made known to them, Transportation contracts for carriers of trainable retarded students were fixed until June, 1973. George Cameron and Gordon Montgomery who transport children to Golden Circle School in Wingham will receive an in- crease of three percent over .2575 per mile; Bluewater Taxi carrying students to Queen Elizabeth School at the rate of 22.66 cents per mile per day; Earl's Taxi transporting students to Huron Hope at Centralia at the rate of 22.66 cents per mile per day; and Huron Automotive which takes children to Queen Elizabeth School at a cost of 20.60 cents per mile per day. Two South Huron District High School employees have 'resigned from the board's employ. They are Mrs. Valerie Callingham, secretary, and Ed. Chambers, custodian. John Consitt has in- formed the board that he does not wish to renew his contract as custodian for Hensall Public School. The home was purchased by the Van Egmond Foundation last spring from Mrs. Florence Smith of Seaforth. Both the $500 option to buy and $14,000 purchase price were raised through bank loans. A fund-raising campaign will likely be launched early in September at a "handing over" ceremony of the provincial grant. He was more widely known as the military commander for William Lyon MacKenzie during the abortive 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion. The colonel arrived at Mon- tgomery's Tavern, just after the rebel's were routed by the British, and just in time to be arrested. He was tried for treason and died from pneumonia in the York jail Dec, 30, 1837. The Van Egmond Foundation hopes to raise about $5,000 from the public by mailing out 2,500 brochures describing the house and restoration plans. The Ontario Heritage Foun- dation's estimated costs of restoration are in the $15,000 range. The local foundation also hopes to raise about $500 from a costume ball and dinner this fall organized by the Seaforth Chamber of Commerce. Huron County council — which turned down a request for funds last spring — and Seaforth council will also be approached for grants. There is also a possibility a winter works grant may be ob- tained for restoration work.
