To hove many bus trips.
Pianning for day centres.
Plans for the specialized day-
care centre at Exeter and Huron
Park are well under way. The
project members headed by Don
Jolly, Jr., under an Opportunities
For Youth grant, are busy
Working out ideas and finalizing
plans for the summer program,
which will officially begin July 3,
There will be 12 young people
working on the project, four post-
secondary and eight high-school
students. Final selection of the
secondary school students will be
Made this week, All the ap-
plicants are from S,H.D.H.S.
The other four, however, have
been visiting local industries to
get scrap materials for the arts
and crafts they have planned.
"Everyone has been very willing
to help," said Don.
They have also been
distributing survey question-
naires to the local public schools
to determine where interests lie.
"We have had no feedback on the
survey yet, but we should have by
the end of the week, and we also
hope to get to the schools to talk
directly to the kids," he said,
The project members want to
get the first two weeks' program
completely finalized, If the initial
program works out successfully,
then the group will continue along
similar lines for the remainder of
the summer. "We want to make
the program flexible, and varied,
so kids who attend for the whole
summer won't get bored, and so
children who go on the bus trips,
in order to help cover the costs of
transportation.
The four people in charge of the
project are all Natural Science
students at the University of
Western Ontario, and have had
very little experience in the field
of recreation. However, they
hope to attend some of the O.F.Y.
workshops being held in London,
just to get some tips on the setting
up of their program, and in its
administration, They are also
trying to make it possible to take
a St. John's First Aid Course.
"We are getting a little
worried, though, because we
haven't received any money
yet," said Don, "We are ex-
pecting it any day. If we haven't
heard anything by the end of the
week, we will just have to inquire
into the situation,"
The group was concerned at
first because , of their lack of
facilities. They have now,
however, acquired use of the
gym, hallway and playground of
the Exeter Public School, and two
classrooms, gym and grounds of
J.A.D. McCurdy School. "The
only problem is that we have to
vacate both these schools as of
August 18," said Don. "We don't
know what we will be doing after
that, but we will have to find
other accommodations, or hope
that it never rains."
The project hopes to involve
about 120 children.
THERE'S A LOT OF WORK AHEAD for the three young people pictured above. Mary Ellen. Gingerich,
Zurich, Kathryn Hall and Don Jolly Jr., of Exeter have received approval from Opportunities for Youth ,
to conduct specialized day care centres in Exeter and Huron Park this summer. Eight other young people
will be employed to assist them in this venture. Their grant amounts to $9,950. T-A photo
it will be possible for a child who
wants to go away for a vacation
with his family, to come back,
and still fit into the program."
All children will be required to
register, so that programs may
be designed with some degree of
certainty. They may register for
different time periods, from two
weeks up,
An important part of the
program, in addition to the
planned recreation, the dramatic
arts and films, and the arts and
crafts, are the planned ex-
cursions to local places of in-
terest.
"I think just about everybody
likes a bus-trip," said Don, "and
we hope to have several during
the course of the summer." His
group is also going to try to set up
an exchange program between
Exeter and Huron Park. Many of
the Huron Park children have not
had a great deal to do with farms,
and many of the Exeter children
have had very little to do with
industry, so it will be of double
benefit to all,
The O.F.Y. project is operating
on a $9,950 budget of which only
$950 is for operating costs.
"That's not very much, con-
sidering the amount of tran-
sportation costs we could run
into," Don said. "But we are still
shopping around, trying to get the
most economical deal," He added
that it may be necessary to
charge a nominal fee to the
