"There isn't ,one subject you can name that I don't have a picture of on my cigar hands," she said. 'Arid after looking at the many books' she has filled with them, it is im- possible not to believe her, Each cigar band.has a different picture in the centre, many with identifying names and ex- planations, and including everything from all the different kinds of birds in the world, ,to national flags, and American space flights. Mrs. Van Wieren got started on this unusual hobby in Holland, With recent trends toward women's liberation, many women have started to take over what were once strictly male jobs. But the reverse is also true, P.W. John Duncan is the only male nursing student living in the nine-storey nurses' residence at the Credit Valley School of Nursing in Mississauga, and he is enjoying every minute of it. Although surrounded by 225 attractive girls from all over Ontario, John has the entire men's floor of the residence to himself. To top things off, it was his fiance, Judy Moorehouse, Lon- don, who encouraged John to CORRECTION In the June 15 write-up of the Hoffman-Davis wedding, the name of one of the soloists, Mrs. Annemarie Hoffman, was omitted. Sorry! when she was only five years old. She was born in the town of Boskoop, and everyone used to collect them there. Holland has .a thriving tobacco industry, and the thousands of different cigar bands, they make, are one of the major marks of that industry. "I remember when I was small," she said, "it was traditional that after church all the men used to congregate outside, light their cigars, and stand around and talk. We kids used to run like crazy to get outside to get the bands off their cigars, or to pick them off the ground before someone else got there. It was hard for me, though because my father was a little deaf, so we used to have to sit right at the front of the church." By all appearances, though, she must have been a very fast enrol in the course. John is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Duncan, London. Mrs. Duncan is the former Mildred Lamport, Shipka, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lamport, also of Shipka. Institute holds dinner meeting Ladies from Crediton, Hensall, Clinton and Exeter district met Friday morning in Trivitt Parish Hall for the final meeting of the season of Christian Women's Club. Mrs. Roger Vernier, Hensall, presented the devotional on appreciation of nature. She said we need times of quiet to refresh ourselves in the wonders of God's creations. The Bible study was conducted under the guidance of Mrs. Doug Warren, and singing was led by Mrs. Eric Luther. Plans wer made for the July service to be held at Huronview the second Sunday in the month. Christian Women's Club will • reconvene in September when Philip Gandon, former minister of Trivitt Memorial Church, and now executive director of London Goodwill Industries, will be the special speaker. Mr. & Mrs. Edgar Squire were guests at a turkey dinner held in the Royal Edward Hotel, St. Marys, June 14 to help celebrate the 25th anniversary of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Squire, Whalen. In at- tendance were their sons, Dottglas and Bill and other relatives from Stratford, London and St. Marys, who were en- tertained later at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Mitchell, and Mr. B. Peter and Sandra Richardson, son-in-law and daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Larry Snider, left last week for Perth, Australia. Mr. Richardson will continue his studies in neurosurgery at the Royal Perth Hospital. They will spend two Weeks in Hong Kong, Bangkok and HAIL hick Raveling has returned to Fort Vrancle after visiting with his mother, Mrs. Edith Haigh, for a few tlays ginner. When the Van Wierens moved to Canada, about 14 years ago, it became much more difficult for Mrs. Van Wieren to get the bands. Just about everyone she knows saves them for her, though. Once she saw a boy from Montreal on television who also collects the bands. She got in touch with him through the television station, and they write back and forth all the time. He has even been down to visit a couple of times, and is coming again this summer. Mrs. Van Wieren also corresponds with a gentleman in Holland who has a collection of over 55,000 cigar bands. Most of them have serial numbers on the back, so it is possible to keep track, systematically, of the bands they don't have. It is also possible, then, for one to keep track of what the other needs, "He knows just exactly what bands I have, arid what ones I want." The bands are produced in series of themes, much like baseball cards. Each series may also be Made in different sizes and colors, It is therefore possible to have three or more bands which are quite similar, but which are, in fact, different. For example, Mrs. Van Wieren has a whole series of bands which tell the story of "Little Red- Riding-Hood," in colorful pic- tures. She also has a series of bands with every president of the United States on them, right from George Washington to President Nixon. One of Mrs. Van Wieran's favorite small collections, within her large collection, is the whole life story of President Eisenhower, including a picture a him as a baby, growing up, his engagement and wedding pic- ture, relaxing, working, and during the war, "You can see the whole of history in miniature pictures right here," said Mrs. Van Wieren. Other favorites of Mrs, Van Wieren include a series of famous paintings, such as the "Mona Lisa" and a number of reproductions of paintings by Rembrandt, who was born in a windmill just a few miles from where Mrs. Van Wieren lived in Boskoop. The oldest band Mrs, Van Wieren has, was made in 1896, when Queen Wilhelmina was crowned. Others range from pictures of the explosion at Hiroshima to one of Shirley Temple, Many of the businesses in Holland put out their own cigar bands, advertisements of everything from men's clothing stores to restaurants. Although many of the bands come from Holland, she has them from all over the world. Quite a few are made in the United States, but there are hardly any made in Canada. Apparently, there was quite a famous collection of Canadian cigar bands before the first World War. "Now, they don't bother with it," said Mrs. Van Wieren. But you can always tell if they are Canadian, because they are the only ones I have ever seen with "Pull" or "Open Here" on them, said Mrs. Van Wieren, Mrs. Van Wieren has been on CFPL television twice, showing her collection of cigar bands. But this is far from her only hobby. She sews all her own clothes, knits, crochets, gardens, and creates pictures in petit point, She has also passed her habit of collecting en to her family. Her °Idea( danghter, Joanne, 16, has -over 1,000 postage stamps, plus collection Of postage cards from all over the world, Clarence, 14, also collects cigar bands, and has a match-box Collection of his own, "You'd get crazy from saving things around here," said MrS, Yen Wieren, but it is fairly on, vious that she doesn't mind too much, TimepAckvocate, June 1972 Rtrlos 11 ar bands but no cigars rot 0 Several volunteers from the Clinton Christian Reform Church were on hand on Thursday af- ternoon to assist with activities on second floor. A choir of young people from Wesley Willis Sunday School of Clinton attended last Sunday morning's Chapel Service and along with their leader, Mrs. Norman Holland, provided musical numbers, The South Huron Christian Womens Club song service held on the second Sunday evening of each month was enjoyed by everyone last week.
