It recommended getting ad- ditional experimental in- formation on it and that is the reason for the suspension from January 1, The government hopes stocks of DES treated feed can be used up before the end of the year, Agriculture Minister H.A. "Bud" Olson said the drug is being suspended because of export considerations as well as safety factors. Olson continued, "Food safety officials have not found any evidence of damage to anyone's g55,, •rk ,•‘ See them at our OPEN HOUSE Saturday, Aug. 19 10:00 a,m, to 5:00 p.m, , The controversial drug DES, widely used to promote growth in cattle was suspended Monday by the federal government. The health and agriculture departments said DES would be suspended effectiveJanuaryl, The United States recently banned use of the drug because it had caused cancer in rats, Canada did not immediately follow suit. Growers had ex- pressed fear a ban would raise meat costs, The Canadian action came after a non-governmental group made the rather confusing conclusion that there is no danger health but there are some im- portant reasons in conjunction with our international trading partners in meat products why we have to stay in line with the U.S. decision," "Those countries who have suspended or banned the use of DES in their own beef production prohibit the importation of meat from countries where use of the chemicals is allowed", he said. He said, "that situation is unfortunate in a way but Canadian cattle producers will be able to compete, provided our neighbours are not allowed to use growth stimulants denied to our producers." Locally, Clarence Hardy, president of the Middlesex Beef Producers said, "This govern- ment reaction comes from a public outcry and now it's back to slow growth again, Behaviour of the weatherfnan in the next couple of weeks will decide whether most farm crops are successful or well below normal this year. Huron's Associate Ag Rep Mike Miller said this week a lot of good warm weather is needed to bring New tractor on preview "They're just amazing," stated Jack VanBussel this week after his return from Waterloo, Iowa, where he was given a preview of the new line of John Deere tractors to be unveiled this weekend. The Huron Tractor (Exeter) Ltd. head was accompanied on the three-day jaunt by two other members of the firm, Herb Cunningham and Harry Winters. VanBussel said the four new tractors to be unveiled at open houses at dealers this Saturday are completely new and feature space-age technology. The three were most impressed with the sound' guard body ;;vhibh produces a lower sound level from a tractor at full RPM than does a car at 70 m.p.h. It is air-conditioned, has a stereo deck with dual speakers and can be kept completely free from dust. crops along successfully. The barley and corn crops seem to have been hit the hardest by the wet and cool weather, Miller said the barley crop is one of the poorest in years with some weighing in at 35-39 pounds per bushel. Minimum weight for commercial purposes is 48 pounds per bushel, The excessively hot weather of a couple of weeks ago caused the barley to ripen too fast and the kernels never filled out properly, said Miller. "As well the fast growing conditions caused the crop to grow too much straw and much of it fell over." Harvesting of all grains is reported about ten days behind normal schedule. Miller reported most corn was coming along quite well despite the killer frost of June 10. A lot of corn fields including the ones replanted the week of June 15 are very uneven and will need good late fall weather to mature properly. The white bean crops are also a little spotty but are listed by Miller to be "fair to'good." At the Canadian Canners plant in Exeter, manager Jack Urquhart reports a similar harvesting situation with both pea and corn packs running a little late. The pea crop will continue for another two weeks because of slow ripening process Increase in milk quotas The Ontario Milk Marketing Board is advising all milk producers that there will be a general increase in their Market- Sharing quotas effective Sep- tember 1, 1972. This increase is in accordance with the views of the Canadian Dairy Commission and the dairy industry representatives from various provinces on the milk supply management committee, that there is a need for a greater production of milk for manufacturing into dairy products in the current dairy year. Market-Sharing quotas are a means of aligning the amount of milk produced with market demand. Repeated defoliation by insects or anything else will result in narrow ring width in trees. Added Urquhart, "If we get a lot of hot weather that date could be moved up to August 28." The local manager also said the corn crop is a bit uneven, but, "the yield looks to be there," HARVESTING EQUIPMENT IHC 403 Combine with cab and two heads No. 80 Owatonna 12-Foot Swather IHC No. 80 Combine Oliver No. 18 Combine Massey No. 60 with Bean Equipment IHC 815 Combine with two heads John Deere No. 42 Combine with bean equipment Case 600 Combine with cab and two heads In addition to the canning of peas a mixture of peas and carrots are also being processed at the local plant. The carrots are being trucked in from the Erieau Marsh and Jeanette's Creek. The local factory has been running single shifts most of the time due mainly to the fact the pea harvest has been well stretched out.
