FOR ALL, 0901) SPORTS , By Ross Haugh Expos lose but scores two more/ much closer Interesting show The next two weekends will be busy ones for enthusiasts of a couple of sports in addition to the busy baseball schedules involving numerous area teams. This coming Saturday, the Exeter Kinsmen club presents the seventh annual Mid-Western Quarter Horse show and the following Saturday, the Ausable golf course will be the site of the Mentally Retarded golf tournament. Saturday's qiiarter horse show has again attracted entries from all parts of Ontario and many points in the United States according to Secretary Noel Veri. The Kinsmen club has been successful in obtaining an open air exhibitor's lounge licence from the Liquor Control Board of Ontario. This is apparently the first of its kind issued in the province. Kinsmen president elect Bill Dinney said this Week that government officials would be doing a survey on the activities of the lounge. In addition to the LCBO approval has been received from the Department of Health. Exeter town council and the police department. All profits of the horse show go to the Kinsmen and will be used for their national project of assisting the Cystic Fibrosis program and the local service project of last winter which provided an ice scraping and flooding machine for the Exeter arena. The morning portion of the quarter horse show is devoted mainly to showing horses at halter while the afternoon performance will provide more entertainment for spectators. A large number of the events are for the younger entrants. The judge this year is Roy Fulton Jr. of Tennessee. The balance of officials will be the old stand-bys including arena director Don Nye of Hamilton and announcer Fred Darling of Exeter. This year all the ringmen will be dressed in clown suits which should add some humour to the day's activities. third . and scored on a single from the halo( Gary Kyle. The Exeter club went ahead in the fourth with a pair of runs. Bill Bourne followed with a single and Bourne scored as Terry Bourne and Jim Russell each drew walk, Fairbairn came in to _omit on Bill Farquhar's one base blow to complete the Expo scoring for the afternoon. Jim Pfaff went the full distance on the mound for Exeter and chalked up eight strike-outs while giving up 11 hits. score as the ball was not returned directly to the infield. After Clinton took a one run lead in the first inning the Expos came back to tie the score in the second. With one out, Bill Farquhar walked, stole second and came home as Jim Pfaff's drive was muffled in right field. Bartliff put Clinton ahead again in the third frame by scoring a single run. In the bottom of the fourth, Scott Burton singled for the Expos, moved to second on a grotinci-out, stale SHARPSHOOTERS WIN TITLE — The Sharpshooters won the grand championship of the Exeter Legion mixed dart league recently. T-A photo After dropping their first game of the season in Huron-Perth intermediate baseball action by a large score, the Exeter Expos bounced back this week with two creditable performances. Although still on the losing end, the Expos were in contention in both games right down to the final inning. Saturday night, a three run homer in the sixth inning allowed Walkerton to chalk up a 7 - 3 decision over the Expos. Sunday afternoon with a good crowd looking on, they blew an early lead and were edged 5 - 4 by the Clinton Colts. Double action for the Expos this week will be Friday night at 6.30 at Exeter Community Park when Thorndale will supply the opposition and Sunday night at 6 p.m. against the Mitchell BP's. The same night, the pashwood Tigers are at home to Wingham for an 8.30 contest and Sunday afternoon they travel to Arva. Game time is 2 p.m. Dashwood's only scheduled game of the week in Mitchell Sunday night was rained out. Lead far Six Sunday afternoon against Clinton, the Expos were out in front 4 -3 after six innings of play. The Colts scored twice in the seventh, the winning run coming on a couple of miscues by the Expos. Miller opened the Clinton seventh with a long triple to right Centre field and scored easily on a long drive to left field by Bartliff as Expo outfielder Jack Glover made a beautiful catch going away from the diamond. With two out Cam Colquhoun walked and as he tried to steal second on the first pitch to the next batter, Exeter catcher Bill Bourne threw the ball into the outfield and Colquhoun was able to come all the way around to Men golf at Ausable Don Gifford was the low gross winner in the weekly men's golfing night, Tuesday at the Ausable golf .course. Gifford scored an 80 while Gerry Smith was next in line with a 90, Bob Callingham took the low net prize with a score of '75 with Randy Tiernan placing second at 76. Pete Mason was judged the most honest golfer. THE NOISIEST BUNCH — The Noisy Ones lived up to their name in the recentYy completed Exeter Legion mixed dart league. They were runners-up to the grand champions. From the left, they are, Doug and Lois Brintnell and Marg and Bob Wragg. T-A photo Crediton midgets break even The lone Exeter run was produced in the top of the fourth when Perry Stover singled and came home on a similar hit from the bat of John Vriese. Kevin Bestard, the winning pitcher recorded a total of 10 strike-outs while Perry Stover struck out three and his suc- cessor John Wuerth fanned two, Larry Clarke reached first on an error in the third and crossed the plate on three consecutive walks. Ron Funston singled and scored in the fifth, Keith Davies and Kevin Bestard tallied in the fifth and Ron Funston came home on Bill Hodge's single in the sixth to complete the Crediton scoring, Exeter pee wees on scoring spree The Exeter pee wees are off to a flying start in Western Ontario Athletic Association league play. The local pee wees trounced Clinton 38-4 Thursday night for their third straight win. They had downed Dashwood 19-12 and Seaforth 18-7 in games the previous week. The Exeter lopsided win over Clinton was aided by three home runs. Hitting the round trippers were Paul Pooley, Randy Par- sons and David Holtzmann, the latter's was a grand slammer. The pitching chores for the Exeter youngsters in the three games to date have been shared by Paul Pooley and Dan Bell. • • Your eyes-your first line of SelfiDefence. A good start Despite losing the first three games of the regular schedule the Exeter Expos should provide plenty of enjoyable baseball entertainment before many more weeks expire. The Expos turned in creditable performances in both weekend games and certainly didn't look out of place in intermediate company. In Sunday's game they led Clinton 4-3 until the top of the seventh inning when the Colts tied it up and scored the winner on some loose playing by the Exeterites. The acquisition of Larry Gibson from Crediton to the pitching staff will help considerably. The young left hander looked good in going the full nine innings against Walkerton while chalking up nine strikeouts. Fan support was good at Sunday's game and should improve as the club does the same thing. The Expos will be in action twice this week, both games going on their home diamond. Thorndale will be here Friday night at 6:30 with the Mitchell BP's supplying the opposition Sunday evening at 6 p.m. Let's have a good turn-out for these two games to show the Expos revival of good intermediate baseball can be accomplished. Need umpiring help There doesn't seem to be any scarcity of baseball and softball activity in the area but there sure is a shortage of umpires. With four minor ball teams in action in the WOAA in addition to the intermediate Expos, a large number of umpires are really required and to the best of our knowledge there are only two or three accredited umps in the area. Ardell McIntyre, a constable with the Exeter police force and an experienced umpire would like to hear from anyone interested in taking up calling balls and strikes. McIntyre can be reached at 235-1971 any night after six o'clock. For those interested umpiring clinics are being held Sunday, June 11 in Chesley and Sunday, June 25 in Listowel. Both are afternoon affairs getting underway at one o'clock. Good response The entry list for the Mentally Retarded golf tournament slated for the Ausable course on Saturday, June 17 is growing daily according to chairman Bruce Shaw. All proceeds from the full day's activities will go toward the Adult Workshop being planned in this area. Personalities from CFPL and CKNX radio stations will be in attendance and probably take an active part in some way or another. While speaking of retarded folks, we were able to watch some of the activities at Saturday's field day for retarded young people from Region 2 and were thrilled with the competition. We have never seen such enthusiasm and concentration from an athlete in competition. The concentration put forth by two entrants in the senior high jump class was almost unbelievable. the job calls for them, and regular check-ups if your eyesight's below par. Take care of your eyes, and they'll see you safely through the working day. The best protective equipment you can ever own is already yours—one pair of eyes. Just knowing what's going on around you helps you avoid job accidents. So it makes good sense to look after your eyes, with protective glasses if The sure way to safety is Self-Defence. WEEKEND BASEBALL The Crediton midgets broke even in a pair of Western Ontario Athletic Association midget games during the week. Thursday night on their home diamond, the Crediton youngsters downed Exeter by a score of7 -1 while Monday night, also at home they lost 7 - 5 to Zurich. Six big runs in the third inning allowed Zurich to go out in front and they were never headed. The Zurich rally was powered by Paul Treumner's double and singles from the bats of John Mom- mersteeg, Jim Wildfong, Pat Bedard and Glenn Weido. Ron Schilbe counted the other Zurich marker in the fifth. Crediton's first two runs came home in the second as the result of singles by Larry Clarke and Ron Funston. Rodger Finkbeiner doubled with two out in the Crediton second and scored on an infield error. Back-to-back doubles by Rick Bowers and Bob Heywood produced the final two Crediton runs in the fifth. John Mommersteeg on the Zurich mound gave up seven hits while recording an even dozen strike-outs. Losing hurler Rick Bowers fanned 17 Zurich bat- smen. Crediton scored in every inning but the first in downing Exeter 7 - 1. The winners started off with two runs in the second frame as Randy Finkbeiner's double chased Kevin Bestard and Ron Bowers home.
