The brief is the result of a two week survey conducted in the communityby projectdirectors , Jim Fletcher, London, and Laurie Kreptowski, St. Catharines, both second year Fanshawe Recreation Leader- ship students. The report to the council will outline the plans for the recreation and special events throughout the summer and will specify equipment the group will need. This is a slight variation from the norm, in that OFY projects are usually carried out just with the finances of the government grant, Although this project is under the complete jurisdiction of the students involved, it was, however, initiated by the council itself. Because they were inelligible to apply for such a grant, the council approached Fanshawe to see if there was interest in setting up such a program in the community, and Jim, and Laurie responded. The council will provide some of the equipment necessary to fulfill the recreation program, equipment that will then be available next year, and would make a similar program more feasible. The project is designed tq provide recreation of all kinds, for all members of the com- munity, during the summer, For almost two weeks, Jim and Laurie have been conducting a door-to-door survey of the community, concentrating on the senior citizens, and attempting to assess major areas of interest. They have been using a 40 point check-list, and have come up with some very interesting results, Dear Sir: On behalf of the South Huron District Association. for the Mentally Retarded I should like to thank all who have thus far supported our Workshop. A goodly number of people have responded generously. The children have been fan- tastic a verification to the statement - Little Child Shall Lead Them." There are still a few people who say it can't be done, Let us remember when Columbus set sail some said "It can't be done," History is rich with the records of people who did what others said couldn't be done. We believe our workshop can and will be a reality in our community. We invite those who have not already done so to join us in this adventure. By MRS. HEBER DAVIS SAINTSBURY The anniversary service of the opening of the Racey Memorial Hall at St. Patricks, Saintsbury, was held Sunday..Rev. G. Anderson rector of Trivitt Memorial church Exeter was in charge of the service and guest preacher. The church was decorated with many baskets of flowers donated by friends, the vases in the chancel were filled with flowers donated in memory of Rev. Ryott by Mr. & Mrs, Knox Leet of London, grandson of Rev. Ryott who was rector from 1913-1918. Mrs. Tom Kooy was at the organ and accompanied Mr, Harry Hoffman's solo. Larry Lewis, London accompanied Bill according to Jim, "By far, the senior citizens seem most in- terested in the films we have suggested", he said. These in- clude everything from current, popular films, to handyman films, and those for children, Jim estimated that about 50 percent of those polled were interested in this aspect of the proposed program. This does not mean, however, that the group is going to stop there. They have many things in mind such as a playground for the kids, manned by two staff members, a ladies fitness class and afternoon bowling, men's basket-ball and bowling, horse shoe, checker, and card 'tournaments, and possibly such things as golf instruction, a ladies' softball team and arts and crafts, "Besides involving the senior citizens, we are most anxious to provide some activities for the girls, and ladies", said Jim, "because ,there is very little for them to do". The activities will begin June 12, with evening and some af- ternoon programs planned. "Things will be a little slow until the kids get out of school", said Jim, "We hope to initiate programs on a rotating basis, and then if interest falls off in one area, we will substitute other programs. The group is operating on a $5,700 grant, $300 of which is for operating costs, and the rest for salaries. Four other members will join the staff on June 12, but they are not sure who". We are still going over applications, but we have had some very qualified people apply," said Jim. .- "So far, the general response to the program has been very good", said Jim. "I would say the young people, especially, are really glad to see us here". Ars FILL UP 11111 LOVERS ywHERE \A 4r."7747.7
